airborne_angler Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Typically after how long without a fish while cranking does everyone retie? I've gone out recently and thrown a crankbait for the majority of my time on the water.Havent caught anything and eventually ended up launching the crank across the lake after breaking off on the cast(at least twice) So how often should I retie? I haven't been running into any kind of cover or structure, with the exception of pulling up Milfoil from time to time. Quote
Super User MarkH024 Posted June 16, 2014 Super User Posted June 16, 2014 I'd check your line either with your finger tips or tongue about every 2-3 casts. Anything that feels like a bump or nick, cut off and retie above that spot. If you're in weeds and not bottom bouncing in rock or wood you can probably get away with every 8-10 casts. All it takes is one little twig or rock to create the slightest nick in the line and it will be enough to do exactly what happend. Quote
Super User Raul Posted June 16, 2014 Super User Posted June 16, 2014 My friend it´s not a matter of time, it´s a matter of you checking your line on a regular basis looking for signs of wear, abrassion, nicks or cuts, how often ? that depends on the kind of cover you are fishing. Check, cut and retie as needed. Quote
TNBassin' Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 I check my line every few casts. If it's nicked, I retie especially with fluorocarbon. Quote
Fish Murderer 71 Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 I've fished all afternoon with Abrazx catching 10+lbs hybrids not once re-tying just to see how long I could go. I limited out and went home before re-tying. I dont recommend this to anyone, but it shows how good Seagur line is. rule of thumb... when in doubt- retie! Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted June 17, 2014 Super User Posted June 17, 2014 This is why I cringe every time I here beginners talk about using snaps. I crank with fluoro and usually get a pretty good amount of casts in before I retie but I check my line every few casts when fishing cover/structure. Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted June 17, 2014 Super User Posted June 17, 2014 I've been cranking with 12lb Shooter and I don't retie unless I change baits. 1 Quote
Super User Catch and Grease Posted June 17, 2014 Super User Posted June 17, 2014 When im fishing my squarebills around timber and rocks I have to re-tie quite a bit with braid due to frays and stuff of that sorts Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted June 17, 2014 Global Moderator Posted June 17, 2014 I have to check nearly every cast with a lot of the lakes around here having zebra mussels. If you've never had the pleasure, it's like cranking through razor blades. I caught a piece of grass the other day and went to snap my bait to clear the weed and it was just gone, cut like a pair of scissors. Thankfully it was a floating bait so after a few seconds waiting I retrieved it and went back to fishing it. Quote
deadadrift89 Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 I'll add when checking dont limit it to a few inches around lure make sure to go several feet up line. Quote
