Super User N Florida Mike Posted February 16 Super User Posted February 16 @Swamp Girl We dont have pickerals in our lake. There is a small gar population, but I have never had 1 bite an artificial bait before. And my friend is a very experienced bass fisherman. I think maybe he had a little nick he didn’t notice . Still, 15 pound big game !! Hard to believe. 2 Quote

Fished hard - they were not biting real good today but we managed 13. I got into a little flurry of activity and got 4 in the last 1/2 hour, including the big fish of the day. Caught those 4 on the magnum speed worm. This was when we were nearly back to my house, fishing the northeast part of the lake. We each had a fish break our line , his broke 15 pound big game. Still hunting the elusive big fish. 6 hours ago, N Florida Mike said: @Swamp Girl We dont have pickerals in our lake. It's always 15-20 lb big game and flipping baits and it's always instant and super clean cut on hook set. I was recently told our lakes have a ton of mudfish/bowfin in addition to huge pickerel. 3 Quote
Super User Swamp Girl Posted February 17 Super User Posted February 17 When I fished northwestern Ontario, we rarely fished for pike, but pike fished for our F13 Rapalas on six-pound test that we used to catch smallmouth. Of course, we also lost some lures to pike, usually two or more everyday, but strangely, the pike we were most likely to land were the 40-inchers and the pike we were mostly likely to lose were the hammer handles. 4 Quote

Without these people on here and some really really good advice from someone on YouTube, I wouldn't have even had the confidence in fishing winter water haha. Honestly kinda surprised that I managed to even get more than 3 in those 3 days there 😂😂 2 Quote

Super User Team9nine Posted February 19 Super User Posted February 19 The recent 4” of cold rain we received has put a nice stain throughout the lake and dropped water temps into the high 40s. Tomorrow, the next Arctic blast hits with a rain/snow/sleet mix, followed by a couple windy, cold days. But today was nice, topping 50 degrees with a light breeze and some sun…and I was able to scrounge half a dozen bass to the boat - happy, happy. 21 Quote

Super User Swamp Girl Posted February 19 Super User Posted February 19 @Team9nine: I think your migration from bank fishing in the Midwest to boat fishing in the South is fascinating in large part because you consistently caught and catch bass in two starkly different environments. I didn't see any learning hiccups, but were there? And if so, what was challenging and how did you overcome it? 1 1 1 Quote

I didn't see any learning hiccups, but were there? And if so, what was challenging and how did you overcome it? “Now, the rest of the story” as Paul Harvey would say. I’ve never been without a boat for the last 35 years. The Midwest bank stuff was just the most convenient for a stretch of time, but a lot of boat trips were still made, just often for crappie. Prior to that, though, I fished bass tournaments for 25 years, so I’ve seen a lot of water in my day. I was actually looking forward to the challenge of fishing completely ‘new to me’ water for bass. There were still some adjustments; mostly different types of structure and cover types compared to the Midwest, along with some deep water options now that we rarely had back in the Midwest. The suspended bass bite is all new to me, too. It took about 3-4 fishless trips to figure it out back in January, but the pieces are finally falling into place. But every day on the water is a learning opportunity. 7 2 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted February 19 Global Moderator Posted February 19 Had a fun, productive trip after work despite the best efforts of the rowing club. I offered them $20 to go somewhere else after their fleet of a dozen row boats plus Jon boats at half throttle passed my me for the 10th time back and forth. Caught 4-5 bass and 4 crappie, with two of the crappie being keepers . Not bad for 1.5 hours! Also saw a pretty sunset. The mistake I made was leaving my canoe in the back of my truck all night and it snowed, was a little heavy this morning 😂 14 Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted February 22 Super User Posted February 22 Pretty brutal front moved through mid-week. First day post front and I knew it would be tough. Missed a good bite, broke one off, but was able to land a pair of 3 pounders…just so happens one was a crappie, and it was the bigger of the two (3.30) 😎 These fish are Lake Menderchuck Bait & Tackle approved (last pic) 😉 15 1 Quote
Super User Swamp Girl Posted February 22 Super User Posted February 22 I know this is a bass thread, but if @Team9nine stopped sharing his mega-crappies in this thread, I'd sure miss them. 2 1 Quote
Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted February 22 Super User Posted February 22 Congrats @Team9nine That's pretty dang epic to catch two 3lb Crappies in one day, that's more than many Crappie anglers will catch in a lifetime. 2 1 Quote
