dam0007 Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 Some of you guys know awhile back I bought this combo (using Cabelas points ) Have been using it for top water. Its a 6'6" MH/F. Reel is 6:1. Had a couple fish over past year or so, nothing crazy, just a couple 12 inchers. Well this weekend I didnt expect 3# Smallies to be hammering my Sammy. The drag is almost not enough on this reel. If I would have got a 4+lber to hit, he would of dived in the weeds and it would be a wrap. Had it as tight as I could and they were pulling line like crazy. Rod handled awesome though. Managed about 5 fish on it before the top water bite died down Friday. Just gotta say it was fun as hell during practice fighting em out. On Saturday during Tourney not so much. lol Any of you young guys on a budget that need a cheap combo, for fishing from shore in local ponds and such, this combo would be good. Its very light and casts great. From what I've seen lately the price is marked down alot. Quote
Super User aavery2 Posted June 16, 2014 Super User Posted June 16, 2014 Put your thumb on the spool, it will generate a huge amount of drag. I have the Aird spinning reel, have not had a chance to fish it much but so far it has impressed me for the price. Quote
einscodek Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 I didnt get the reel but I am very happy with the aird rods.. great performance given its ridiculously low price IM6 1 Quote
Super User webertime Posted June 16, 2014 Super User Posted June 16, 2014 Maybe the drag is dirty/greasy/wet? I have had Daiwa's that had a drag rating in ounces, they were so light, and they came that way out of the box. I took them apart and cleaned them and they were much better. Check if the Lexa Drag will fit, it has 25% more power. I'd clean it all up first and give it a go again. Quote

The washer sits in a groove in the gear, unlike other reels Ive seen. I wouldnt mind throwing a upgrade in there if it helps. Maybe even a couple bearings. Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted June 17, 2014 Super User Posted June 17, 2014 Hmmmm. It as been stated that your drag should be set at 3 lbs. Can't the Aird reach this? BTW, mine get set heavier than that. Quote

Idk, probably not. lol All my baitcasters are cranked all the way down. I only adjust the drag for finesse stuff. Thats just me. Quote
kstring Posted June 17, 2014 Posted June 17, 2014 I have one aird MH that I enjoy fishing with spinnerbaits. Doesn't have the sensitivity if like for jigs and T rigs Quote
