I think that was a fair statement to make in 1911. Planes and bombs in those days were lousy. It wasn't until WWII that air power and strategic bombing made any significant impact on warfare. Quote

That is true to a certain point, but it also exemplifies the lack of understanding and imagination, the tank, 1911 is only 3 years from the beginning of WWI by the end of it machines like airplanes and tanks had already proven their importance in modern warfare. Another example with weapons was the "experts" removing cannons and machineguns from modern combat aircraft, they believed that missiles would take the place of cannons and machin guns which proved to be catastrophic to US pilots during the early stages of the Vietnam war, vietnamese pilots flew Russian/Chines planes that had cannons, many state of the art US fighter planes didn´t have them ( like the F4 ). Well there were other factors besides the cannon issue. For instance, the F-105 Thunderbolt was designed to deliver a tactical nuclear weapon but carried out conventional duties during Rolling Thunder. The maneuverable MiGs that the NVA flew were not only very good aircraft in their own right but especially effective against slow, clunky American fighter-bombers. Combine that with the Vietnamese tendency to hit and run rather than dogfight and it's no wonder that the U.S. bombing effort wasn't effective (paraphrasing here, there were lots of reasons). Also the F-4 was more of an anti-SAM strike aircraft. It wasn't designed to dogfight, which I suppose explains the lack of cannon. You certainly know your stuff. High five! Quote
