Super User Raider Nation Fisher Posted June 18, 2014 Super User Posted June 18, 2014 Ya right try carrying that anchor around all day, and in a 6" Revolver. The case of the 45/70 negates it to the power available from the 454 and 475 in a short barreled wheel gun. It has to much capacity to burn the faster powders well, and to short a barrel to benefit any real velocity from the the slower powders that make it adequate in a long gun. The Mod. 83 shown w/340grain .45 Cal. loads known as a 454 Casull, about as stout a load as you will find a pakage this small, unless you want to risk your wrist to the 475 Linebaugh, all much better than the anemic 45/70 in a revolver!! Probably why they are so popular as they are. Â Alonerankin2 you forgot the 2 in front of that $179, you must have meant $2179.00, back then maybe $1790.00 Oh ho. Someone I can talk firearms with! Very good point you make there. That's the first picture i have ever seen of a 45-70 revolver. I was unaware they even made them until I made that post. Quote
BassnChris Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 Â And there's even one person on this message board that told me of a bone-chilling experience he had years ago, although it wasn't in the PNW. That would be me. I went camping with my girlfriend and dog when I was 19 in 1981, in the Sierra Nevadas in Southern California . We drove several miles along a fire road without any sign of cabins, campers or people to the site where we decided to make camp. Had dinner and by the time we finished it an hour past dark. We climbed into the open bed of my pickup and settled down to sleep. After 15 or 30 minutes my dog had raised up and was growling as he looked off the left side (4 o'clock position)of my truck. I nudged him with my foot and told him to knock it off. A few minutes later he was back up growling at about the 5 or 6 o'clock position.....I nudged him again and said shut up.....the mountains are full of squirrels, deer and what not so I wasn't worried. This growling nudging cycle continued.....7, 8 and 9 o'clock position. But at the 9 o'clock position as I was nudging and in the middle of my telling him to knock it off......I looked out and a 5-6 to 6-0 ft dark figure that was just standing there about 50-60 feet from the truck. I grabbed my shotgun and hollered, "who's there?" ......."I have a gun and I'll shoot!"......hollered a few more times with no reaction.......then chambered a round and hollered again. Any human would have hauled out of there with the chambering of a round.....at this point I was afraid for my life and the life of my girl friend....so I pulled the trigger. I refocused after the recoil and the figure was gone. I told my girl friend to get in the cab and we were taking off.......I was never so scared as when I turned on the headlights......fearing it would be in front of us. Got out without incidence.........went back with my friends the next day.......found a small spatter of blood on some leaves where I recalled the figure standing but the ground, leaves were not disturbed and there was nothing else there. Bigfoot, Sasquatch or boogie man.....I don't know. What I do know/believe is dogs don't have an imagination.........dog saw something and tracked it around the truck as it circled us. A person (sane person anyway) will not just stand there with someone hollering and racking a round into a shotgun. And a person if hit with shotgun pellets will generally make some sound when hit......and will generally make a lot of racket while running away. Bottom line.....if you say you've seen Bigfoot or Sasquatch , I won't laugh, doubt you or pass judgment. I have no plans to fish loch ness either! 3 Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 19, 2014 Super User Posted June 19, 2014 Kevin, you cannot set traps for trespassers. Â The family that started the Big Foot hoax came forward a few years ago and showed the costume to the TV crews filming the story. Â Probably some kids playing pranks on you. Â I strongly agree with the trail camera. We have one in our back yard and have picked up deer, possum, squirrels, birds and a raccoon plus the yard guys and my family. Out of fear that it's a bear I keep ole scout my trusty hunting dog inside. He just won't shut up. He just sits at the door until the point in the night that he just whines his butt off. Almost like a little dog with someone standing over him with a whip. That's why I think it's a bear. Wouldn't he just bark till he seized up if it were anything smaller? But sir that is one heck of a story and I highly doubt you are kidding because that was one long paragraph that somebody faking wouldn't write. But anytime a Bigfoot story comes up you kind if think in the back of your mind "are they lying?" But I believe you. That's one experience that I would never forget. Quote

We had 6 feist we were running one day, come up on a decent sized black bear. Those little dogs weren't backing down either. They wanted some of that bear. We managed to call em back before anything happened though. It was quite scary. Especially, since according to Alabama's wonderful DNR there are only 6 bears supposedly in the state. So its a felony to shoot one. To hell with the fact people see hundreds of them all over the state. If that dogs whining like you say then something is wrong. That's either one helluva a bear or you got something else going on. I still say get on the roof with a rifle and blow a hole through its chest, whatever it is. d**n I wanna drive to Georgia so bad now.... Quote

Super User NorcalBassin Posted June 19, 2014 Super User Posted June 19, 2014 Chris... that is a story that will undoubtedly be in your head forever and I may have to scare the heck out of the kids with it around the fire next time we're out camping. I can only imagine how freaked out I would have been, especially that far out into the woods. Thank goodness you had the dog and shotgun with you! My kids watch Finding Bigfoot every week, and on one of the episodes a couple seasons back I think someone may have had a similar encounter as yours in the Southern Sierras.  Nuff... all dogs are different but my experience is more along the lines with Raider. I live up in the Central Sierras and sometimes we'll get bears or mountain lions close by on the property that turn my retriever into an impressively courageous character. He gets an incredibly deep growl and wants to get out the door in a very bad way. It's quite entertaining and I sure as heck don't let him out. Our last golden was the same way on a camping trip... campground in the Eastern Sierra (Upper Twin Lakes) used to "invite" bears into the large campground by leaving the lids off all of the garbage cans. There would be bears walking through the campground mid-day, and any time we came across them she wanted a piece of them... definitely no whimpering. That night we had a black bear rivaling the size of a small adult grizzly trying to get at the ice chest locked in the back of my dad's F250 4x4 maybe 15 feet from the tent, and we literally had to hold her back from running after him. Moral to my story is that in my experience your dog probably isn't whimpering over a bear...  Quote

nuffsaid23, if you want to scare the bigfoot off, set up game cams around your house. also, you should probably be leaving the apples and grapes in the woods on a stump or something, dont put them out on your porch....   meanwhile, i just read this awesome report on the BFRO website http://www.bfro.net/GDB/show_report.asp?id=41601 Quote

Do we honestly think that a 3-4 year old girl is going to fake a Bigfoot? And she doesn't even know what they are? But that's crazy a Bigfoot coming into the house and giving the girl a bloody nose.... What do you figure she means by they "talk" to her? Quote

apparently the bigfoot gave her a bloody nose through the open window.  as for talking to her, apparently bigfoots have the ability to mindspeak or talk to you inside your head. ive read that before. its one of the more "off the wall" things ive read before, but ive read about it more than once. they also have the ability to cloak apparently... speed craw Posted June 19, 2014 Posted June 19, 2014 In reference to bigfoot and reading thoughts , my wife  has the uncanny ability to know when i'm about to let one rip and sends me a look like I swear to god .
