josappy Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 I am looking for information on spinning reel and rods for fresh water fishing. I am very new to fresh water fishing (bass ,pike, walleye etc) i bought a used baitcaster setup used off kijiji in my area but its not very good for lighter tackle. So i need help in finding a decent setup for a reasonable price. Quote
masterbass Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 What's your price range? Pflueger makes some really good spinning reels. The president in the 30 size is a great reel for about $60. The trion is a great value reel at $40. The supreme is nice $100 reel. You can't go wrong with Shimano either. Get a 6'6" to 7' medium power rod. Quote
josappy Posted June 19, 2014 Author Posted June 19, 2014 price range is around 150$ , probably be going to bass pro shop since they offer a military discount. I just dont want to walk in to that store blind because it can get expensive quick. i have done research on different rod and reels but you see the best about them and the absolute worst, so any experience with certain company would be a great help as well. masterbass Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 IMO I wouldn't get an ugly stik. Look at carbonlite, duckett ghost or shimano compre. Every bass pro shop stocks slightly different stuff so see what they have. Ugly stiks are not very good bass rods. Quote
josappy Posted June 19, 2014 Author Posted June 19, 2014 i was thinking that but when i first went to bass pro they seem like they were selling me the flavour of the month. they seemed very stiff. anytime i asked about a different rod they would show me really nice one's at 150$ or higher mark. would something like this pair up with that reel fine?http://www.basspro.com/St-Croix-Triumph-Series-Spinning-Rods/product/103653/?cmCat=CROSSSELL_PRODUCT Quote
Arv Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 I'd look to spend about 100 on the rod and about 50 on the reel. Lots of options at those prices imo Quote
sofarfrome Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 This rod: http://www.basspro.com/St-Croix-Triumph-Series-Spinning-Rods/product/103653/ This reel: http://http://www.basspro.com/Pflueger-President-6900-Series-Spinning-Reels/product/10213341/ Get the 6935 I have this set up and it is excellent. IMHO the best $150 you can spend on a spinning rig. Quote
