Looking at getting a new baitcaster combo.  I fish a little bit of everything and don't have the money to buy a pole for each type.  What kind of rod/reel should I look for?

IMO the bass pro qualifier/carbonlite combo is one of the best values at $159.  I have more expensive stuff, but this combo is still always with me.  The pro qualifier has dual brakes and the carbonlite is light sensitive rod.  Bass pro shop also stands behind their products.  Get the 6.4 reel and a 7' medium-heavy/ fast rod.  This set up is versatile enough to do just about anything:  t-rig, jigs, spinnerbaits, senkos, flukes etc..

A good all around setup is a MH/Fast rod with a 6.x to 1 reel. You will get all kinds of responses as to brands, mostly based on what the responder has themselves. I would suggest going to a store and trying out a few rods/reel combos to see what feels comfortable to you.

If I were to buy me one all around combo, I would go with MH/F 6'9" rod with 7.1 to 1 reel. Shorter rods will let me use it in tight spots, especially if your fishing involves in bank fishing with trees behind/above you. 7.1 because I have no problem going slow with it. But I think other posters advice above are more of main stream.

I picked up the new Curado and a Shimano Sellus for my "all-around" rod that I can pretty much throw anything with.

The reel is a 6.3:1 and the rod is a 6'8" MH/Fast.

I have a dedicated worm/jig rod and crankbait rod but this one is the one I use the most especially if I'm bank fishing and only want to carry one reel/rod.

What do you already have? You need a MHF either 7' or 6'6, and a MF either 7' or 6'6. After that you are in tech-specific rods, topwater, crankbait, flipping, frogging, etc. As for brand.. there's only a hundred options so pick what has the best reviews in your price range and then see if it feels good in your hands.

As for reels, a 7:1 lews will do you well. They are about the best all-around reels IMO. If you get into cranking then you can pick up a crankbait rod and a slower reel.

I agree on the combo but really like my 7.1:1; I can always reel slower if necessary.

If you have the cash pick up a Metanium. Its casting range is enormous and there are plenty of different spool options.[/quote

I'm pretty sure the OP doesn't want to spend $400 on just a reel not your average person is going to drop that kind of money. I however am a huge fan of JDM tackle and I follow it heavily I have 3 Metaniums, 1 Antares, steez, etc I also just got ahold of a jackall poison adrena but that's just what I enjoy spending my money on and I don't have kids so I can do it.

Well the guy never stated his budget. And getting one reel that can do everything well would actually save him money vs multiple combos as he said.

IMO get the new Curado I and pair it up with the most talked about $100 rods on bassresource. You will enjoy this combo for many years to come.

A suggestion is to tell us your price point for a combo and we can give you a better idea what to look for.

Daiwa Exceller 6.3 ret. and the most expensive rod you can afford, but try it first. The rod is more important IMHO if you get a good decent Baitcaster to go with it. The new Exceller is a really good reel with great big brass gears and lots of drag, $99.

All good advice , however do not over look Academy Sports H20 Xpress Mettle bait cast reel for under $60 . This is a solid all aluminum  little reel  I started out with - and with regular care  it still is in use today !
