plural_of_fant Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 What's your target species? I like the penn battles. I use them for inshore flounder fishing in Delaware.. They are nice reels for the price. About as nice to fish as my shimano stradic. The Penn's are a bit heavy but I look at that as a good thing when in the salt. Gives you a better chance if you hook into a random larger fish such as sharks or rays Quote

plural_of_fant Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 The battle in 3000 or 4000 depending on line needs would be a good choice Quote
Jaheff Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 my target species are lingcod, rockfish, sheephead, sandbass and calico bass i fish in southern California. The Avet SXJ without a doubt! 149.00 bucks. if you want a good saltwater forum for So Cal go to bloodydecks.com. Quote
LMB KING Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 The best saltwater reel for that is a Penn Spinfisher V 5500 or 6500 with 30 to 50 pound braid but if you are going to use it on pier, rocks and boat, i would use 20 to 30 pound mono. Quote
dam0007 Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 Shimano Stradic, any van stall, quantum Cabo. For live bait and chunks Shimano bait runner 6500D. I had the Battle and had the problem of bail closing mid cast. Lost a few good plugs because of it. Daiwa Saltist is solid too. All the above I've used or owned Quote
Lucifer Posted June 14, 2014 Author Posted June 14, 2014 Ok I will look into those and rods to pair with reel ? Quote
LMB KING Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 Ok I will look into those and rods to pair with reel ? Ugly stik rods, nothing is cheaper that lasts you for ever than a ugly stik. Ill get the Tiger ugly stik rod, but you can get any ugly stik rods of your choice. A 7 foot, to 10 foot is good, if you are using lures then get the short length (7 foot) if your doing live baits or dead bait then ill get the longer size rods (10 foot) and if you doing both, then ill get something in the middle like 8 or 9 foot. Lucifer Posted June 14, 2014 Author Posted June 14, 2014 Yea I will research the ugly stick tiger rods I was looking at the st. Croix inshore mojo rod are any good Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted June 14, 2014 Super User Posted June 14, 2014 The Avet SXJ without a doubt! 149.00 bucks. if you want a good saltwater forum for So Cal go to bloodydecks.com. This is a b/c not spinning, not a reel to use unless one is proficient in using a reel without a level wind or brake adjustment. They are popular but not a reel for a novice. The poster is looking to spend a top price of $150, yet suggestions are made for Cabos, Van Staals and Saltists. With all due respect to the poster if he were more experienced he wouldn't have to ask what to buy, he'd already know, IMO the Battle isn't a bad choice. I'm not a part time saltwater fisherman, I fish the salt 7 days a week 12 months of the year. As I mentioned on another thread about this same topic I'd get some local knowledge first. Not only am I member here but I'm a member of saltwater forums as well. On one my boards there have been a grand total of 3 posts about tackle in the last few weeks, they pertained to rod building not purchasing anything. On another large forum once again it's about rod building and reel repair, not so much purchasing. I don't know if the saltwater angler is too stupid or doesn't care about equipment or they are already smart enough to know what they want. But I do know this, I have seldom had anyone come up to me to check out my gear or even ask me what kind of line I'm using. We have people fishing the most top of the line equipment along side the Battle and Ugly Stick users) probably the most common set up here), they all catch fish. I do feel equipment should be suited for the environment, in this case a reel designed for saltwater use, that doesn't mean a high price tag is needed. Quote

Lucifer Posted June 14, 2014 Author Posted June 14, 2014 I agree with you sirsnook. I am looking for a new saltwater reel to compete with my dad and his penn conquer . I just heard good things about the Penns so I wanted to get a different option on them or someone who has used them maybe.i want a spinning reel I have a few conventals but those reels are much more special perpose I want a nicer spinning reel just something nicer then my older saltwater reels Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted June 14, 2014 Super User Posted June 14, 2014 IMO can't go wrong with Penn. Not sure what size you are looking for but I would try and match it to the rod, match the rod to the most common place you'll be fishing. Maybe a heavy for a pier, fishing closer to the water maybe a mh. I happen have a conquer myself, nice reel in the $200 range. Quote
LMB KING Posted June 14, 2014 Posted June 14, 2014 Penn Spinfisher V 5500 or 6500 is a perfect choice. It is the best spinning reel Penn makes and its also their flagship spinning reel. It is better than the battle reel and the fierce. look into it. you will love it Quote
Lucifer Posted June 14, 2014 Author Posted June 14, 2014 I was looking at the size 3000 or 4000 Quote
Super User SirSnookalot Posted June 15, 2014 Super User Posted June 15, 2014 After being bored out of my mind reading about the merits and disadvantages of F/C line which I don't use any way, I decided to read some reel reviews. Reviews are very mixed, one reason I normally pay little attention to them. One person loves the battle, another says they corrode while a third says they have corrected that issue. I read a review by a charter captain that swears the conflict is the best reel Penn makes. You are going to read reviews declaring nothing better than a Shimano spheros or Quantum boca in this price range, I've owned most of them and I'm confused just typing this out. Any time I see the word "best" that's a review I find suspect, I don't think best exists. If you want technical info ask 0119, he has a good handle on that stuff, me I just catch fish. I don't recommend specifics, I could come up with reels not even mentioned that are very good too. Your money your decision. 1 Quote
dam0007 Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 For rods, check out Crowder E Series. Made in Florida. same feel as ugly sticks but much lighter and quality cork. Quote
