Grass In 10 Fow --- What Are You Throwing?

I've made it a point this year to fish exclusively submerged grass since that is one of my remaining weak points. It's a full blown summer bite in Louisiana at the moment and the grass is in 10-15ft of water. What are you guys throwing? Water clarity is around 4 feet.

 

 

So far I've had success on a Senko through the grass, shakey head around the edges... that's it. I'm pretty much at a loss to be honest

If you have a decent sonar on your boat you should be able to see how high off the bottom the grass comes.  Figure out how tall the grass is growing down there and rig up a drop shot and make your leader long enough that it will put your bait above the grass.

Grass comes up about 1.5ft and I've tried it, but no luck so far.

Try a 3/4 oz rattle trap.  Let it get down and tick the grass and when you feel it start to bog down...rip it out hard and fast....just like KVD does.  You said you have had some success fishing the edge of the grass.  I would continue to fish the outside edge that is where the fish should be right now.

Texas rig or Jig-n-Craw

Been very successful in that situation this year with 1/8oz ballhead jigs slid into Zoom's new Swimmin Super Fluke Jr. Here they seem to like Smokin Shad and Bluegill Flash the best. Cast it as far as you can. Let it sink to the bottom and bring it back by picking up your rod tip and taking up the slack. This's been very effective here in New England and worked well on Pickwick in the spring.

I start at the outer edge, the edge you have find with you depth finder.

I position my boat within casting distance of this edge. You can throw a 3/16 - 1/4 oz Texas rig, a 1/4 - 3/8 oz jig, or a 3/8 oz Carolina rig. I'll work the contour of the outer grass, if I don't contact bass I'll move the lenght of a cast towards the thicker grass.

As I approach the thickest grass I've switched to pitching distance, then flipping/punching distance. I also change weights according to grass thickness.

Once I cantact bass I kick a buoy over & work that area in an widing circle.

Finesse c-rig. I guess it's basically a split shot rig. Throw a zoom trick worm and slowly drag it. It should be light enough to sit on top of the grass. I have had super great success doing this.

So far this year, my best keeper bass tactic has been a 1/2 oz jika rig - creature bait or lizard - 15 or 17lb fluorocarbon line, pitched to edge of grass lines at the depths you're talking about.  For me, the advantage of a jika rig over a tx rig is that it drops straight down better on a semi-slack line.

 

The previous suggestion of trying to tick the tops of the grass with a heavier than normal rattle trap type bait is a good idea and one I'll try next time I go.

Faced that the other day - best bet was lipless cranks tickling the tops of the grass and action plastics (ribbon tails, Cut-R's, twin grubs, etc) lightly t-rigged and retrieved erratically above and through the grass.

I love swim jigs over grass. Swim it, drop it into the holes, sit for a min, pop her up and keep swimming. I have had great success with this

Lipless crank bait , ripping it out of grass , 1/2  - or heavier swim jig or chatter bait . Depending on depth 1/2 oz spinnerbait around grass edges . Also a finesse jig I prefer a screw lock spot remover ( buckeye ) wire tied skirted jig and full size trailer around the grass edges or when you pull it into open holes in the grass . Also as stated a drop shot with a long tag end , is especially deadly in grass , use the cylindrical weights for me at least less hang ups .

If they are aggressive topwater, lipless CB's, Square bills that nip the tip.

 

If they are semi-aggressive/reactive on the bottom - baby brush hog, beaver type bait

 

If they are picky ... , mojo rig, senko.

been burning a Jika rig across the tops of the grass down here with really good success.  Let it fall on the edges and they smash on it!

WOW! Great ideas in here! Glad I posted. Went fishing today and had some very unusual conditions to face --- very cloudy skies, foggy, good wind blowing. My only success today was working the edges with a floating rattle rouge
