airborne_angler Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 Found a bag of tackle at a local Thrift store. In the bag were some Tungsten egg Weights with inserts. What if anything is the difference between weights with inserts vs without inserts? Quote
quanjig Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 I think when tungsten weight first hit the market, a lot of them had inserts because they had such rough edges where the line entered and exited the weight. This newer generation of tungsten weights seem to be manufactured a little better with smoother bores thru the body. Might just be me but I've switched over to tungsten exclusively and haven't had any problems with them. I think Aaron Martens has a YouTube vid about making inserts for tungsten with shrink tube if you're interested! Quote

airborne_angler Posted June 19, 2014 Author Posted June 19, 2014 Ok so from the sounds of it...inserts in Tungsten isn't a bad thing. I've lost entire Carolina rigs when throwing Tungsten without inserts...i always forget to check my line... Quote
livetofish28 Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 I use strike king tour grade tungsten and its insert free and is extremely smooth inside and out. i believe it varies by brand tight lines Andrew 2 Quote
Phoenix Guy Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 I prefer insert free. They seem smoother. 1 Quote
bassinyea Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 I was using insert free tungsten weights and noticed that every so often I was breaking off a fish on the hookset especially when fishing laydowns with pegged creature baits. I was using 25 lb fluoro. Not cheap fluorocarbon either. I thought that the line was definately heavy enough so I was kinda stumped for a while about why it was happening. Watched the Aaron Martens video and started adding inserts to all of my tungsten weights, which mostly are strike king brand because I can pick them up at wal mart really easily. Since doing this, I have not broke off a single fish on the hookset. I feel it has definately helped. I also bought some Reins tungsten bullet weights and they come with inserts. They worked great too but are more expensive than doing it yourself with the heat shrink tubing. If you are fishing weights without inserts, especially if you are pegging your weight, pull your bobber stop up and feel your line after flipping or pitching for about an hour or so. Every time I do this I can feel that the line has a different texture (doesn't feel frayed really just kinda rubbed feeling) where the weight was up against the line. With inserts my line never feels like it has been rubbed under the weight. Quote
