To me, it looks like the exact same fish caught three times this year. This fish hovers around the 5 pound mark. The first pic (black shirt) is from June 7, and you can see the bottom tail fin eroded/gone, but the top of the tail fin appearing infected/red, but still intact. Also check out the dorsal fin and the fishes gill plate since it is being held in the exact same position, same hand in each pic. The second pic (grey shirt) was from August 4. Upper tail fin now eroded away to match the bottom of the tail fin. Third pic (orange shirt) is from Sept. 7. Same top and bottom tail notch. Same dorsal and gill cover irregularities to me. What say you? Same fish in each pic? Anyone else with pics of the exact same fish caught multiple times? C'Mon Man ~ Cut that Old Girl a break ~ Nice bass though. A-Jay 1 Quote

Anyone else with pics of the exact same fish caught multiple times? that's easily the same fish three times, there's two markings in the lateral lines that look like the letter "M" with an extra hump in all three photos. That's AWESOME! We had a cold front come through today. I didn't make much of the pre-frontal bite (where I caught the bonus baby wiper) but I was able to eek out a handful of LMB dinks before this one sent me home. Always good to leave on a high note. Edit: yes, my phone is a potato. also it was a solid 30 mins after sunset. 9 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted December 6, 2021 Global Moderator Posted December 6, 2021 The action wasn’t too swift today but the diversity was pretty crazy. I caught something like 8 or 9 species of fish, Maybe typing it out will help me remember. I got largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, what I believe was a meanmouth, white bass, black crappie, walleye, drum, bluegill, channel catfish, and skipjack herring. So that’s 9 species for sure, maybe 10. I also dropped a big spotted bass right at the boat and was donated a sauger by a friend I saw out on the water. here’s what I think was a meanmouth ⬇️ 13 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted December 6, 2021 Global Moderator Posted December 6, 2021 @TnRiver46 that's a meanie for sure. I know people see me in my kayak and think I have way too many rods. I let that get to me Saturday and I'm still kicking myself over it. I managed to cut it down to 6, really wanted to bring a rod I could punch grass or fish a frog on, but it's December in Kansas, why would I need those? If I'd have had that rod, I'd have been catching frog fish in Kansas, in December, that's why. I had fish in inches of water waking behind my spinnerbait from clumps of dead grass like it was middle of summertime, but the water was 48-49 degrees. I tried my one frog I had on my bladed jig rod with 15lb Big Game, but the bite I got on it pretty quickly, the fish just laughed at me when I set the hook on it. Still, I caught a bunch of fish and several nice quality ones. Got to really play with the new Okuma Hakai doing something I think it's a little better suited for than what I had been using it for. I was using it for spinnerbaits, but I swapped it to my lipless rod and it did great. The RES 2tap, a homemade spinnerbait, homemade bladed jig, and a Berkley Stunna did most of the damage. I was in the middle of deer hunting and duck hunting country. This picture looks peaceful and serene, but it sounded like I was in a war zone. 16 1 Quote
DINK WHISPERER Posted December 6, 2021 Posted December 6, 2021 Whenever the bass bite slows down a little my son loves to go for different species. Golden shiners and what I think is a crappie were on the list yesterday. They are surprisingly fun on an ultralight combo. ? 11 Quote

Smallmouth, I think? I have no idea what type of bass this is. What is this? Quick (not so quick) update on this fish from Texas Parks and Wildlife: "Good afternoon, Thanks for reaching out regarding the species identification of your catch. I asked a few of the TPWD biologists about the identification of the fish. Based on the pictures provided, it appears as if the fish is likely a hybrid bass but likely contains some smallmouth bass. Next time you happen to catch a similar looking fish, take a picture of the fish’s mouth to show if there is a tooth patch. Thank you, [TPWD]" so i guess we will never know for sure. i will call it a smallmouth and let that ride 1 Quote

I’ve caught LM, SM, and spotted bass with tooth patch on the tongue. It is also not uncommon to encounter a biologist that doesn’t know that! but your fish is a smallmouth, plain as day. Hybrid is a typical fall back answer we always used in college, the professors didn’t think it was funny. Maybe the biologist you talked to was in my class hahaha (most hybrids can only be proved with genetic testing) 4 Quote

Without positive ID with clear markings or genetic testing hybrid is a cop out/better sounding way of saying 'idk' 1 Quote

Lots of times they look gold like that...put in the live well for a bit and they color up with stripes. 1 Quote

Super User Team9nine Posted December 9, 2021 Super User Posted December 9, 2021 Walked to a pond that turned out to be 60 percent froze over (skim ice) when I arrived. Already here, so started on the open water portion, which eventually became 90 percent free thanks to the start of a warming trend (high 53 today) and some good wind. Turned out to be a better than expected afternoon, hooking up with a dozen bass in about 2 hours of fishing. One of them turned out to be a fish with the most melanosis I've seen on any pond bass I've ever caught. Warming trend is supposed to stick around through mid next week, so looking forward to getting out a couple more times after a storm system passes tomorrow/tomorrow night. 16 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted December 10, 2021 Global Moderator Posted December 10, 2021 Well, had an ok 2 hours but could have been better. Skipjack herring were jumping all over creation and we chased them down river for a mile or so, they are fast. I used one of them as cut bait and it got hit a couple times but didn’t hook up . Got a smallie and sauger while waiting, a huge smallie was trying to fight mine on the way in 20 Quote

Super User PhishLI Posted December 12, 2021 Super User Posted December 12, 2021 It's been frigid at night lately, but the temps jumped way up over the past two days. A super warm southern wind was really cranking yesterday, and with rain forecast over night we waded in hoping to catch an active bite. My buddy beat the skunk with one and I was able to hook a few myself. Felt good to find a little rally after a bit of a tough stretch. 16 Quote
