airborne_angler Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 How much of a difference does FC make over Mono when cranking? How much depth is actually gained when throwing a CB on FC? I'm currently respooling my cranking outfit and am thinking of switching back to mono as a way of saving money. Will I notice THAT much of a difference? Quote
quanjig Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 If you have a glass rod, I would use floro, composite rod, mono. That's what I prefer. Glass rod with mono gives me too much "sponge" and I have a hard time feeling bottom comp and light biters. I have thrown floro on composite rods but had problems pulling hooks from fish??!! A lot has to do with personal preference, I'm just letting you know what works for me so far!! Quote
Kevin22 Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 Not much. When you see the depth # on the crankbait package, that was probably metered with 10# mono. Unless you are fishing DT22's or 6XD's and trying to really get down there, I don't think mono is going to hurt you. But I would try to avoid a stretchy mono with a crankbait rod. Have you thought about trying a co-poly? They are medium priced, you can get yo-zuri hybrid 12lb for $16 at TW. That's for 600 yards. Quote

If the line is the same diameter (0.011 for example) the difference in actual diving depth between premium mono and FC is minimal, a few inches, with equal length cast, same lure and retrieve speed.Tom Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted June 18, 2014 Global Moderator Posted June 18, 2014 I use a composite rod with 12# yo zuri and wouldnt change. I tryed mono originally and it was just too much give. The yo zuri gives just the right amount stretch that I like. Mike Quote

Tom True, but here is a problem with your post, 0.11 diameter suffix mono is 8lb test line, .011 is 12lb test in Seaguar InviszX. So to compare apples to apples you would need to use lines rated at the same braking strength, so 12lb suffix is .014 in diameter and again 12lb InviszX is .011 FC line with its density and line diameter in the same braking strength will get you more than a few inches deeper. In fact, it will increase your depth by as much as 10% according to Dr. Steven Holt and Mark Romanack, Authors of the book Precision Cranking. "A given crankbait runs approximately 20 percent deeper with 8-pound-test monofilament than with 14-pound test. On 20-pound test, the crankbait runs 10 percent shallower than on 14-pound test."The line diameter and the distance of the cast are the two primary factors that influence a crankbait's diving depth," notes Romanack. "If you want a crankbait to get deeper, switch to lighter line. Thinner line casts farther, which also increases the depth." Quote
TorqueConverter Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 Fluorocarbon line pulling your crankbait down and making it dive deeper than rated because the line sinks, is a myth until proven otherwise. Invisible pulls baits down like lead core burns knots The stuff is magic! Quote

airborne_angler Posted June 19, 2014 Author Posted June 19, 2014 Ya know...i never thought about the whole sinking thing on CB's. How can it cause a crank to dive deeper when most cranks float... Quote

Super User Raul Posted June 19, 2014 Super User Posted June 19, 2014 So do you think that a floating line like mono (Nylon) will cause a crankbait to run a little shallower?I seriously doubt it. Quote
JGBassinAL Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 I use glass rods and fluoro like mentioned earlier. They way I look at it, a 12 lb fluoro normally has a smaller diameter than a 12 lb mono, so the crank bait will go deeper on the fluoro with a smaller diameter. It all has to do with line diameter, at least in my opinion. I use 10 lb fluoro on my deep crankin setups, and sometimes 8 lb if I want to get it really deep. Quote
airborne_angler Posted June 19, 2014 Author Posted June 19, 2014 On a crankbait it doesn't seem like FC could make a difference. If you throw a crank on FC, It generally lands in the water and if you don't crank while your picking out your birds nest, the bait just sits there and "bobs"(all buoyant like) The FC doesn't make the bait sit any deeper.Youd think that Mono would actually get a crankbait deeper because of line stretch. FC doesn't stretch so the bait can't stretch the line longer to make the bait go deeper... Quote
skeletor6 Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 With a quality fluorocarbon, abrasion resistance will be higher, equal diameter lines will run deeper, and drag/bow will be lower.. However, if price is your number one concern, then just get mono. Fluorocarbon is not worth getting if you buy cheap. Use backing if you decide to stick with FC to save for the cost. In all honesty, I love using FC, but for cranking in low abrasive areas, I do not feel I am losing much using mono. Quote
