That one has little bronzing, and you could be fooled at first if you didn't look for the lateral line. I've been watching the MLF tourney on the St. Lawrence River today, and the ones they are pulling up are super bronze and have pronounced tiger striping. I used to think it was largely based on temp, but now I really have no idea what causes smallmouths to look so differently from place to place. LGMs have some of this as well...some have pronounced lateral lines, some are much greener, some have whiter bellies, etc. Alabama Bass and Spots seem to look much more uniform from location to location. I've always found river Bass to be much more exciting, and hard fighting fish. ETA: Peak irony a spinnerbait man is wearing a zoom shirt, and a non spinnerbait man was wearing a zorro shirt 2 Quote

So I guess in my neck of the woods, this is what they look like. I agree, it’s fascinating how much the coloration can differ and seeing photos of smallies that people catch around the country on here makes it easy to see the differences. I am still a newbie to both smallmouth and river fishing, but definitely seems like the fight of these fish is incredible compared to a lake/pond largie. 1 Quote
Woody B Posted August 20, 2022 Posted August 20, 2022 7 largemouth and 5 spots today. I think I caught this one twice. I didn't take a picture the first time. Both were 16 1/2 inches and colored exactly like this one. 1st one on a crankbait. Released it, took a leak, then caught this one on a Devils Horse. That's 2 weeks that I think I've caught the same fish back to back. (the one last week was a dink) 13 Quote

Spots love that riprap in the background Quote

I just saw this. Think you added it? I thought the same thing when I posted it. @TnRiver46 loves zoom worms and I am a fan of them too. Super User BrianMDTX Posted August 20, 2022 Super User Posted August 20, 2022 It rained! Sweet Mother of God, it actually rained yesterday! Heavy downpours (rained again this afternoon, too!). Which meant I had to check out the pond this morning. It is still lower than normal, but yesterday’s gullywasher filled up 3/4 of what it was down (filled up now lol), and that’s a good thing. Caught 6. I dropped one as I was grabbing the phone and he fell in and swam off. First one on a black/silver floating Rapala, three on a Zoom Trick and two on a black Senko. All caught as baits were worked through or near submerged vegetation. None were big but they were scrappers! 20 Quote
IcatchDinks Posted August 20, 2022 Posted August 20, 2022 Was able to get out today. Been pretty absent. Haven't had a lot of time for fishing. Caught a 13 inch and a 14 inch smallie. (I'm guessing on size. Didn't bother to measure them.) Plus a handful of dinks. Unless you count the pike and carp, they're aren't a lot of giant fish near me. But smallies fight like fish twice their size. Plus a couple weeks ago I caught this largie in a little pond. For the size pond, this guy is a beast. He was only 15 inches but weight a full 2lbs : 18 Quote

All my regular spots are pretty low too. Everytime it rains, I get really excited. Glad to hear you got some water. Also, nice catches! Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted August 21, 2022 Super User Posted August 21, 2022 Never want to see smoke in the sky around here this time of year... Dink of dinks but it always amazes me how aggressive small SM and spots can be. First cover scat fish on a free rig. I was pleasantly surprised how many bites this drew. 15 Quote
Super User Swamp Girl Posted August 21, 2022 Super User Posted August 21, 2022 I went fishing last night and this morning. Caught 19 bass last night and 8 bass this morning, plus a bullhead on a Whopper Plopper. Thanks to all the guys who coached me on fishing frogs. I fished some serious salad. I also caught some nice fish. I like the third one best. Right before it hit my frog, I'm pretty sure it said, Puny frog. Bass smash!" I also caught a bullhead on a Whopper Plopper! P.S. - I catch short fish too, but even they're fat. Here's one: 12 Quote

It would replace tubes for me but not sure if it’s worth going down that rabbit hole Quote

I stopped fishing after catching the fish photo'd because I felt a pinching sensation in my back that concerned me. Feels much better this A.M but I want to take next couple days off regardless and then try again for short spurts bank fishing. I said "back" but really my trouble is something surrounding my shoulder blade. The pain is centered on my back though, underneath my scapula and sometimes radiating in other directions. Seen doctors and started PT; I'll be fine. Thanks for asking man Quote
Super User Swamp Girl Posted August 21, 2022 Super User Posted August 21, 2022 You made me laugh, SpotHunter! I wasn't quite night fishin'. Just very early mornin' fishin'! There was a little light. Thanks for the encouragement. It's greatly appreciated. 1 Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted August 21, 2022 Super User Posted August 21, 2022 Dropshot from the bank isn't a fluke. Another good afternoon on the water, but going to tweak my setup just a bit as I had another good fish that I really couldn't do anything with before he got a chance to wrap me on something and finally pull off. Kinda' comes with the territory when bank fishing though, especially with 6 lb. test - lol. 17 Quote
