Way north bass guy Posted July 12, 2020 Posted July 12, 2020 Got my first “shipwreck bass” today. Took the kid out on Georgian Bay for a few hours this morning. We caught a bunch off shoals and points, but the best fish of the day came off an old steam ship that’s been down there for over 100 years. In the gin clear water you could easily make out the hull, it’s over 100’ long too. Surprisingly we didn’t get many off of it, but the kid thought it was pretty special to fish around a wreck. 15 Quote

Brandon O'tinger Posted July 14, 2020 Posted July 14, 2020 This porkchop absolutely ANNIHILATED a bluegill attached to my bait caster. Blew up right on top of the water. It has a rather fat belly. Did not have my scale with me, but is 3 lbs a reasonable estimate? Heres another one I caught about 2 weeks ago before my previous post from today's short trip. 12 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 14, 2020 Global Moderator Posted July 14, 2020 Been off work for a few days, so as expected, lots of fishing was done. Thursday I did a double trip. Started in the morning by myself on a small lake, crushing them on a balsa squarebill and a Big Bite Baits crawtube, over 30 in 4 hours. Didn't get a picture of the biggest, she shook out of my hand and flopped back in the water before I got a chance. Then I hurried home and swapped out boats, grabbed my boys and made a run to my mother in laws house to pick up my niece that had been begging me to take her fishing. Took all 3 kids to the same creek I've been taking the boys to and they had fun catching catfish, a gar, and watching me shoot a couple silver carp with a bow. Friday I was by myself again. It was a weird day with great numbers but mostly small fish, but they were mostly on topwater despite bright sun and hot temps. Over 40 largemouth and smallmouth made brief visits to the boat, plus a few drum and 2 sauger that I caught flipping marina docks. Sunday we loaded up the whole family and headed out for some fishing and swimming on what is supposed to be the last tolerable day to be outside for a while. There was a ton of pleasure boaters, most that shouldn't have been allowed to drive a boat, as well as a tournament on the water. Despite that, Lake caught a smallmouth on his very first cast, It took me close to a hour to finally catch a smallmouth, then I caught 2 nice ones in a row with the biggest one destroying my 6th Sense Catwalk in 3' of water at 12:40PM. Caught a few more smaller smallmouth before I found a massive school of big white bass that was feeding on shad. Several other species of fish were in the mix as well. We hammered on them for a while before we left to go swimming. Some guy in a wake boat with his head way up his backside came by pushing the biggest wake he possibly could maybe 20' from my anchored boat and rolled 2 wakes over the back of my boat all the way up to my seats. Thankfully, we'd just gotten out of the water, not sure what would have happened if my 6 year old and 3 year old would have been in the water for that. My wife was hot and wanted to go say something, having our boys in the boat was reason enough for me to just motor out of there and get away from area before she started yelling across the cove at them. Tried another point but after getting buzzed by 3 boats in short order, reminding me why I hate fishing weekends, we went back to the white bass. I was popping a jigging spoon and after working them over for a couple hours, figured out how to catch not just white bass, but also crappie and walleye. Popped 6 walleye, including 2 keepers in the 21" range (which were released after pictures), as well as a couple channel cat and one big gar. It was a lot of fun and Lake was having a heck of a time trying to crank to hard pulling whites out of 30+ feet of water. He also pulled a professional back seater move and poached a fish I'd just missed from me. It was a proud dad moment for sure ? Might have been the biggest smallmouth he's ever caught but didn't weigh it. Momma was the gar slayer, managed to bring 3 to the boat along with hooking several others, I unfortunately had to actually handle one because it got it's teeth tangled in the line, it wasn't even hooked. I let Lake crank the last walleye in. Didn't know it was a nice walleye when I hooked it, but he was excited that's what it was when he saw it. 19 Quote

Glaucus Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 I'm back in Illinois for a few days seeing the kiddos. I was able to stop at my old stomping ground for about 15 minutes before heading back to our hotel. A squarebill fished through the fast dam water never fails. P.S. Yes I'm wearing my girlfriend's extra pair of sunglasses because I forgot mine like a doofus. 8 Quote

galyonj Posted July 15, 2020 Posted July 15, 2020 This fish is pitiful, but I feel like I worked my tail off to get it, so I'm showing it off. All. Morning. For one dink. Went to two spots today. It was a weird strike on that swim jig, too. Felt a taptaptap, then nothing. Like he and I were in a Mexican standoff, waiting to see who was gonna blink first. Eventually I decided that it was a bluegill pecking at it or something, so I started reeling again, and it pulled back. It was real mad at me. This is not the fish I was hoping for. The whole time I was at this spot, I saw the silhouette of a much, much larger fish just...cruising around. It would occasionally break the surface and hit one of the eleventy billion mayflies that are flitting around here now. I threw the kitchen sink at it and never could get it interested. 7 Quote
Super User MIbassyaker Posted July 15, 2020 Super User Posted July 15, 2020 Well, the mid-summer slow-down on the largemouth lakes is underway. 4.5 hours Tuesday morning produced just 3: one chatterbait fish, one senko fish, and the long-bodied 20", 3.5 pounder below on a Pompadour jr...the only topwater strike I got: Time to start hitting the rivers again! 8 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted July 16, 2020 Super User Posted July 16, 2020 I took the kayak out for a fishing session. It’s been a minute since I have done that. Great multi-species day with over 50 fish caught. Sunfish, Yellow Perch, Fallfish, Smallmouth Bass and Largemouth Bass. The best fish was this LMB. He was a good luck bad luck catch. Good luck as he was a nice size and a great fight. Bad luck because while I was getting him out of the net he slipped out of my hand into the kayak and cause a high stick break in my rod. RIP Lew’s Mach 2 Speed Stick. Then while I was weighing him he flopped off my scale and my gripper went flying off in the opposite direction. Time to invest in a floating one. 8 1 Quote

RIP Lew’s Mach 2 Speed Stick. Aw, that sucks. I broke a rod a little while back and have been absolutely unable to get in touch with Lew's about it. I guess I'll just try to fix it. 1 Quote

My fault on this break, if it wasn’t the high sticking it was probably damage from a fall I had while holding the rod late last year. I have wanted to contact Lew’s for some spare spools for my new Speed Spin. With everything going on right now in the world I keep putting it off. 1 Quote
galyonj Posted July 16, 2020 Posted July 16, 2020 Mine, too. I'm rough on my equipment, even if/when I'm trying not to be. Carrying stuff into and out of the house, into and out of the car, all the various stuff I accidentally whack bank fishing...it takes a toll. I'm gonna try to call them again today and follow up on the emails I've sent. Here's hoping. 1 Quote

So I did a small-river float today. Smallies were a little more elusive than usual; I got 12 in 4 hours (In a stretch that often yields 2-3 times that), all but two on a whopper plopper 75, the best being this 16.5" coupla-pounder: Also happened upon a medium Abu Veritas combo tangled in the branches of a laydown, poking out of the water. I'm guessing somebody lost it overboard upriver and it washed down. The reel is a goner, and the previous owner replaced the tip at some point, but other than a couple of slightly bent guides that were easy to bend back, it looks salvageable if I can get it cleaned up: 7 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted July 18, 2020 Global Moderator Posted July 18, 2020 Went fishing with my dad Thursday. I got there 30 minutes before he did and wanted to try and get a spotted bass off the dock by the ramp since I haven't caught one the last few trips to this lake. Not only did I get one, I got 3, and the first one was the biggest I've caught in Kansas in a long time. On a wacky rigged Ocho in Glacier color. Despite clouds and cooler temps, it was a surprisingly tough bite. I was sure there would be a moving bait bite, probably topwater, but there was nothing happening except for drum. A ned rig was hammering drum, so I switched colors on dad's and he started getting the right kind. Seems like it had to be purple. I switched mine to junebug and finally caught my first smallmouth since we'd started. We'd planned on trying my spot I'd caught several walleye on the week before, but there was a boat parked on it. We waited him out for a hour, and I actually caught 1 keeper and 1 short walleye near the spot while we were waiting, before he finally left. The fish weren't there like they had been, I think the lack of sun was actually hurting this spot since it's a deep water spot. I still caught several white bass on a spoon. Dad wasn't having any luck until he finally hooked a heavy fish, clearly not a white bass. There were gar everywhere, so we assumed that's what it was. He joked maybe it was a huge walleye. I laughed and said if it's a walleye it's the biggest one that's ever been in my boat. We saw it, and well, dad now holds the record for the biggest walleye ever caught from my boat. I was worried dad would want to keep it, but he didn't even hesitate about releasing her, then I was concerned coming out of deep water and the long fight it might not make it, but after a moments rest, she threw water in my face she kicked away so hard. We caught several more white bass, I had one really eyeballing my bait. Then the gar seemed to get hungry and started cutting us off left and right. I tried something different to stay over them and stumbled on a stray smallmouth. Not much else after we decided to leave that spot so we called it a day. 18 Quote
Super User BrianMDTX Posted July 18, 2020 Super User Posted July 18, 2020 Took the new Sea Eagle Packfish7 out for its maiden voyage this morning. I haven’t fished out on the water in 30+ years. Different than bank fishing for sure! Caught four bass. Three dinks and this one. 20” and just shy of 4 lbs. Glad I bought a net! 13 Quote
