I've asked resources and done some research and havent been able to find a whole lot to help me. I fish a local pand that has a lot of largemouth bass in it ranging from 6oz all the way up to 5lbs, and I've had some pretty good luck with the smaller ones but I can't seem to land anything over a pound. I've thrown the most of my tackle box at them with no luck. it can only be fished from the banks, it's not terribly deep, its mostly open water with little to no cover and no underwater logs/trees/rocks, etc...and Im lost as to how i can land a pig!!

you guys should link the bank fishing threads with the most info in them and pin them so newbies can read that first before they ask

You make a good point.... and I also think the new crop of members should familiarize themselves with this site before they post. I know its very exciting to make your very own first post... i know I was... however, if you take a moment to really peruse through the threads you will quickly see all the pinned conversations and recent topics. ;)

If everyone did serious research beforehand you'd see a lot fewer posts. If that's what's wanted, fine. Otherwise expect repeat questions.

WVBassin87, don't feel bad we were all newbies at one point and have all made mistakes at one point. The important thing is you are here and getting involved. There is loads of information on this site if you search. Just keep posting away and someone will give you a positive response. The more you use the site the better you will get. Good luck!

I have 4 poles ranging from ultra light to medium, 3 spinning and one baitcaster. I've got mono on the spinning and braided on my baitcaster, Im not the greatest fisherman and don't know too many techniques outside of the basics

Well for starters how do you know your pond has a big un. Some ponds dont. Learn to read cover. Good cover can be overhanging branches, weeds, and fallen trees. Learn all you can about where bass go and what time and why. The Hunt for her never ends my friend. You just get good at hunting.

If he had access to a float tube.... Wouldn't he not be posting a FLOAT TUBE post?!?!? Some people are new to the sport and don't know if the will continue it in the future. As fishermen it's out job to get ANY and all types of people into the sport of fishing. People need not be discouraged about having to buy expensive equipment just to BEGIN to enjoy fishing.

Dang, y'all spent more time whingin on about what post where and Gene was the only one that bothered to actually help (not surprising). You all wasted more board space complaining about a post than OP actually posting here. That's a nice "how'd'ya do and welcome aboard" if I've ever seen one.

To OP: I fish a pond like the one you mention and you have to find ANYTHING that creates ANY kind of break in the bottom or the surface. Look for any bottom contour changes (drop offs, points, ledges), any weed beds or weed edges or ANY shoreline outcroppings. if you are confident there are fish there, they will be on anything "out of the ordinary" and not just swimming in the middle. Take a bottom contact bait (texas rig, jig, Carolina rig) and fan cast wherever you can. Make a note of what you feel and what the area was like when you get bit. This, of course, is if you cannot obtain a topo map and since you say it's a pond, chances are slim that one exists. If you can walk the perimeter unabated, do that. Cast every which way possible: straight out from shore, parallel to shore and at an angle. get some polarized sunglasses and keep an eye on what the surface of the water is doing because that will give you an idea of what is going on down below. Look to see where fish are jumping or where other predators are (cranes or other birds picking off baitfish).

I will agree with your comment about Gene helping by suggesting that the OP watch his video (we all know how great and informative his video's are). However with the OP's response of "but Im not looking to watch a video, i joined to actually get some help and opinons.", it seems increasingly more difficult to help someone that won't help themselves.

Just an observation.

I guess if we all "did serious research before posting" there wouldn't be a need for message boards now would there?  I have done a great deal of research and still have to ask questions because I enjoy communicating with others that are into the sport to get all angles and perspectives to what my question is pertaining.  I'm a newbie and crave information on bass fishing.  How can we newbies be expected to learn without asking questions?  I understand linking threads/info for topics that are frequently addressed but don't be so abrasive to the new people.

I mostly bank fish local ponds as well and I have found that most bass tend to lay shallow around the pond edges under shade if there is any, so working the bank with a topwater frog or texas rigged plastic (senko, worm, craw, creature, etc) early in the morning or later in the evenings produce bass for me.  I love the smaller 4 inch senkos or Yum Dingers for ponds.  Smaller baits can really produce when full size baits won't in ponds.

you have absolutely hit the nail right on the head, ive been fishing for a long time since I was in diapers and the people arent the same anymore, people forgot the bacis's how they got started out and it was mostly with cheap spinning reels and rods with small amounts of things little money to invest, now people look down on others if they dont have a 4 or 5 hundred dollar set up or a brand new bass boat or thing's like that and its crazy, encourage not discourage!

Everything you really need to know is out there flying around on the net.  The good thing about a message board is that most of that information is in one place and easier to find.  The bad thing about any message board are conflicting opinions, that can confuse a new fisherperson.  Once the basics are understood nothing beats real time on your body of water, common sense goes a long way.

There are thousands upon thousands of people fishing using equipment in all price ranges.  From the newest amateur to the seasoned angler to the professional and commercial fisherman, all kinds of different brands and models are being used and catching fish.  This term "best" is pure lunacy, no one can possibly use everything made to compare as what is the best, which really brings these opinions to no more than personal favorites.  All that matters is the fish on the end of the line, spend what you are comfortable with and have fun.

This isn't the typical 3 minute You Tube how to video. Gene's videos are very informative and I have learned lots by watching them. The one mentioned above about bank fishing is actually a discussion with other members of the BassResource community and is filled with some very good information. I even picked up some tips and I have been fishing for awhile. It will be well worth your time to watch.

It gets off track some but not for long and Gene steers it back on course. The off topic info is also very good. I'm sure I missed something and will be watching it again on a rainy day when I'm stuck in the house.

Fishing from the bank (or wading) is no different than fishing from a boat, I even make an outboard motor sound when I head to the next spot...
