Muzz22 Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 I thinking of getting kayaks within a year which would be the better choice old town mx or hobie pro angler? They both have great reviews and I really don't care about the price if the performance backs it up. I never want to flip/get wet on my fishing journeys. Which would you suggest Quote
BrianSnat Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 I really like the idea of the Mirage drive on the Hobie. No need put down your rod to use the paddle in order to maneuver the boat. Sorry to break it to you, but you will get wet in any sit on top kayak. Quote
CJV Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 You will always get wet in a kayak and or flip it once or twice that's just part of it. Happens if everyone as some point Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted June 19, 2014 Super User Posted June 19, 2014 I might be a little rusty on my kayak knowledge but those are completely different boats. One is pedal drive and is more of a boat while the predator is a paddle kayak. Not to mention a significant price difference. I have never heard of a pro angler tipping except in extreme off shore type situations. You will also have to consider transporting the boat as the PA is a pig and most opt for a trailer but there are also some that cartop them too. Go paddle or pedal them and see what you think is my advice Your decision would be made pretty quickly then I believe Quote

GADawgs Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 In order to give a better reccomendation tell us where you will be using it, size of lake/river/pond and your budget. As Flyfisher mentioned, they are very different boats but are both a good choice depending on what you want it for. Either way you are gong to drop at least $1300 for the boat, and figure another $300-$700 for a quality paddle and PDF. So.....the best thing you can do is to test paddle them both and see which you like better. If you are dropping that much coin, you really should take the time to try both to figure out which you like better. Quote
MikeinFresno Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 the PA is BIG and heavy, it will be hard to load-unload in comparison to the Predator. Predator is very stable too. If you have knee problems then the PA may not be so good for you. When I borrowed a Hobie I felt the pain in moments and for a couple of days. The PA is a cadillac tho. Quote
tntitans21399 Posted June 20, 2014 Posted June 20, 2014 Hobie is usually a better bost while Old Town has cheaper boats. I would pick the hobie. Quote

Yeah, I was going to start a new thread on how I think that Hobie Mirage kayak looks more like a full fledged boat and not a kayak. I'm getting tired of turning on kayak fishing tournaments on TV and seeing all of them in peddle drive kayaks. Quote

It probably has something to do with the only shows that consistently show kayaks are sponsored by Hobie. I am personally looking to get a pedal drive yak this fall most likely but am leaning towards the propel system myself. Quote
