He's been excited to try it out so we had to take advantage of an almost 60 degree and calm afternoon. I only took 2 rods and the baits on them and he had 1 rod with 1 bait. I just got done fishing a little cut when he snuck in behind me and plucked the first fish of the trip out on his Ned rig. Thankfully I caught 2 right as the end to save face because I was taking some serious ribbing.  Fantastic Dad!  Being a hammer at that age might afford him the opportunity to pay for college, or even be a pro one day.    Impressive young man.....hope to see him hold a Classic trophy up in 15-20 years ? 1 Quote

Woody B Posted March 5, 2023 Posted March 5, 2023 I got out Saturday for a little while. There were 3 (that I know of) tournaments going on as well as a catfish tournament. I decided to go way up the lake and stay out of their way. I caught 4, all were 16 to 17 inches long.  I looked at some waypoint distances while I was up there. I was fishing closer to the landing I use on Lake Norman than the 1 I used to launch my boat.  I've wondered about the elevation change on a big lake. The lake level has been consistent. According to my phones GPS the elevation at the top of the lake (at the bottom of the Mountain Island dam) the elevation is 590 feet. Thursday, all the way at the other end of the lake, at the Lake Wylie dam the elevation was 570 feet.  This is 22 miles if measured in a straight line. There has to be fall for the water to flow. I guess 1 foot per mile is believable.  14 Quote

That’s the way our lakes are too, different elevation at the upper and lower end. Quote

Caught my first Guadalupe Bass today, a super neat experience. Was snaking a c-rigged 8" power lizard over a log and felt it latch on. Little guy inhaled it. Some tough fishing today but a bucket list item crossed off in cool fashion. Thats cool. 1 Quote
Jmurphy87 Posted March 5, 2023 Posted March 5, 2023 First bass of the year for me, not huge but not a dink either. Good way to break the new rod in. Bait was a z man mini max 3/8 in bluegill with a mini zako 956 trailer. New rod is a 6’10 medium heavy expride b, used my old curado 200k in 6.2 ratio. Cast it effortlessly with no issues, didn’t bring the scale but probably 2.5lbs is my guess lol. The weather was to nice to stay inside. 22 Quote

Awesome, and I really love that MiniMax combo.  Such an excellent bait.  I have the bluegill MiniMax but not those mini Zakos, perfect little combo.  Bet you catch a bunch more on it.  1 Quote

Yeah it’s my normal color combo when I go to imitate gills, I really wish that they would make a sungill version also. I think that it will work well with the red mini max also. I like it so far, probably catch my fair share on it this year is my guess also. 2 Quote

Woody B Posted March 6, 2023 Posted March 6, 2023 Caught 7 today including a couple 4 pounders. 4.01 Spot, and 4.15 Largemouth. (.01 and .15 hundredths, not ounces)  The 4.15 LM came on a Devils Horse in 2 feet of water.  4 on a crank, and 2 on a t-rig.  The lake was busy. Some people fishing but a BUNCH of people riding around. I saw a couple people wake boarding but most of the wake boats were just riding around making waves.   21 Quote

Super User Team9nine Posted March 6, 2023 Super User Posted March 6, 2023 Long list of things to do today, but I couldn't not take a rod with and stop at a pond before starting my run. Highs here hit 72 degrees with a SW wind at 20 mph, gusting to 30. Just headed for the windiest corner and threw a jerkbait - and they were there. A dozen bites in about an hour of fishing, and then I was off. Â Â Â Â 18 Quote
Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted March 6, 2023 Super User Posted March 6, 2023 These are Bass beds correct?  Caught about 20 sub 2lb fish earlier, all on the flashback mini.  I can find bait of all sizes, I can find small fish to catch every day out, I simply can't consistently or even really at all catch 3lb+ fish.  Still lots of fun to catch small fiesty Spotted Bass on a spinning reel, way better than doing the chores and grown up stuff I need to do ?  17 Quote
Super User Bird Posted March 7, 2023 Super User Posted March 7, 2023 Almost skunked today. Windy, bluebird skies, water temp 46* and managed 1 fish on a Jerkbait. 16 Quote

Water temp 56 What a pretty fish, zero sympthy to you though for being foolish enough to throw a fidget spinner ?  It's the "rosettes" on SMs, and especially Spots that I love.  The top half has an almost snake like patterning. So cool.  Some SMs don't have as pronounced ones, but I imagine they come back in a livewell. 3 Quote

They are way to territorial for that. In my pond, they will be no closer than 20' minimum, and in most cases no closer that 30 to 40'. Once again this is my experience in my particular pond. My water temps reached 65 yesterday and the bass were checking out the shallows but were not preparing nests. 3 1 Quote
keagbassr Posted March 7, 2023 Posted March 7, 2023 Had about an hour to kill after after hitting the bank and post office. only 1 bite on my 2nd cast but it was worth it. 5-6 on a jerkbait. 17 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted March 7, 2023 Global Moderator Posted March 7, 2023 Went to lake in search of big trout eaters on opening weekend for trout season. Didn't find any big ones but lots of nice quality fish. Stony found one of the monster trout, a 6.38 pounder on a KVD 1.5. No idea how many fish we caught but it was pretty nonstop action all day for bass and trout. Â 17 Quote
Fishlegs Posted March 7, 2023 Posted March 7, 2023 Went to the river on my lunch break today since it was such a gorgeous day. Didn't have any luck for the majority of the time I was there. White bass were jumping everywhere, but I couldn't even get one of those to bite. When I was just about to go back to work I spotted a jumping school of white bass. I decided to throw my fat albert grub right in the middle of them one more time, let it fall through, and call it a day. This fat smallie is what came back on the cast. Turned it into a mighty good trip.  14 Quote
