I am about to buy myself a st croix legend tournament rod for graduation/Father's Day. This rod is way out of my normal price range, and probably will be the only one I get, so if I'm going to spend that kind of money I wanted to make it count.

So what technique/rod rating would allow me to take the most advantage of such a nice rod (sensitivity, etc)? My current rods are a 7' MF Avid, 7'1" MHF ***, and a 7'HXF Carbonlite. My reel selection consists of an MGX 7.1, gen3 SXs 6.4 and 7.1, and I'll also be picking up a new chronarch or curado as part of this gift.

I have no troubles selling any of the other rods, if necessary, although I'm a big fan of the Avid. I would like a 6'6"-7' MXF or MLXF, but not sure if that's the most effective use of a $250 rod.

Thank you.

You have to ask yourself what techniques you are going to use the rod for. If it's not a bottom contact technique then you can get away with a cheaper rod. Personally I'd buy a 7' mh/xf or f and make it my primary worm and jig rod. Use your *** for something else like moving baits. Chatterbaits, swim jigs, spinnerbaits, traps, or soft swimbaits.

I have LTB MLXF, Avid ML/Mod, *** MF I truely feel you wont be blown away by the LTB rod or your expectations might not be met. I just dont think there is a very big/noticeable gain from Avid to LTB. I had Avid first as well got a very good deal on the LTB from croix website $115 and very glad I didnt pay full price. If possible buy the LTB rod from a store with easy liberal return policy if happy great but any doubts youll be able to take care of it easier.

I agree with everything the other posters have said.  Bottom contact baits like worms and jigs benefit the most from a sensitive rod.

I was asking what technique to use it for, which you answered. I know enough that using it as a top water rod, would not be an effective use of an expensive rod. I was also thinking maybe finesse? Does finesse require a higher level of sensitivity as bottom contact, or is it simply throwing lighter baits?

To be honest, I want an LTB simply because I absolutely love the blue color. I would be perfectly happy with another avid, or even a lesser rod than that. The local cabellas has one LTB in stock that I have to out my hands on every time I go in there. I've had to stop myself multiple times while carrying it to the register because I couldn't justify the cost. It's also a MF, and actually I like the way my MF avid feels better than the LTB and would agree that the extra cost isn't worth it. So yes, this time I am going to pay the extra money just for the blue color. I just graduated engineering school and started a good job and I got a hiring bonus, and dammit I'm getting an LTB :D

LTB's are sick rods! I love all of mine. I think you're going to like it better than your Avid. As far as techniques that heightened sensitivity is a major benefit, I'd have to say there are 3 : finesse, bottom contact (worms and jigs), and crankbaits. I think it sensitivity is an added benefit in any technique, but these are the 3 that I've noticed the biggest improvements in.

I have to agree, Avid is a very good rod, but the LTB is no slouch!! I own both and the LBT6'8"MXF is not only meant for topwater, but is great for weightless plastics T'riggs and jiggs, very sensitive, I say go for it!! get what you want, I buy elites because I like the handle better than the split grip of the Extreme, I own both and will assure you that either one will bring a smile to your face,  I mean who needs an extreme for crankbaits,,,,,,me,,,,because I like it!! Go for it and let us know how happy you are after you use it, my money say's you will be smiling while your typing!!! :thumbsup1:
