Just looking to get an idea how you guys prefer to fish your jigs. Hop them or drag the bottom?

I try to do a mix of things, but the fish will ultimately tell you how to fish it.  Usually during the first few casts (from shore), I drag the bottom to see what the bottom is like.  If it comes back with weeds or if I run into any rocks.  If I hit a rock, I'll try a little hop to get over the rock and drag/hop back to shore.  If it's weeds I'll swim it back, but I usually go to a jig after going through my faster presentation baits (crankbaits and spinnerbaits).  My problem is that sometimes I fish the jigs too fast and have to tell myself to slow down.

I will drag more then hop. I think horizontal movement is very important. If I am fishing a swimjig then I will swim it.

Drop it, drag it, hop it, swim it, jig it. twitch it. pop it...there are probably 1000 different ways to fish a jig.  Today I was pitching one into fallen trees and just picking it up and letting it pendulum down out of the tree towards deeper water.  After it hit the bottom again I would wait about 3 seconds and then pick it up and let it pendulum down the slope again.  If no bites I re cast and kept doing that.  Hooked into a big fish doing this but he spit the jig because I didn't get a good yank on him...woulda probably have been a new PB as well.

I used to hop them, lately it seems like they've preferred the drag though, at the least the bigger fish have and that's what's important.

So many hits have come as I'm shaking the jig in place. I'll hop it or drag it a few times, then pause for a few seconds and then I'll start shaking it in place.

Does dragging a jig differ from dragging a C-Rig. How are the bites similar...how are they different? Is it safe to say that if you've got confidence dragging a C-Rig, that it shouldn't be tough to have confidence in dragging a jig? True or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I do it all.  I probably drag a football jig more than anything, think about rolling a football on the ground it's unpredictable as to how it will roll.  Same thing with a football jig.  When I'm dragging a football jig and I feel it come up against a rock or snag I'll let it sit for a second then pop it off, get a lot of bites after you pop it off.  Another technique I like in deep water is stroking a jig 4-6' and letting it fall.

I hop 'em, drag 'em, swim 'em, and dead stick 'em, but mostly I'm pitching 'em to laydowns or pockets in the weeds.

About the only thing I don't do that some have said, is shake rattle and roll 'em.  Don't know how, but I'd like to see Brian doing it. :laugh5:
