Not a bad morning. Started at 8:00 with a Whopper Plopper. Nothing doing on top so I switched to a Zoom Trick. Nothing there either. Went to ol’ reliable #956 Senko WR and caught this guy.

But the bite was slow. And I looked in the tackle box and decided to break out a jerkbait my daughter gifted me for Father’s Day last year, which I believe is a Googan Scout. Tried a few times before with zero action. Tied it on (I will say it has sharp hooks!) and on the second cast it got hammered as I was jerking it. Just a hair under 3 lbs.

Cast it out a few more times in the same spot and it got hammered again.

spacer.pngspacer.png

Threw it out a few more times (same spot) and this time it got whacked as it was floating back up.

The jerkbait bite seemed to stop so I switched to a paddletail swimbait (I think it’s a Keitech Swing Impact in green pumpkin but not 100% on that) and it got hammered as well.

Now it gets a little strange. So as I’m reeling this bass in, a teen (maybe from 14 to 17) walks up and asks what I caught, so I show him. As I’m talking to him I see he has some sort of plastic-bodied spincast reel and what looks like a new rod. It was, as he told me he just bought it for $4.00. He asked if I minded if he fished close to me, as he likes to talk while fishing and many others have told him no. So I kinda felt sorry for the kid, so I said ok. So he’s got some type of orangish stick bait on a “not a TR hook” rigged TR, and I have to admit, that little plastic spincast rig was getting him 3/4 of the way across the pond. I’m not sure what he was doing, but it looked like he was swimming it more than anything. He kept saying he was getting strikes, which I’m sure were just snags. Then that $4.00 rod bent. And he had a good one. I know it was at least 5 lbs, maybe 6, right out of the spot I caught all my earlier bass from lol. When it got close I tried to get him to work it my way so I could grab it with my fish grippers, but he tried pulling it out by the line and bloop! It threw the hook. I was crushed. He wasn’t lol. He asked if I thought he could catch it again and said likely not after all that action. He re-rigged a Zoom Trick (I picked out a 3/0 round offset hook for him) and he left to try elsewhere. That was enough for me, so I packed up and headed home.

But hey, a great day! Never caught three bass on a jerkbait before so another notch in the bedpost.

Dink fest on Alamo Lake Saturday. Definitely heading back this fall for a good topwater day. 18 dinks on underspins. Trees are everywhere. Good confidence booster fishing a new body of water and figuring things out.

Had the pleasure of taking a late afternoon trip with the family. Feel super blessed to have a couple teenagers who love to go out fishing.

Fishing wasn't as good as I anticipated (65* water) but we still caught quite a few on underspins.

First time fishing an A rig and well it works. I may have had to go swimming to retrieve it but it was worth is for this 4’4 chunk. Got to see the bite which was cool. I’d say I’m hooked on A rigs now.

Hit the lake again today. I wasn’t about to miss the chance to throw the A rig again and I wasn’t disappointed! New PB largie that went for 5-6. Not bad for northern Illinois. I ended with three in under 2hrs with the smallest over 2lbs. The two pics are of the 5-6. I think I may spend any free hour I get this week at this place-the bite is that good. That’s a 4-4 and 5-6 in back to back visits.

Wowza!!!! That’s awesome. 43-47 is my favorite water temp, looks like you already know why. When you say arrived, did you order those smallmouth off Amazon?? Link please, asking for a friend

Had to go out again. They are really biting an A rig right now as I pulled another good one. This one went 4-9 and I added two other smaller ones. I had one pulling drag on a locked out curado DC and ended up pulling a single fish scale. Probably snagged but it still hurt for a while.

@A-Jay  The respect you show these amazing fish is incredible!  Most people would boat flip them and they would flop around the boat for a bit.  You net your fish and then make sure they get on their pad.  Fish would want to be caught so they could get this special treatment!

Caps off!

A chilly rain all day and into Monday night quieted down last night's bite, but the Phish brothers beat dat skunk anyway with a few feisty buck bass, and none of my baits got murda'd by pickerel for once. Happy days.

And another successful hour of A rig fishing. The smallest was a low 3, then a 3-12, and 5-0. The 5-0 ate with about 6ft of line out which was quite fun.

In order: low 3, 5-0, 3-12

I’m pretty sure that every BR member has lost their head over a fish at some point in their life. ?
