Not much fishing last year, and a late start this year. But today was good. First bass in 10 long months.

Bass opened up yesterday in Zone 18 Ontario.  Conditions were cool and very windy, so the canoe stayed dry and we just shore fished a bit yesterday with very little luck. We went on a family Father’s Day picnic this afternoon and fished a windward point.  Zero luck on plastic worms and drop shot, so I decided I might as well fish in a way I really enjoy and out came the Heddon One Knocker Spook.  4th cast way out there (I love the way a spook casts!) and I got an almost immediate swat from what I thought was a small one.  I kept on trucking and about 4 twitches later she sucked it under.  As soon as the rod loaded up, I knew it wasn’t small.  No scale, but she was 21” - a bit thin after spawning, but I’ve estimated 4.5# which would be my new PB.

Caught this long, skinny fish on a june bug swimming fluke, on the fall. Fish aren’t biting moving baits AT ALL here lately.

It's been a really tough week, one of my oldest and closest friends passed away suddenly on Wednesday. So I fish, like I always do. Managed a 5.2, 3.5, a couple 1-2, and a couple tiny 6-8" fish including a smallmouth. Hands are all bit and cut up from hooks and bass lips. That 3.5 was maybe the angriest bass I can remember catching in a while. The 5.2 was extremely well behaved by contrast.

We stayed down at the lake this weekend. I didn’t get to do a ton of fishing but I did have some success.

my buddy came down Friday night after work and we fished til dark, maybe got 1.5 or so hours in. Caught only dinks, lost a couple hits. Baby flathead on a shakey head…………

then my wife calls and says did y’all not see the deer? Apparently we walked right by a fawn to get down from the house to the boat

Saturday morning we fished til breakfast, couple more dinks. Then we had some more friends come down for a day of swimming and boating. My wife wanted to drive the boat all over and look at the mountains. We did make an interesting find………

so Sunday morning, I fish for a while with no luck. After breakfast Rachel wants to go on the boat for a bit and I start trying to catch gar. The first one I hook is pretty big and the battle is on. She captured the event on video, but we forgot to take pics so it’s all just screen shots from the video. The fish was 46” and put on quite the aerial display. The 40 lb seaguar smack down wrapped around his snout a hundred different ways and it didn’t shred, it took me a while to cut him all loose

Got served some humble pie last night.  Wanted to try some stuff besides what's been working for me this year so I started off with the frog.  No dice.  Threw a swim jig around.  Nothing doing on that either.  So got the drop shot out and caught one.  Had a couple short strikes but the evening was looking bleak.  Switched back to the frog and was working the edge.  Of course I had a good blow up right as I paused to itch my face.  Clumsily tried to set the hook while the rod came out of my hand and I missed the fish.  Continued with the frog with no other luck.  Had a hard runner on the drop shot but it must not have ever had the hook.  Hour in and only half an hour of light left.  I figured I should try the wacky rig which I haven't thrown in a while.  Got 2 pretty quick but they were just little ones.  Made a frustrated chuck to the middle of the pond and was waiting for it to sink.  Reeled up my line and there wasn't a tick, wasn't movement, but it just seemed tense.  Made a weird hookset because I wasn't sure what was going on and didn't expect anything because of how the night had gone and felt a pull like I'd never felt before.  I had the rod bowed over hard, 6# line so I'm just trying to keep it tight and let the fish work.  She's running to my left and peeling drag.  2 or 3 seconds in and the fish makes a hard turn to head straight away from me to the center of the pond and the reel is just screaming.  Half a second after that she's gone.  My hook and senko came back to me.  I didn't snap off, hook wasn't bent out, worm was passed over the hook an additional time, and I'm wanting to snap a rod in disbelief of what happened.  My guess is I basically hit the fish when I cast and it picked it up right after impact on the water.  My only mistake was my half-a$$ed hookset and I guess when the fish redirected whatever bit of skin I had was able to come free.  There are no catfish in this pond that I'm aware of; there are snappers, which I've never caught so I don't know how they feel when you hook one.  I didn't get a single look at whatever it was and I guess part of me is hoping it was a snapper to avoid the heartbreak lol but I'll never know.  If it was a bass it was an absolute giant that would have destroyed my PB, I'm sure of that.  So I fished the senko a bit more with no luck and decided to break out the dark sleeper which I haven't fished in a while either.  First cast and 3 or 4 pounder crushed it.  I've got it 3/4 of the way back to me, it jumps and spits the lure.  I'm boiling.  Cast again and a dink hits it, that one comes off too.  At this point, all I can do is laugh.  That seemed to help as the next 2 casts resulted in fish which means the dark sleeper got hit on 4 consecutive casts.  So I ended the night on a positive note but man I hope I don't have a night like that again for a while.

image.thumb.jpeg.1277250858a2129df139f30d849beed1.jpeg

Went out Friday night looking for a little bit of redemption.  Figured I'd start out with what was working for me on Wednesday and go from there.  First cast was a fish.  First 5 mins were 3 fish and they were all decent.

image.thumb.jpeg.3ed2786b9a3bbae9b288c5b378ed0c91.jpeg

Worked my way around the pond catching 8 or 9 fish on the dark sleeper before the bite cooled off.  After that I switched to the wacky worm.  Had one fish steal my senko twice before I stuck him with the 3rd one.  That felt good.  Caught a couple more after him.

image.thumb.jpeg.72c3cd03b3f037ed765539be8dbcc22f.jpeg

With a gigantic improvement from the last outing and no lost fish I was feeling good and figured I'd cut my outing a little short and get home to the wife.  Just one more cast.

image.thumb.jpeg.1170e15d4e00f72cbb2954c66017d444.jpeg

Love it when that happens.  Mid 2 pounder to end the evening.

Went out with the family on Father's Day from 10a-12p (Happy Father's Day everyone!).  Terrible fishing conditions but a beautiful day.  Bad water visibility, bright blue skies, no clouds, 20 degree drop in temps, and windy out of the N.  Started out with the dark sleeper.. no luck.

image.jpeg.79dfb9ef903246629fb1b7441d22b36c.jpeg

Switched to the drop shot and caught a small one.  Tried to catch some bluegills with my kids but even they seemed to be moved out and hiding.

Worked the pond a little while my kids ate and caught a slightly bigger bass on the drop shot again.  Then caught a solid 2 pounder but the kids were more interested in cows by then lol.

image.thumb.jpeg.1d00df1cd7e38e06bda17c288fe977c3.jpeg

Bites stopped and I tried a small swimbait with no luck.  Tried to get some top water action; no luck.  Tried a spinnerbait and got one to slam it on the pause.

That was it for the day.  Happy to catch any whenever I have my kids with me and get them some exposure to fishing.

Photos from Father’s Day family pond fishing excursion. LrgmouthShad Sr. actually caught the most fish in the morning; I forgot to photo one. You can see him in his photo trying to invent a new fish hold.

This past week MotherShad joined me kayak fishing. She caught several and been catching on quick! One bass you can see was a little camera shy and was desperate to flop away.

Lastly, the following day I went fishing with The Shaky Head Wizard who I talked about in another report thread. I asked if he wanted his 5.29lb bass to be posted on here and he declined, so The Shaky Head Wizard remains anonymous. Our adventures are not over….

I’ve got plenty photos of smaller fish but don’t care to post them. Been a whole lotta learning for me and not a lot of big fish catching.

Nice longnose! They're a ton of fun when they actually stay hooked, which is tough given how frickin boney and leathery the snout can be. They put on a show, too

Fished a local public reservoir for the first time today and got on a pretty nice frog bite late afternoon after the clouds rolled in. They started MUNCHING through a Coontail mat I’d spotted earlier in the day. Needless to say I’m glad I made the decision to try a new spot. It was a grind, but I was rewarded with this 4lb 8oz beauty! Runner up was 3lb 7oz. Man I love frog fishing.

Went on a family vacation to Table Rock this past week and did a fair amount of fishing in between the family activities. The bite was pretty tough for me the first few days with a dropshot being the most consistent bite producer. The threadfin shad were spawning under the resort dock, looked like it was raining each morning with splashes from fish chasing them, but I never could figure out how to make those fish bite. My first fish the first morning was a nice smallmouth on a little 3" swimbait.

288569233-10221282462797365-166418644367

Followed soon by a healthy largemouth on a Berkley jointed Surge Shad.

288555243-10221282467917493-632531653265

I bounced around and never got anything real productive except going to the highway 86 bridge and fishing a dropshot on the bridge. It wasn't fast fishing, but it was always productive.

288806159-10221286599940791-471925111938288805283-10221282477357729-270285740100

Catching them out of real shallow water

288517421-10221282484677912-544927461019

The resort dock had a bunch of big bluegills under it every time I walked down to the dock. So I went to the front desk and bought a tub of nightcrawlers and took Lake and my dad out one afternoon. We went through that whole tub of crawlers pretty fast and had a good time doing it.

288999677-10221288684752910-640328617868288915695-10221286600660809-820073421345

After awhile we took the boat out and went swimming, then down to the bridge and surrounding area to fish. Dad and I had a double for the record books. I promise my fish wasn't as big as it looks in the picture, just the perspective of my son being down lower in the boat making it look bigger ?

288860799-10221288685232922-157993418569

Then Lake got scoreboard on both of us with a nice largemouth on a dropshot Spro Pintail Minnow to close out the night.

288935085-10221288685592931-535979482235

The final day, my bridge didn't produce and I was bored fishing it. I had 1 little spot on a topwater and was spinning my wheels. Decided if I wasn't going to catch anything, I was going to have a good reason for it. So I got out my swimbait rod and put on a KGB Chad Shad. Second cast, I had 2 nice spotted bass fighting over the bait the whole way back. 3rd cast a nice largemouth barely missed it, 4th cast I boated a largemouth over 18". It was like all the sudden there was fish in the lake. I had so much fun that last day, missing a ton of fish and catching a fair amount, just wished I'd have tried it sooner.

Boat was finally ready.  Had to replace both switches boxes on the motor.  I was only running on 3 of 6 cylinders. It runs way better now.  Gained 3 mph

First fish is a smallie from crystal lake in benzie county.  Caught it on a maxx scent Gp tube. Also, caught a bunch of 10–11 inch rock bass  rock bass.  I saw one 20ish inch fish zooming around.  Wouldn’t bite however.

rest of the fish are from little plate lake.  I finally caught a fish on a rod I built.  That was pretty cool. I was punching pads and bite one of my jigs that I pour.

Rest of the fish came on a 1.5 kvd square bill. Biggest came on a strike king summer craw stick bait

Went out last night and made myself leave the light/finesse gear at home this time.  I knew it'd be tough but figured I'd shoot for some bigger fish.  Spinnerbait got a hit on the fall after unsnagging it from a tree.  It was a tiny one and got off.  S-Waver got no action.  Frog had one blow up but the fish missed it.  10" powerworm had a great bite that I broke off on on the hookset, then had another 3-4# fish that spit me on the jump.  That was tough.  Got a few more tugs on that but everything was short of the hook.  Caved a little and put the trusty KVD square bill on with light fading.  Finally had a solid strike and landed this 2 pounder just before 9.  Took a few more tosses with that and then called it an evening.

Got out Sunday with @HaydenS for a morning trip to a local lake. Good numbers but nothing overly big. He had one of the better fish of the morning on a Spro rat 40.

Caught an okay limit of bass this AM at Badin. One in the morning on a spinnerbait that was alright, and then 4 on a jig, 3 15”ers and a 16.5”. Nice to see the jig bite is on; that might wind up being too much fun ?

I finally made it out again by the 4th day of this cold front. Overnight temps in the high 50s to low 60s have chilled the shallows and the shoreline is oddly devoid of baitfish and gills once again. There was some action way offshore though, so I tried a bunch of stuff to mimic baitfish up top, but bombing out a caffeine shad to the second weed line was the only thing that got any play. I either caught this mini 10 times, or they were his clones, but that was as good as it got. A dink-athon beats a skunk-athon, so I'll take it.

Took the kayak out today and over did it, stayed out in it for 5 hrs. The high temp today in TN was 100* which was the first time in 10 years. The heat really kicked my butt, the fishing was tough too. I only caught this 11" and a 9".

Had an hour before work this morning, decided to get out and toss a big crawler around a bit. I was just hoping for 1 bite, but ended up catching 3. Nothing big but they're always vicious strikes, which is fun.

Fished today about 7-12.  Slow day only boated 5, 1 on a buzzbait, 1 on a toad, 1 on a frog that weighed 3-3 and 2 on a... 10" plastic worm? Wow thats weird?. anyway 1 of those was big fish of the day at 5-12. ( 3-3pic exceeds size total)?
