Bazoo Posted October 6, 2023 Posted October 6, 2023 I've had a lot of success with the Spit'n Image in the past. I haven't had much lately, though the same is said about most things fished on the heavily pressured public lake I attend. I've never fished an actual spook, but I found one earlier this year and got it cleaned up enough to use. I think I tied it on once. I've been intending to give it a fair chance though, but other lures previal. One of the things about the Spit'n Image, is it will go below the surface very slightly and still walk a few feet, then it'll pop out and make a splash and will jump out of the water. 1 Quote

I keep trying them at times I think they should work and get nothing. Fast. Slow. Long pauses. Burning them. Burn + pause. Silent ones, rattly ones, knockers etc. Tie on a squarebill and let it float to the surface and sit there and it gets eaten. I don't get it. I had one blow up on a Berkley Cane walker back in early summer and I had one blow up on a super spook night fishing a year ago. Beyond that, I've never even seen a ripple behind one. I throw them at schooling fish and the schooling stops. I let it get worked back up on the surface and toss a buzzbait in there and it gets crushed. I don't know what it is. I think walking topwaters work better at herring lakes or something. Probably just need to do the ole 'tie on only walking topwaters for a month and see what happens ' game with it. Usually I figure it out when I do that. Your story is my story, Pat. I bet I own a dozen different walking baits. Maybe more. I had a couple muskies blow up on one, but that's it. And I'm throwing walking baits in water chock full of bass that are hitting other surface lures. I don't fish water with herring, so you might be right. 1 Quote
Fishlegs Posted October 6, 2023 Posted October 6, 2023 Yesterday was a frustrating day so I needed to unwind after work. I headed to the bank even though it was sprinkling rain, and I had less than an hour before dark. I really wanted to try out the double fluke rig that roadwarrior used once when we were fishing last fall. Yesterday was my first time to try it, but it will definitely not be the last. I got it rigged up, and made a cast. I had two different colors tied on. White in the front, and baby bass in the back. I learned quickly that it's not the easiest rig to cast. However, on the second cast I hit the spot I was aiming for, and to my surprise I caught the little largemouth in the picture below. It hit the white fluke on the front. I don't know if it was the color or location that made it hit the one it hit, but it's always fun to catch fish on a new technique. I appreciate @roadwarrior introducing the idea, and giving me setup tips. Soon after I caught that one it started raining harder so I got under the boat cover on the dock I was fishing on. I didn't have enough room to cast the double fluke rig under there so I tied on a watermelon senko. On the second cast I got another little largemouth. It was about the same size as the one I caught on the fluke. I hung around in hopes of fishing more, but the rain stayed steady until it was dark. As I waited I tied on a black & blue jig. I knew I needed to make two more casts even if it was dark. After all, the second cast pattern was obvious. I tossed the jig in the water, expecting nothing, but this time the hit came on the first cast. The smallmouth hit the jig as soon as it hit the bottom. I was wet, but I was happy. It was a nice way to end a frustrating day. I started not to post pictures, but dinks have been getting some love lately. I'm also glad it was dark by the time I took the smallmouth picture. Let's just say I am trying to avoid any run-ins with the BR haircut police. ? 18 Quote

Also, they are much more forgiving to walk with an eagle claw size 1 duo lock snap - I prefer that to a split ring because of the sharper edges on the split ring. Plus, the size 1 snap can replace the snap on a chatterbait minimax as needed 2 Quote

Super User Swamp Girl Posted October 7, 2023 Super User Posted October 7, 2023 I'd been watching the weather all week, thinking that Friday would be good, since the wind kicks up today and we're getting 3.5" - 5.5" of rain. So, I fished for three hours and I was right, the impending storm made the bass go all rock-em-sock-em on my lures. I caught 44 in three hours, which is a total I associate with June, not October. I didn't hook or land any of my beloved 19"-plus bass, but I did continue my fall streak of landing pretty much every bass I hooked. I include some pond pics for @Blue Raider Bob! I know I said today was to be my last trip, but I am eyeing next Wednesday, when a south wind + rain could = a big girl! I caught 12 in the little river and 32 in the pond. I looked everywhere for a big gal: deep water, the very backs of bays, heavy weed cover, laydowns, rock, a flat, and so on, but couldn't find one. 24 Quote
1984isNOW Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 @ol'crickety whatcha catchem on? I wish I had more water around me to explore, I only get to fish after the girls go down and there are bo places like that within a reasonable distance. I'm thinking of stopping by a petco with my finesse set up to feel like I'm catchin something Quote

I've downsized my Whopper Ploppers steadily as the water has cooled. If I were you, I'd look for streams like the one in my third pic. Lots of them are overlooked. If the stream empties into a swamp, even better. 2 Quote
einscodek Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 Finally replaced my ole Berkeley spring loaded scale from almost 2 decades back. Had to rezero it all the time and the screen had gotten foggy. Went out this morning to give the new scale a spin but needed some weight for testing. So I asked Mr fishes could I borrow you guys for just alil while. Got a couple of volunteers ooo ooo me me. Biggest one wanted a weigh and well how could I refuse her? Yep it werks! But she ripped my glove and gave me terrible bass thumb. Bad girl! 22 Quote

Aaron_H Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 Got into a better fish this morning. Buddy of mine I haven't seen in a while wanted to get together for a bit of morning fishing, and I couldn't say no to that! Had a short window, and got out later than I'd like for a morning bite, but second fish came in at 7lb 2oz so I'd say it was the right window at least. Got her on a wacky rigged white senko, pitched just over a grass ledge and she picked it up right after it hit bottom. Definitely got my adrenaline going and has me excited for the fall transition. 23 Quote

Woody B Posted October 7, 2023 Posted October 7, 2023 After thinking about all the comments in the "Alabama Bass" thread I decided to "try" and target Largemouth. I caught 8, 7 Largemouth and 1 small spot. The Largemouth were all between 15 and 17 inches. They were on points up creek channels. All but 1 were on a Shakey Head with a Bizz Baits "Dizzy Diamond" worm. (Historically I've been a Zoom worm user but Pat Brown pointed out that Bizz Baits is in NC so I got some of them) The other was on a bladed jig. I lost a couple good sized Spots. Spots mess me up. They (at least for me) like to chew on a worm for a bit before "taking" it. With Largemouth I have to be ready, with a quick hookset or they'll spit it out. The 2 spots I lost were barely hooked in the very edge of the lip. After my latest rash of broken rods no more boat flips for me. Both were boatside waiting to be netted when they came loose. The hook would have probably torn out when attempting a boat flip anyway. Pictures are boat launch at 6:45, first bass at 6:59 and last bass on last cast at 9:53. Regarding walking baits. With most topwater baits I miss a bunch of fish. I "believe" I have a tendency to pull the bait out of their mouth on a hookset. I have good topwater luck with a Devils Horse. I fish it with some slack in the line. I believe that slows down my too quick hookset. 17 Quote

That’s the answer right there. If throwing a frog, wait till you feel them pulling on the frog. Feel, not sight. Of course otherwise you can just be me for the past two years and throw a topwater and not feel anything until you throw something that isn’t a topwater, lol. I self admit I spend too much time throwing spinnerbait, t-rig, and jig @Aaron_H Slaunch donkey 1 1 Quote
