@4n2t0: That's a BIG bass for Canada. Change your PB. It's more than four.

Beat the storms this afternoon. Back to the numbers lake but no wind and heavy cloud cover had the bass suspended high off the bottom and not in a good mood. Was able to piece together 27 today on a combination of cranks and shad-shape soft plastics. Overall quality was up, though I lost the best fish right at the boat, unfortunately.

How ya feeling, Woody?

Doctor said kidney stone.  I got an injection and a prescription.   When I've had stones before the pain would come and go,  but movement or what position I was in had no effect.  I can wiggle around and get pain free, but when I start moving it's really bad.  I'm a little better this afternoon.   They're missing me at work.   I'm sure when I get back I've have some problem vehicles to fix.

That's the worst thing about staying home: There's extra work when you do return.

Sorry you've got a stone, buddy, but I'm happy to read that you're a bit better. The bass in your lakes are all wondering where you went.

Great pictures, everyone!

I've been having a heck of a time getting anything of decent size lately. Been catching a bunch, but nothing really over 3#. Finally got on some bigger ones my last few trips out. Got this first guy prooobably on my last punch bite of the season. The others have been on jigs.

The end of the season is closing in, which makes me incredibly sad. Still have another 1.5 months left or so. Every year at this time I tell myself I'm moving south. 😅

Had to return to my pal's pond to flip the canoe with rain coming. While there, I fished the last 1.25 hours of light. Caught eight with a spinnerbait and popper. All the same size. Only photographed the last four, as I was hoping for something bigger with the first four. When I realized it was going to be a Same Size Night, I thought, "I better photograph something!":

I think we're finally in fall down here. Car said 54 when I got to the lake this morning. They weren't where I expected them to be but I eventually got into some. Only stuck the one, but had probably six or seven misses which is a positive sign. I don't think the giants are quite up with them yet but we're not far from that

2nd biggest fish caught this year at the dam on the Sheyene river in ND. Caught while fishing for whatever wanted to bite using 30LB 832, 15 LB flouro leader, 1/8 ballhead jig tipped with a minnow using a bobber.

Finally back doing some river fishing huh @throttleplate?

Yeah, been awhile as the sheyene is to this day and all summer has been high where the shoreline is under water, had a few feet of shoreline last week to get out there. Been fishing the lake bank mostly for crappie and bluegill which the bluegill are very catchable this year with this nice weather.

Got some intel on a couple new spots…rumor has it they both are filthy with bass.

First up is a creek that connects two man made lakes that I have fished previously.  However I’ve never tried to fish the creek until now.
IMG_2275.jpeg.34432759fe529d32207424751012c0b6.jpeg

Caught three small ones with the below fish being the largest.

Next day I tried the other spot which is a reservoir.  I had high hopes seeing as how it was off the beaten path.

While the rumors were true that it was filled with bass but unfortunately they were all this size

A little frustrated with the lack of quality I returned to the New Reservoir where I did slightly better from a size perspective and a lot better numbers wise.IMG_2290.jpeg.d5402cbe3a851995d3653841da3cd525.jpegIMG_2289.jpeg.57fc79f5d0903775e88c357a1762bdf2.jpeg

Those spots below a dam where he fishes are literally the only place I could see myself bank fishing.

I like the variety of fish he catches. Nowadays, when a fish hits, it's going to be a lmb, smb, or pickerel. Pretty predictable.

Note: I am not good fishing off-shore brush-piles. I am even worse fishing crankbaits. Yesterday was slow...so tied on a Shad Rap, and worked the brush-piles...

Eight LMB's in a little over two hours.

Ended with a 17", 17-1/2", and 17-3/4" in a ten minute span. Good fun!

@DaubsNU1: Swell fishing, Daubs! Good size too. I'm going fishing this afternoon. Gonna drift and fan cast, hoping to stumble on a big girl wolf pack. When I reach the end of a windblown drift, I'll troll back and begin again. Fishing tomorrow morning too. If today's drift fishing works, I'll do more of the same tomorrow morning. If not, I'll do the old plug and grind.

Well, my drift and cast idea didn't work. I did catch nine in two hours, but none of the four-plus-pounders I was targeting. It was pretty choppy with the occasional whitecap:

I was mostly using a spinnerbait. My lipless caught nothing. This was the average size:

When I was blown into a shore, I saw a bass feeding and pitched a popper to it. It was my biggest.

The fish are fattening for the winter. Even this short one was well fed.

Pretty pic!

I'm launching again tomorrow morning in the dark. Fingers crossed I find a big one!

Maine might be at its most beautiful when it's snowing, Alex. I've planted a mound of red twig dogwoods and another of yellow twig dogwoods, which are bright red and bright yellow in the winter. They're both backdropped by giant arborvitaes, so the red and yellow stems are frosted with white, glistening snow. I just smile thinking about it.

Well, this morning reminded me a day last fall where I managed to catch some fish, but never managed to find their pulse. I caught 25 total, all on a Dobyns spinnerbait with an orange Mayor and my Yo-Zuri popper, but nothing over 18 inches and eight of them came in two flurries. The first flurry happened when I was paddling across a rocky flat and a couple bass bolted from two reeds.

"Hmmm," I thought, "so that's where you hang."

So, I cast my popper to five other tiny stands of reeds and caught five smallies.

The other flurry happened when I was paddling back and saw two loons diving and diving.

"Hmmm," I thought, "bait."

Yep, I hooked four lmb in four casts, but only landed three, each about 17 inches, all on the spinnerbait.

All my other bass came here and there. No pattern, no pulse.

My stupid, old camera stopped working (AGAIN!), so I used my cell phone, which takes much better photos. See?

Then the Sun rose.

shortshoreline.jpg.e9ddfa9039b11587550c740b061df2f9.jpg

To take a photo, I had to remove my cell phone from its waterproof pouch, rouse it, and then shoot, all while the bass was drowning in air, so I only took two bass pics, the first a typical fat bass and the second, a longer, skinny one that I caught in weeds.

^See^ my stupid, old camera? I shouldn't complain. I've used it for about 35 years. However, it is a slacker compared to my bike, which I've ridden for 53 years.

That’s some beautiful scenery @Swamp Girl 😎

I’ve been so uninspired about anything lately, it was a toss up whether we’d fish at all this weekend (didn’t fish last weekend either 😕).  But I felt guilty at the thought of “wasting” a beautiful early fall day, so Wes and I went after smallmouth.  There’s a particular stretch of shoreline that has produced a few for me on a whopper plopper/Choppo in the fall so that was my plan.  Water temps were about 67 degrees.  We started in about 6-8ft. of water with sparse coontail, and I caught a chunky pike on about my 5th cast.  Not long after we’d moved to a deeper shoreline I caught a 2.60# smallmouth near a rock sea wall between two docks in about 5-10ft. of water (it’s a steep shoreline, dropping from 5 to 35+ ft. in a casting length.  The pattern along that steep shoreline was my El Choppo 105 around docks, and I weighed four 2-2.5# smb.  But it wasn’t a barn burner with a fish every 20-30min. and Wes blanking with his flashy swimmer (we’ve got several other ploppers, but he didn’t want to change).  So, I suggested we try a long underwater point that rises steeply from 30ft. of water to a narrow flat 8-10ft. deep.  I think we stumbled into a feed and Wes caught a 3.72# on his 2nd cast with a buzzbait (was trying for a largemouth) and I landed a 3.35# and a 4.01# about 5 minutes apart.   My 4# was very cool because I had just cast when a good smallmouth swirled 10ft. in front of the boat with a bunch of minnows spraying ahead, then my plopper got whacked about 1 second later.  I had one other miss on the plopper, then we lost track of the school,  We did see some bait busting again a couple times and trolling motored over there quickly with no luck.  So after 1/2 hour with no more bites, we called it a great afternoon and headed home for dinner. 🙂
