DropTheBass Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 Okay guys, I'm really confused. I've been trying to discover what kind of hooks are used for drop shotting. Gamakatsu calls them Drop shot/split shot hooks (which is straightforward), Owner calls them Mosquito hooks, and Lazer calls them Drop shot Octopus hooks. Some say that they are generically called octopus hooks but brands like to put their own label on them. The true identification of the name of the hook used for drop shot is obscure to me and I would be thankful if you guys would help me out here. Quote
5dollarsplash Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 I don't think your going to get a clear cut answer. They are called all the things you mentioned and more. I think if your trying to discuss Drop Shot Hooks, that is the term I'd choose. Unless I'm completely misunderstanding your question, in which case disregard the above. 1 Quote
michang5 Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 I alternate between the Gamakatsu Drop/Shot Split Shot hooks you mentioned and the Mustad UltraPoint Drop Shot/Live Bait hooks (pic below). I switch between the two purely based on price and size availability. Because I lose so many drop-shot rigs (mostly) fishing from the bank, I try to find the cheapest hook that I have confidence in. Both have performed well, bringing in bass up to my PB 7.25#. The Gamakatsu I use are Size 1 or 1/0. The Mustads are larger than comparably sized Gammys, so I use the Size 2. Quote
speed craw Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 Owner 1\0 mosquito best dropshot I have found to date Quote
Mike2841 Posted June 18, 2014 Posted June 18, 2014 I've been using size #1 owner bait hooks with no complaints. Quote

But yeah, the reason why I'm asking this is to see if I can find any cheaper versions of the mainstream hooks I mentioned above. Quote
Kevin22 Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 I just use octopus hooks in #2 usually for worms. #1 for minnows. Quote

I've been able to find the Mustads at different Academys around town. They're about $2.50 for a pack of 6. It is odd that one store will have them, while another a few miles away will never carry them. The Gamakatsus usually go on sale for about the same price as the Mustads at D I C K S Sports Goods. BasshunterJGH Posted July 16, 2014 Posted July 16, 2014 I prefer roboworms as dropshot baits and I use roboworms rebate hook and owner mosquito. T-rigging w/ the rebarbs makes them last longer. Quote

Specifically, there are several brands that are almost identical to the Gammy Drop/Split hooks. Hayabusa makes one, Damiki Viper, Skinny Bear EWG Drop Shot, etc. The Hayabusa are pretty decent hooks, and they're popular in Japan from various sites I read when researching. Quote
