Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted January 14, 2024 Super User Posted January 14, 2024 Awesome Spots! That last one is why N.Cal produces the WR fish. They just get built differently. It's been a long time since I caught a 5lb Spot, grew up catching dozens......having caught a 5lb SM, Spot, and LRGM, the Spot is just that much of a stronger, harder fighting fish imho. Caught this nice Spot on Thurs., weather just wrecked the fishing but it was very much expected. Every day that passes now the lake clarity should return, but we're heading into the coldest 4-5day stretch of the whole year. 23 Quote
thediscochef Posted January 14, 2024 Posted January 14, 2024 😒😒 Wind chill was -7f when I went to work this morning 1 1 4 Quote
Woody B Posted January 14, 2024 Posted January 14, 2024 I skunked yesterday at Lake Muddychuck. I had a plan, but I didn't stick to it. Mike Tyson says "everyone has a plan until they get punched in the mouth". The first part of my plan was to check a creek right across from the landing to see if there was any clearer water. There wasn't and no signs of activity on sonar. The second part of my plan was to go down near the dam. There was 20 mph winds with 30+ mph gusts. It was about a 45 degree cross wind to the direction I was going. I was getting SOAKED by the white caps. I decided to fish a while near the landing, then headed home. I went to Mountain Island Lake today, the next lake up the Catawba river from Wylie/Muddychuck. I had limited time and decided I was going to do "one and done".....meaning catch 1 then head back home. I caught a 16 inch Spot on my 3rd cast.....so I decided to fish a bit longer. ~20 minutes later I caught a 14 inch Spot. The wind was starting to get up so I decided to head home. Next weekend the lows are supposed to be in the teens, with highs around freezing. I probably won't be going then. I caught both on a Damiki Vault. A total of 2 isn't great, but it's WAY better than none. I also caught one of them on my last cast. (like I try to often) 23 Quote
Pat Brown Posted January 14, 2024 Posted January 14, 2024 No boat trips today. It was blowing Winn Dixie and Mrs. Meagan didnt approve of the risk with water being low 40s. We went to the pond for a super muddy water windathon and I managed to finally catch one! Red Eye'd Shad in red got it done. Had maybe two little bumps that didn't connect within the same one hour before sun hit the tree line. Jake's off tomorrow and we may try to focus our efforts more from 10-2 and see what happens. Love the extremely pale color they get when you got 4 inches of visibility!!! 😂😂😂 22 Quote
FishTax Posted January 14, 2024 Posted January 14, 2024 Glad to see my NC buddies getting it done today. I didn't want to deal with the wind so I went to academy to see what's on sale. Big clearance, lots of red lipless on sale from various brands. Pat you may want hit the Burlington store if you have a minute in the next couple days. 3 1 Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted January 15, 2024 Super User Posted January 15, 2024 Normally would have never gone given the wind forecast - steady at 14-20 gusting 28-33 mph…but the high hit 56 today, the extended forecast is crappy, and I thought I had formulated a game plan based on wind direction to try and continue learning how these Southern lakes and bass behave and react. Was really just hoping for one decent bite given the conditions. Got my first keeper within 15 minutes and felt like I had already done what I wanted, but kept running the pattern and ended up with a limit of bass topped by a 4-0 fish. The last 45 minutes I tried repeating my bite from a couple days before and got the best bite of the day at 5-10. Learned a lot and feel really good about how things are setting up. Last pic of trailer gives you an idea of the water clarity I’m dealing with. This was near the dam and water temps were 44-45.5 most everywhere. Water color only gets worse as you move uplake due to 5.0” of rain the past week. 24 Quote
Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted January 15, 2024 Super User Posted January 15, 2024 Let's go @Team9nine! Awesome stuff, and I learn more in a week during the winter than months in the Spring and Summer.......I just flat out suck in the Fall 😆 This is the most concise and perfect advice I've seen in relation to winter Bassin. Word for word everything is spot on. 16 Quote

Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted January 15, 2024 Global Moderator Posted January 15, 2024 Figured I better fish some before the snow hit. We got 5-6 largemouth, 5-6 bluegill, a crappie and a yellow bass. My buddy caught a LM with a fly he tied casting it up under a dock with an 8 wt. got some snow on the ground now with lots of single digits in the forecast, might have get creative 25 Quote

Super User Team9nine Posted January 15, 2024 Super User Posted January 15, 2024 Took advantage of the nice weather; high 58 and lighter (<10 mph) winds. Back out to the ‘not as muddy as everything else’ reservoir for a few hours. Little bit slower today - just 4 keeper bites, but caught another good one (just a couple shad shy of 4 lbs.). Water 44-46 deg today. Also saw some wild turkeys near the waters edge, and had a nice sunset courtesy of the snowstorms not too far off to our west. 25 Quote
Pat Brown Posted January 15, 2024 Posted January 15, 2024 Red Eye Shad getting it done tonight. I snagged what they were eating on the cast before. Those are TINY bluegill! I'd wager they spawned recently!!!! I mean they can't be that small if they didn't right? Watching Bass try to take the red eye shad away from other bass in the muddy shallows was pretty exciting. I wish I'd caught one of the bigger ones from the school and I wish they were eating better, but it's good to see that they're at least moving up shallow with the intention to eat right now. Maybe the muddy water does have them missing a meal or two in this pond? 21 Quote
RipzLipz Posted January 16, 2024 Posted January 16, 2024 @Pat Brown Probably bluegill from ‘23 spawn - they’ll spawn in waves & multiple times in some lakes if the temps are conducive. Any tilapia in this body of water? 1 Quote
Super User ATA Posted January 16, 2024 Super User Posted January 16, 2024 I was hard headed last three weeks to just throw hinkle trout, Finally this week I did some sane fishing and catch few fishes. 21 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted January 16, 2024 Global Moderator Posted January 16, 2024 The wind chill here hasn't made it above zero since early Friday morning and I don't think it's supposed to Tuesday either. Wednesday is supposed to get above freezing, but then straight back to sub-zero temps. Next week looks better, but looks like they're going to get at least a 3 week break from me bugging them. 1 3 Quote
thediscochef Posted January 16, 2024 Posted January 16, 2024 Right there with ya bud, we had -9 this morning. Finally some sun this afternoon but it'll be next week before I can even hope to fish, just work. I'm thankful for the OT but like. I need a January bass. I'm dyin' here! 2 Quote

Right on that. At least it gives me an opportunity to focus on work. Long range forecast seems to indicate a 180 on this weather. It's still very much El Nino. 1 Quote

Pat Brown Posted January 16, 2024 Posted January 16, 2024 Yeah it's not looking like there's going to be much good fishing between now and next Thursday here either. And it's going to be dumping rain all day Thursday. It's all good though. I mean it's got to be good for the fish to have the hard reset I suppose! It's pretty hard to get out and do my usual routines when my guides completely freeze and I can't see the line. So basically I've been not fishing very much with the weather being the way it is but I do appreciate the opportunities, few or far between as they may be. Hopefully some free time intersects with some hungry fish and a little fishable weather this week. This boy don't do frozen guides though. I fish for fun and when I can't feel bites or cast, that's when I just stay home. 6 Quote

We'll be frozen over any moment. I'll be filling cork handles and U-40ing to feed my jones. It's fishing related anyway. Either way, it's OK. I firmly believe that spring fishing is better served around here by a good winter ice-over. The remaining dead or dying weeds get knocked down completely by the cold instead of lingering endlessly and slowly rotting away causing dead zones where they ordinarily wouldn't be. Spring will be here in the blink of an eye. Scary how time flies. 3 1 Quote

I thought I had broken one of my Lexa 300's last Dec. I had been battling ice all morning, and the level wind quit working altogether. A couple hours thawing out in my bibs pocket remedied it though. 2 Quote
