Ern Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 What are you guys using to lube your reels? Reason I ask I clean a Shimano Symetre FJ last fall. Used white reel grease (looks like Vaseline) and it gummed up in two trips. then the grease got into the pinion shaft and really gummed it up. Three trips and done. There was just enough to cover the cogs on the main gear. That stuff got everywhere. I broke the reel down, cleaned and degreased. Put it back together. No Lube and it is smoother than with the white grease. I mean no lube. no oil. nothing. I have a Abu C4 that got the same lube and it is gummy. Since this stuff is ABU branded. I thinking about sending it and the lube to Abu and telling them to please fix my reel and keep the lube. But in the mean time. What do I use for a reel grease/lube? Thanks, Ern Quote
Mr Swim Jig Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 I use Yamaha Blue Marine Grease, doesn't gum up. Quote
WdyCrankbait Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 Contact Mike at Delaware Valley Tackle. I had the same thing with my Pfluger and he fixed it right up. Plus, he uses a super lube and really helped my 50e. Good luck Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 In a spinning reel I tend to use a little heavier grease. The Marine grease mentioned is a good choice as it will not emulsify easily if in contact with water and is tolerant enough of heat and cold to be good year round. Super Lube is good as well. It's synthetic but a little lighter than the marine grease. It depends on the type of feel you like. For super easy free cranking go with the lighter grease, for a buttery smooth feel go a little heavier. Quote
BobP Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 I don't like grease in spinning reels and prefer a thicker oil like Ardent Reel Butter (not their bearing oil). Grease is needed on baitcaster gears. I use Superlube white PTFE grease, which is an auto grease you can find at NAPA. Quote
Skog Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 I have been using quantum hot sauce grease on gears and oil on bearing in my spinning reels without problem. Tried it on my baitcasters but haven't fished them yet. I also have a tub of cal's drag grease to try also. 1 Quote
Dramer77 Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 I use the quantum hot sauce oil on my bearings etc.. Works great , it's a thinner oild so it makes your reel smoother.. But being thinner you have to oil more often Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 The Hot Sauce grease gums up terribly in my experience. Cal's Universal is a fine choice but again is a little lighter consistency than some other choices. Oil is the wrong choice for gears unless it's a bath system. It may feel nice initially but longevity will suffer. 1 Quote
Capt.Bob Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 On spinning gear I like Cal's drag grease on the pinion and drive gear, but I can't express "lightly" enough! I lightly oil over the grease to thin it a tad more but still holds better than a liquid grease. everything else gets a premium light oil. this allows a reel to be smooth and free in the summer, but on upper 20 and mid 30 degree mornings in March and April up north, they still run smooth and not get that drag on the the handle feeling when reeling like you are talking about from stiff heavy lube. I Also like Shimano Drag grease used the same way. Those that only use reels in a warm climate all the time still have that smooth feel without the gear drag from heavy a heavy lube, will stay pit and work in all climates. Quote
Super User bigbill Posted June 14, 2014 Super User Posted June 14, 2014 I been using moly on everything but the drags. I just purchased Penn lube too. Quote
Capt.Bob Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 i just spray on wd40 This is one of the worst things you can use on a reel!! WD-40 has no use whatsoever servicing a reel, and is quite harmful! I recamend you flush and use a lubricant on them, if you care about your reels. Then keep WD-40 away from them!! Just a word of advice. Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 15, 2014 Super User Posted June 15, 2014 First, grease goes inside your reels, only. NEVER PUT GREASE ON ANYTHING OUTSIDE YOUR REEL'S CASE. You can use any reel oil you wish. 3-in-1 oil works, too. Quote
Super User Sam Posted June 15, 2014 Super User Posted June 15, 2014 And by the way, the new spinning reels have "Do Not Grease" stamped on the spinning reel's ball bearings case. Be very careful when you decide to grease a spinning reel if you don't know what you are doing. Quote

sparky241 Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 I use Luke's red and tacky, it works well in the reel I lubed Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 WD 40, Reel Magic etc. contain petroleum distillates to make them sprayable. These products will actually DERGREASE parts. They work temporarily but are only masking actual problems. Quote
FL Bass Abducter Posted June 16, 2014 Posted June 16, 2014 It makes my reals work 10 times better. i just put little drops on.. Kevin, WD40 is not a lubricant. Quote
