He’s officially on the bass board with quite possibly a new PB for him, I didn’t get a weight but it’s top two for him no doubt. He’s still on cloud 9 right now. Well, once again time on the water pays off. Congratulations @6poundbass for landing a lunker! 3 Quote

Try something at home for calibration, like weights or a 4 lb sack of sugar Congrats on the new milestone Good idea. I'll definitely have to try that!! Got a feeling I need to take a pound and a half or so off each of those fish today. But I still feel fairly confident the larger one was a 5. It was pretty darn heavy holding with one hand. Quote

A 5 gallon bucket empty weighs 31ounces. Weighed it first and yup, that's about what rhe scale showed-31 ounces(1lb 15 oz) Then I added 3 unopened sodas in it and weighed them. 36 ounces plus the 31 from the bucket gave me 67 ounces. Divided that by 16 to get just over 4 lbs. And that's exactly what my scale read with those in there. Just over 4 lbs. So apparently I did indeed catch 2 very good fish today. Needless to say, I am stoked with the PB. 2 Quote
Super User PhishLI Posted April 7, 2021 Super User Posted April 7, 2021 The brothers Phish can't shut up about bass fishing. If there's a family function at either of our houses we'll inevitably slip away into the garage, or out to the trucks to play show and tell, or to discuss tactics. My nephews have been exposed to us in bassin mode, but for some reason we could never really gain any traction with them regarding the subject. Their faces are always stuck in cell phones. The older one's in love, we all get it, but the younger one isn't yet. Still, we couldn't get him to engage about fishing. Invited him, but he wouldn't commit.. So, I was surprised by a phone call from my sister just before X-mas of '19. She let me know that nephew #2 really wanted to go fishing with us, finally, but he wanted his own gear. We made our recommendations, she made it rain, but winter was already upon us. Then 2020 happened, so that put the kibosh on taking him out. Last week he went down to my parent's house in S.C for spring recess. Pops is in a bass club, and nephew #2 couldn't wait to get out on the water. Completely obsessed they said. My father showed him how to rig a 5" senko, then on his first cast, Bingo! Mama Phish told me he was out of his mind happy. I think we have a new member of the crew. 17 Quote

Now he will be literally hooked for life. My 2 nephews went together a couple years ago. Oldest nephew was having a lot of success catching bluegill, younger nephew was struggling mightily. At the end of the day oldest nephew caught 14 bluegill, youngest 0nly caught the one. Sadly since that day, the youngest nephew has lost interest in fishing, and has declined every time ive asked him to go ?. Can't make him go if he doesn't want to though. Unfortunately he is now addicted to phones and Xboxes....... Oh how things may have been different if he had caught at least a handful that day, or a 1 decent size bass....... but alas. Quote
Super User BrianMDTX Posted April 7, 2021 Super User Posted April 7, 2021 Man, it’s been a slow go lately. I tried a new pond a few days ago that looked good (lots of structure). But it was dead. Went back to the same old, same old pond later in the day and caught five bass. Two were pounders. The other three were maybe 6” long lol. Fished a couple hours the next day in the AM and had no bites. Came back in the late afternoon and caught another 6” whopper and this one, while I was trying to remove a wind knot. That was on a #956 Senko WR. The first trip I used a Whopper Plopper, Megabass Pop Max, Rat-L-Trap lipless, floating Rapala, spinnerbait with trailer, Rage craw, X Zone craw, Zoom Tricks, Senkos (WR & TR) and nothing was biting. It’s April and water temps in these ponds are in the 60°s. I know the bass are here, but I’ve been fishing in 2021 since January and I have not seen any personal evidence of spawning. I must be missing something. 13 Quote

finatic Posted April 7, 2021 Posted April 7, 2021 Went out on Easter Sunday and caught these two beauties. First one was 8 lbs the second was 6 lbs. These are the biggest bass I've ever caught especially for Smallmouth. Caught these on my new Lew's spinning combo. The combo was only a hundred bucks and I wasn't too sure how it would perform because I have never spent money on a combo before. It seemed to handle these hawgs just fine. Time will tell of course. 9 1 1 1 Quote

keagbassr Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 Got out to a few hours after work today. Got 6 total 3 on a spinnerbait and 3 on a buzzbait with the best a chunky 4-0 on the buzzbait. 17 Quote

Those are really nice fish, congrats! I'm....not so sure they're 8 & 6 Lb. I recommend checking your scale. Divided by 2 and maybe add 0.5-1 seems more plausible, and would still be bigger than most smallies I catch. 1 Quote

HaydenS Posted April 8, 2021 Posted April 8, 2021 @A-Jay How close have you come to your state record, 9.33 lbs I think? Those smallies you caught would pop if they got any bigger! 1 Quote

But I often fish the same 'water' that the state record came from, so I suppose anything is possible . . . A-Jay 8 Quote
