I'm not sure what you mean by not turning the rod over. Do you mean from ferrules up to ferrules down or the rod's to the right of my torso and then the left?

I've posted this before. Go to the 42:00 minute mark. This shows what I am talking about when I say turning the rod over but you are actually turning the fish over as well.

One important thing about that 5lb line..... On a boat or kayak, I am using a net every single time no matter if it's a dink or a monster.  I also retie often.

Fish were mostly noncompliant, so it was nice being distracted by this eagle on the shore we were working.

Thought the rainy weather yesterday might be good, and it was for my son but we caught mostly small pike.  My son had the hot stick catching about a dozen, including his new PB lmb at 3.74# caught on a b&b chatterbait.  He caught another that was very long, but skinny and only weighted 3.3#, that one on a flashy swimmer.  It seemed the fish wanted moving baits in the middle of the water column in 6-10ft. yesterday.  Dad got trampled, I only caught one 2.5er on a frog and a couple small pike so didn’t make the podium for any photos.lol

Our bass opener here was yesterday. It was WAY too wet and miserable to take the boat out, but luckily I was able to walk behind the house to the river that runs through our property and scratch the itch! I’ve not missed an opener in well over 30 years, so it sure was nice to have the “ extreme local” option to catch a few😏

Funny bite this morning - ran out at 0630 to throw topwaters in the windy sprinkles before the real storm. Had the 'First Cast Curse' where this largie crushed my skimmer spook. Then proceeded to walk the bank and miss at least 6 - just rolling over it, zero hooksets.

Then went for a spinach and feta omelet with hash browns, an english muffin, and a side of bacon :)

I'm launching at five. At seven, heavy rain is forecast, .7" in one hour. It's gonna be pounding!

Rough one today folks.  First time fishing from a kayak.  I borrowed it from my brother in law.   Spent more time repositioning and orienting than actually fishing.

Got two bites, got them both to the boat then promptly lost both at the boat as I fumbled around with my rod and paddle while trying to lip them and not capsize at the same time.

Few lessons learned:

- Need a larger kayak.  I’m not a huge guy but I was super cramped and when you add two rods and an over the shoulder tackle bag I felt like I was flying economy with Southwest.

- Net is required equipment.  I used to wonder why folks in kayaks/canoes didn’t just lip them.  Now I see why.

- Strongly considering a peddle drive of some sort.  Have to constantly pick up the oar and put down my rod was not the most efficient use of my fishing time.

@bp_fowler: Kayak fishing requires organization, for sure.

@Jmurphy87: I'm just glad you're fishing...and catching, regardless of their size.

@Way north bass guy: I never tire of pics of your river.

@The Baron and @NorcalBassin: Kids rule and dads drool!

@OHBuckets: That omelet: YUM!

Got out for about 3 hours after work  this afternoon until a couple.rumbles of thunder chased me off. Caught 5 bass with 1 decent one weighing  3-15  on a frog.

I didn't get to fish at all last year due to illness, back injury, and hospitalization for heart rythym issues. Got back out there finally this here and here is my first bass that I caught since returning to the waters. Ironically nothing bit bass baits that say, but I got it, along with some nice shellcracker on nightcrawlers with my light set up

I miss multi-species outings. When I fished the Mississippi, I'd have seven species days. Sometime nine species days!

And here we are a private lake with willing participants. I try new colors, techniques, and new spots on the 2 acre lake.

Celebrate Happy Birthday GIF by Sesame Street

I've been wanting to toss a fluke all year. 'Cause of you, I'm rigging one for this afternoon's fishing trip.

FWIW, I know the gif looks like a Muppet, but it's not. That's actually me celebrating your catch.

Was your brother with you?

That's sure a pretty pond.

Got skunked for the first time in a long time this morning. The first hour was dark and overcast with lots of lightening and crazy thunder. And then the rain hit and I had to run for cover. It was a really weird and ominous atmosphere pre rain. Odd, dim light that made me feel like I was going blind.

I also went to the river for an hour yesterday evening and tried to catch some Smallies. But the river is blown out from all the rain, and the only action I could get was a kind of fish I am currently being bullied about. 😄

Sounds like my last fishing trip. I sat for an hour on the shore waiting for the lightning to pass. When the lightning started, the bass stopped.

@gimruis better live a good life or when it's over, he'll find himself with a tacklebox full of Whopper Ploppers at a lake full of only rock bass.
