Super User LrgmouthShad Posted May 10, 2022 Super User Posted May 10, 2022 I ain't done yet! Me and the kayak made a rare appearance on the water on a weekday. Today was a rollercoaster of emotions for me. Day started off rough, but I was still in high spirits, because, well, I was going to fish today. Then I get to the pond and the wind gusts were ridiculuous and often sustained. For a while I was just trying my best to stay on target. And also for quite a while I was only only catching small bass on a swim jig. But I was convinced that the swim jig was my best option today and my best shot at catching a big one, so I stuck with it. Later as the wind started to settle down and I get my wits about me, I catch a decent bass in a wind-protected area near some rock. In my head I'm thinking, "Duh!". So I start looking around for more similar targets. Now, there is a bank I hardly touch on this pond because I don't think I'd ever caught anything on it up until today. But on this particular day, it just looked right. Little rocky bank, out of a Northern wind, and in close proximity to deep water and the dam. It looked like a decent place for bass to stage for the spawn too or do their actual spawning. I make a dozen casts or so there, and I see an absolutely huge swirl soon after my jig hits water. In my head, I'm telling myself "Don't panic, wait until you feel pressure." I timed the hookset perfectly. Then the fish makes a flop and I see how big it is. I'm fishing in heavy cover, just a bunch of lily pads, not all of them alive. I've got a big fish in heavy cover, so I start pulling with all my might on this fish. Surprisingly, it was enough. Get her alongside me and I scoop her up. I'm shaking. Get a quick pic and... my scale is dead :(. But I believe this one was very close to my NY PB. Around 20.5" with really big girth. I calm myself down and then just keep fishing, and then catch a few more decent ones on the same bank. Really amazing day. I just had to stick with it. I'll be back for more soon! Also, my facial expression are priceless in this one; I have no idea why. I was keyed up the whole day. Energy on high. 24 Quote
Run2jeepn Posted May 10, 2022 Posted May 10, 2022 Hit my family pond for an hour. Good pond for a nice confident boost. Biggest 4.7 Smallest 3.5lbs. Caught 5 in all. Lost a few good ones too. 22 Quote

Only one in a few hours but I had my kids with me and didn’t switch presentations as much as I wanted Met up with this guy again. Last night on the drop shot. Caught a handful the same way but nothing for size. Switched over to the crank and started getting better bites. Lost the best at the bank cause I got cute with lifting him out of the water because the hunter in me was trying not to spook the deer making their way to the pond. But hey I've got their favorite path of travel now. Caught a couple more before the deer in the background got wise to me. Lost 2 more on the crank at the bank. Final totals, caught 7, lost 3. Best numbers night this year but unimpressive size overall. 17 Quote

Super User NYWayfarer Posted May 10, 2022 Super User Posted May 10, 2022 Quarantine is over for me and not a minute too soon. My symptoms were mild and luckily the rest of my family didn’t catch it. The pond Bass are finally on beds. Caught the smaller of the two Bass I saw on a finesse Jerkbait. First decent Largemouth of the year for me. 19 1 Quote
Mbirdsley Posted May 11, 2022 Posted May 11, 2022 Left lee street about 1:30 and headed up the Shiawassee into the flats. Had a pretty good day. Caught around 5 large mouths, 1 pike, big dog fish, white bass, of course a sheap head, and I lost somthing really big. I don’t know if it was a big dog fish or a flat head. It was taking line but, never got a look at it. I left around 7 O clock. Most fish came on a kvd sexy shad square bill or a black and bronze war eagle spinner bait I kept the pike and fillet him out as he choked my square bill and I’m not dumb enough to put my hand in its mouth. Pike was 24.5inches. How you know it’s a good one. I’m pretty sure first time I’ve used it and it caught fish 21 Quote
softwateronly Posted May 11, 2022 Posted May 11, 2022 Work went away for me last week, so I was able to get out and spend hours in the cold and rain for fish instead. Lots and lots of fish, not many big girls, but loads of decent bass, and accidental pike, crappie, sunfish, and warmouth. Most were jig fish, lots of jerkbait fish, couple handfuls of spinnerbait and swim jig fish, with some big baits and popper action too. I also ran into a nighttime feeding frenzy, 5-6 fish in 15mins at 2 different times on the same large windblown flat, forgot how much cloudy half moon heightens the feeling. scott 22 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted May 11, 2022 Global Moderator Posted May 11, 2022 Had my second kayak tournament of the year this past weekend at Perry Lake in Kansas. Friday I prefished and found some decent fish but the only bigger fish I found were 2 random smallmouth I didn't have any confidence in finding again the next day. Lots of 12-14 inch largemouth on a squarebill or split-shot rig so I at least was catching fish. My fishing buddy from Friday. Saturday the weather was completely different with strong wind and sun. Friday I'd been getting very steady bites, Saturday they were very few and far between. I started where I caught the 2 nice smallmouth and managed 1 dink smallmouth of 12.5" and a 14" largemouth in 3 hours before I pulled the plugh and went to my crankbait spot. I had hoped the lack of shoreline access and brush would keep the crappie fishermen away but no luck there. I was cut off within a short pitch, over and over again, very frustrating. Thankfully I caught a nice 15" fish one of my first cast. I felt better needing only 2 more bites to get a limit. I was almost all the way to the end of the bank before I finally got another bite almost at the end of the bank from another small largemouth. I fished back up the bank, afraid I may not get a limit for the second tournament in a row with less than 2 hours left. I was nearing the end of the bank trying to decide what to do when I finally got number 5. A few cast later, I got a small cull. I decided to pedal into the wind and get to the marina and hope for a big bite in the last 45 minutes. Using a split shot rigged mid-sided Rage Bug, I caught 7 fish and culled 4 times in 30 minutes, enough to finish in 5th out of 49 anglers. I was happy with my finish on a day only 13 anglers caught limits, I was 1 big bite away from being right there. This morning I had 15 minutes after dropping my son off at school and before work. Had this chunk inhale a black and blue bladed jig. 20 Quote

Jmurphy87 Posted May 11, 2022 Posted May 11, 2022 Nothing special but still a fish lol, 2 bass 1.82lbs each. The size is smaller this year in a pond I fish unfortunately ?. Then I caught 2 small pike also, 1 on a frog and 1 on a Ned rig. Both of the bass were caught on a Ned rig. Sorry I only have one picture of the pike. My phone is still acting funny from last Sunday when water got in my waders with my phone in my pocket. 20 Quote
Jmilburn76 Posted May 11, 2022 Posted May 11, 2022 I was able to take the kayak out for a few hours this morning. The bite was tough, there was several large carp in the area grouped up like they were about to spawn.I managed the one pictured and a even smaller 11"er, both on a wacky rigged worm. I missed 3 and seen a few large ones that wasn't interested in anything I was tossing. Even though Im done with all the therapy after my injury I think being outside, especially on my kayak, is the best therapy of all. Im happy to still be alive! Nature will show you her beauty if you let her, like these honeysuckles growing out over the water. I spent 20 minutes watching two families of geese with 9 babies between them, the parents were teaching the babies how to forage for food dunking underwater. It was a great day! 19 Quote
Super User Bird Posted May 11, 2022 Super User Posted May 11, 2022 Got up at 4:21 am, yes that was the exact time. Lol We drove 2 hours to Lake Anna but had to cut out trip short as my ole fishing partner got sick on me. Lots of Bass guarding fry this morning so I like to avoid that if I can see it. Bluebird skies, windy and water temp 65*. Caught all my fish ( 9 ) on Wacky finesse worms and Keitech swimbaits in wind secluded coves. my buddy with a cigarette. 17 Quote

throttleplate Posted May 12, 2022 Posted May 12, 2022 Went fishing around detroit lakes minn for crappie. Wife and i during the day caught bass and pike on crappie lures, no crappie bite untill later. Later came at 6 pm, amid dark skies the crappie were biting and then at 6:15 a 45 minute deluge of rain came over us so we left all our gear on the bank and sat in the car. Now it was 7pm after the storm and the crappie were crazy, we caught a load of them, average size was 10 inches with a few 12 inchers. We used small jig heads with 2 1/2" gulp minnows. As wife started to clean the fish it was now dark out and the crappie were still lit up so as she was cleaning i kept walking up to her with another. Wife found in 4 of the fish a large amount of fish eggs. Pitch black out and still biting i decided to stop and give them a break, we arrived home at 11.30 pm, an hour drive to get home. As i took off my clothes to get into the shower i found 4 ticks on me, 2 on my scalp attached, and 2 on my back attached. 16 Quote
