rboat Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 How often do you guys change spark plugs? I have an older 2 stroke without oil injection so I assume I need to replace plugs more often than newer engines? Quote
Super User tcbass Posted June 20, 2014 Super User Posted June 20, 2014 How often do you guys change spark plugs? Guy at the shop said every 2 years is fine. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted June 20, 2014 Super User Posted June 20, 2014 I change mine every 100 hours. When I had a 2 stroke carbed engine I changed every year. Quote
Amarley Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 I do it as a part of annual maintenance. But I'm a weekend warrior. If you fish several days throughout the week, maybe every 100 hours or so. Quote
Christian M Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 I have a 96 Merc 2 stroke, I change my plugs every year when I bring my boat out of winterization. They only cost a few bucks and it takes 5 minutes to swap them out. Thats just a part of my annual service, you can call the manufacturer and they can tell you exactly when they recommend, but the most common answers you'll get are every year, or every 100 hours. Mr_Scrogg Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 Spark Plugs? What are those? My tin has a Duramax pushing it across the lake!!! Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted June 24, 2014 Super User Posted June 24, 2014 Every year is a good rule of thumb. Quote
BassResource.com Administrator Glenn Posted June 24, 2014 BassResource.com Administrator Posted June 24, 2014 Annually. Been doing it that way for over 3 decades. Quote
Brian Needham Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 every year ? seems like a waste of money to me...... I always been in the "change them when you need to" camp. maybe I been wrong. but every year for most fishermen is WAY overkill, I think most people would be surprised on how little hours they put on thier outboard. Maybe I am wrong???? 1 Quote
Siebert Outdoors Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 I will check mine a couple times a year. I only replace if needed. Quote

Maybe I am wrong???? Was talkn with a buddy the other day about motor break in proceedures and how most call for 10hrs +. 10 hrs is a lot of running an outboard for a bass fisherman, if you run it an hour a day id be surprised. Super User Sam Posted June 24, 2014 Super User Posted June 24, 2014 When I get the Mercury winterized and serviced each year. Quote
Super User J Francho Posted June 24, 2014 Super User Posted June 24, 2014 I change them after I burn off the fogging oil from the winterizing. They are pretty nasty after all that. I clean the old ones, shrink wrap them, and keep them in the boat in case I fry one on the water. Quote
Brian Needham Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 well that makes sense. we don't "winterize" down here, we fish! LOL Quote
