Jmurphy87 Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 Got the kayak out today at a new lake all small fish on a green pumpkin watermelon creature hawg with a pegged 1/8 Oz weight. I caught 7 fish total not too bad I guess not the size I was looking for though. 10 Quote

I've used bass for live bait for flatheads before, they work pretty well. I've had a few big bass eat little bass I was reeling in too, and there's some in that lake that could eat that smaller one I caught no problem. 1 Quote

Can't do that up here - bass, perch, sunnies, crappie...all illegal to use as bait in MN. 1 Quote

The Baron Posted September 20, 2021 Posted September 20, 2021 Had a great day yesterday. Did a dawn-dusk canoe/portage trip into a back lake with a buddy. He showed me how to fish structure, incl. hauling a 5# largemouth off a downed tree. We thoroughly worked a big log that ran down a steep slope 20+ft of water and he broke off what he guesstimated was 6#+ at the boat (8# fluoro, working a drop shot). It did a wallowing jump right at the canoe and it was massive - visibly bigger than his 5#. He needed a moment after that but laughed it off. lol I caught quite a few small bass and a handful of decent ones including my PB largemouth off that big log that we estimated at 3# and some change. I grew up catching smallmouth and have really only started targeting largemouth this year, and what I learned yesterday will really help me on future trips. As the sun was going down I tied on a brand new 100mm Yo Zuri 3D Pencil Popper that I really wanted to try, and tossed it out over a hard rock shoal. Time was running out as we didn’t want to be walking the 3/4 mile out in the dark, so I said “OK, last cast” and cranked it out. I walked it maybe 10ft. and it got whacked at but missed, then 10ft. later hooked up the orange-est smallmouth I’ve ever seen. I have not done any adjustment to the photo attached, but would say he was even more orange in person. It was certainly a great day! 15 Quote

Too bad we can't share some of this rain with the areas suffering from a drought. Quote

It actually hasn’t been too wet in Knoxville, it’s the surrounding areas that always get it bad Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted September 20, 2021 Super User Posted September 20, 2021 I enjoyed a week of kayak fishing during my vacation last week. The bite was definitely on fire. I was averaging 30 Bass a day, mostly Smallmouth in the 11” range. Some nice Brown and Green Bass mixed in 20 Quote

gunsinger Posted September 21, 2021 Posted September 21, 2021 Another day off last Friday so I hit the lake before the rainstorms moved in. The fish were fairly active and I caught a total of 12. This 3 lber came from behind some small twigs that were sticking up through the water. The bad things is, I was trying to land my worm in front of the twigs, but overshot them. A "well, crap" moment became joy when I felt that solid thunk. 15 Quote

Carpenater Posted September 22, 2021 Posted September 22, 2021 Brand new to bass fishing. Here are a few catches thus far. First catch, on my birthday. A green chunk caught on a shakyheaded rigged worm next to structure on a hot mid August day. Did not weight or measure. Was elated to say the least....especially on my birthday. The next fish I caught were due to going out with a guide. My trips out previously, since my first fish, had yielded nothing so I was getting rather frustrated. Learned quite a bit a from him, observing and asking question, although I only caught a rather small Green the entire guided trip. I did have a nice Brown on the line, but lost him at the boat. The guide on the other hand caught quite a few. First solo trip after the guided trip yielded this 18in, 2.3lb Brown, caught on a whopper popper. The fish got too close to my trolling motor so got a little skinned up in a couple places. Lesson learned on that one. I felt bad, but was glad to see it survive to fight another day as I am strictly a catch and release guy. Caught a small Brown right before this one. Both on the whopper. Next trip was a skunk, but the next trip got me this 15in., 1.6lb Green caught on Sexy Dawg Jr. This trip yielded 4 Greens total, this was the biggest as the rest were pretty small. I had another keeper, but it jumped off trying to boat flip it in (rookie mistake). Being a newbie and fighting the summer bite is rather challenging. Learning a lot though and with fall around the corner and with it bringing cooler water temps and more active bass hoping to catch more and bigger bass. Tight lines! 9 Quote

Tatsu Dave Posted September 23, 2021 Posted September 23, 2021 Well son had Wed off so we planned a trip, problem was they called him in to work so bummer. I still got up and slogged to the water solo and started out, forecast was cloudy and calm, water temp was low sixties. Started casting and noticed the other nights rain had raised the water noticeably and hid a lot of short stickups and stumps. Great gotta rely on memory to not practice bumper boats with the wood ? slow start but had no way to hold any fish and take pics anyhow. Then it started getting dark and a thunderstorm let loose w/ strong winds, day just got better I thought, but I noticed the wind and current had teamed up with the chop and was beating the shallows on one side. Kept casting cause that's what you do, the fishing changed quickly and the bass bite was on! First bass was 3 1/4lb's and they started coming steady, lost count of the total but enough chunkies to keep it fun. Lost a big one right at the boat when he dived into some sunken timber, threw back 2lber's as fast as possible to keep throwing that lure. Don't get days like this as often as I'd like but sure appreciate them when they come. Sorry had to hang them on my net to hold for pics but fish understood and we got thru it. Tatsu Dave 14 Quote
Tatsu Dave Posted September 23, 2021 Posted September 23, 2021 Sorry for double post but heres a bass that has just a tinge of that yellow orange coloring I posted about a while back....gotta be the craw's. If I would have had a pic taker w/ me I could have held him like my avatar, his mouth was colored inside some, oh well. What an old war veteran w/ the scars to prove it. Looks like an eagle or big fish hawk tried but failed, Love them ol' brown fish......... 11 Quote
NoShoes Posted September 24, 2021 Posted September 24, 2021 Haven’t been on much lately, or fishing at all for that matter. My mom was diagnosed with breast cancer last month, and I’ve been struggling with it. But this spring after saving up for some time my wife and I moved to a house on some acreage, and has a 1.5 acre pond it. Frankly I thought all the bass were stunted never catching anything over a pound, but there’s a massive shad population taking away from the bluegill forage. Wife and I were fishing out some of the shad, and caught a couple blue Gill as by catch and we’re getting hammered by bass reeling them in. One was particularly big and I lost him twice on the ultralight with reeling the blue Gill in. Ran to the shop for bass tackle and a shiner hook and got her first cast. Had to go in after her and busted my behind getting out. 7.3 pounds. Much needed after the past month. God comes when you need him most. 25 Quote
Super User scaleface Posted September 24, 2021 Super User Posted September 24, 2021 I caught a 5.4 lber yesterday , largest of the year . I put it on a metal clip stringer tossed it in the lake then readied my camera . With camera on a tripod , timer set I went to retrieve the bass and it straightened the stringer and was gone . 30 minutes later I hook another about the same size , it gets wrapped up in a marker buoy line and escapes . So no pictures . The lure was a 1/2 ounce Red Eye Shad tungsten two tap about 12 foot deep on a point . 14 Quote
