I mentioned that I'm taking a boy fishing tomorrow and I can't believe how excited I am. He's super excited too. I was a teacher for 40 years, so I know how to teach kids, but I've never taught fishing, so I've been thinking about ways to build skills while having fun. We've going to start at four in the morning with trolling. I'll put in the bow and have him troll off one side while I troll off the other. I'll paddle so he can focus on the fishing. When I hook a bass, I'll pass him my rod. This will give him double the opportunities to play fish.

Then we'll move to casting. Nothing is easier than a Whopper Plopper, so I'll start him on that and then move him to a Mepps, wacky worm, and paddletail.

Then we'll move to froggin', both for fun and because it's so hard...at least for me. I'll post pics of the lad with his bass tomorrow. I'm hoping for 30, which is doable because we're going to a numbers pond.

??Goodluck

No biggins tonight but I got to watch this little thing just destroy a Z craw right in front of me. Either smallmouth or meanmouth, hard to tell. I'm always feeling good about catching black bass that are less common. Gonna take a break for the weekend, maybe brave the holiday, but gonna be gone for a week after that. Hopefully the bass forget about me ?

Thanks for letting me slide on the crooked hat and unshaven face officer. I'll try not to let it happen again. ?

My #3 all time. 6# on the nose. December of 21, suspended in a deep pine tree top. Water and air were both about 40 degrees that day.

It was a slow evening wading the river yesterday. Only got three bites: two dink smallies and one tiny rock bass. Smallmouth numero uno tried not to cooperate and flopped into the mud, so his yearbook picture isn't the best. He'll have to live with that knowledge for the rest of his life:

I didn't photograph the rock bass, because I didn't want to risk fumbling my phone out of my backpack while standing in 3 feet of water.

The second smallmouth was much more cooperative than his earlier counterpart. He gave a lively tussle for such a little guy, and tired himself out:

20230630-210355.jpg

I had to have words with him about eating more than he can actually fit in his stomach, though. The glutton already had a big old crawdad in his gullet:

That was it for my evening. At least the river is back up to normal levels after several days of rain. Now if we can only get Canada to stop sending us smoke signals. It's 2023 for crying out loud!

I take my little siblings fishing fairly often. Nothing is more rewarding for me then introducing the kiddos to something I love. The joy/wonder/panic when they hook a biggun, or even the simple delight of pulling in panfish, can't be beat. I have more fun when someone I bring fishing catches a fish than when I catch my own.

I hope you have a blast. We need pictures and updates!

Sharing the love, @ol'crickety! Thanks for doing that

I count 14 fish for that young man. I'm sure it'll be a day to remember for him.

And agree with what you are saying... I am mostly self-taught and I definitely struggled to catch that many bass when I was starting out. Heck, I haven't caught that many for a while. Last times were in NY fishing small ponds

I just decided I'm going to do it. Will wear PFD and keep it safe. I know navigation on the lake well.

He actually caught 35. I just uploaded the bigger bass. Yep, I was lucky to catch three 14" bass as a kid. I'd strap one rod to my bike and a few lures and wade farm ponds. I remember catching 21 bass one evening and that was my greatest session ever, but none were three and four-pounders like this young fisherman caught this morning.

I had a great time too. He really wanted to learn and because of his focus, he learned fast. I'm taking him to a numbers pond next where we'll have a chance at a hundred total.

Thanks, Alex. He was sooooooooooooooo happy. Me too. I enjoyed the morning as much as catching the bass myself.

His grandparents asked why we were launching the dark. The proof is in the pics.

That's so wonderful!!! That grin says it all! Thanks for taking the time to invest in the next generation, Katie. He'll remember that trip for the rest of his life.

Gorgeous morning on the water. Fishing was no good though. This future hawg got things started right off the bat by putting a PopX treble into my hand:3DEF83FA-E17F-4DD0-A7E9-7FC6D2B5AB8F.thumb.jpeg.36821c1aaca31c430f9c5a925e4cf0be.jpeg

Luckily it didn’t take too much to get the hook out of my hand. Only a few more small fish landed today, all on the PopX.

The pleasure-goers swarmed the lake by 11:00, and I got the heck out of there.

Second time in the last few weeks that fish didn’t hit anything subsurface. My mountain lake hasn’t been fishing as well as I’ve become accustomed to. I’ve been so focused on my main 2023 goal of beating my LM PB, and getting a 7lb class fish and I believe this lake gives me the best odds, based on how well I know it and the sizable fish I pull from here. It’s my current domestic PB holder. Hasn’t been a total dud, but not what I’m used to from this lake.

Great job taking the kid fishing.   All of you are smashing bass.  Kid catches 35.  I should probably be ashamed of my measly 10 today.  I had fun, so that's what I'm after.  First and last bass are pictured.  First was just before 6am.  Last was around 10.   I got "catfished".  Probably a 5 pound Blue.   I took a picture of it next to the boat, then took my pliers and got it loose.  I didn't want the slime in my boat.   Most of the Bass were on a Devils Horse.  There's still some mayfly action.  I've got an OG6 with a broken bill tied on one rod.  I cast it into overhanging trees and shake to dislodge mayflies.  Then I'll cast something under the tree.   I finally caught something else on my Shimano Armajoint.   The bluegill pictured.   I think all of y'all are punking me on the Armajoint.  Y'all are posting fish pictures and stuff, then laughing, saying "Woody is actually fishing with one of those"   LOL

Edit:  I had long hair most of my life.  I'll have to dig up a picture.

THE STREAK GOES ON!!!!! and the streak goesssss onnnnn!

Well, was a great day at Headwaters. We got about 20-25 fish total. Biggest 3 was 5lbs 14oz, 3lbs 7oz and 3lbs 1oz. A bunch of 2-2.5 as well. Even got a 4.5lbs Tilapia.

However, the best part of the trip was getting to snap a pic of myself and Roland Martin at the spillway. I have watched his shows on tv when I was a kid. I learned a lot from him back in the day. Was amazing getting to fish next to him and his son Scott. Both of them were really nice, even though I felt awful bothering him. I caught him while he was tying up a new bait.

Was an amazing day. That lake is beautiful, can't wait to go back.
