Super User BrianMDTX Posted June 10, 2024 Super User Posted June 10, 2024 @Fishlegs I don’t know why, but yeah, my jig action has really picked up. Ok, I think I know why. I’ve recently started using 1/4 oz. swim jigs and that seems to have made a difference. I fish shallow water so the sink rate is probably a better fit, and it doesn’t get stuck in the muck and algae as much. Or…it’s something else. At this point I don’t care! 😂 4 1 Quote
Pat Brown Posted June 10, 2024 Posted June 10, 2024 I'm outta likes for the day but that's beautiful fish @thediscochef Super happy to see such AWESOME success happening so fast for you on the jig @BrianMDTX and for that matter @Dan N! When they smash it out of site under something sneaky you generally know you're about to get your arm yanked off!!! Brian - I believe that 4 lber would be a 5 all day a few weeks back and has a big mouth on it! Absolutely killer stuff. 1 Quote
Fried Lemons Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 A couple more from another stretch of river. First fish was loosely associated with a tree and grass. The other fish I caught was on an extensive flat with scattered rock. Slammed the bait on the end of a long cast. Third fish came at the end of the flat loosely associated with a log jam. Thickest fish I’ve seen so far on this river - almost 3lbs at only 15”. I ended up missing 4 out of 7 bites which was a bit frustrating. Overall I really liked this section of river - very wide with good depth and variety. 22 Quote

RenzokukenFisher Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 From a nightfishing trip a couple days ago. Nightfishing has always been my favorite time to go out and get em, especially on these heavily pressure California ponds. The fish just turn on at night and its a blast. Caught about 5 of this size, a few a bit chunkier in the midsection. They wouldnt eat anything else besides a weightless super fluke. Sometimes they nailed it on the fall after a cast, other times they nailed it as I twitched it towards a weedline. The fluke bite is one of the best there is, up there with a jig, good times 17 Quote
Fried Lemons Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 Went back to the same rocky flat I was finding fish on last time and the conditions were just right. Overcast with wind blowing from the north. I started throwing the soft glide but felt that I should be fishing something fast and aggressive. Tied on a squeaky black buzzbait and within four casts a massive blowup. She jumped fully out of the water twice and shook free of the main hook but got stung by the trailer hook in the process. Thought I had the four I was after but she was just short. Caught a few small ones after and then the wind and topwater bite died. Dumped another nice one on the soft glide working a tree then called it a day as the recreational boaters were coming out. 21 Quote
Super User Swamp Girl Posted June 12, 2024 Super User Posted June 12, 2024 @Fried Lemons: You catch BIG lmbs and now you're catching FINE brown bass, including a CRAZY 3-lb.-15-incher. Are LONG tarpon next? @thediscochef is now fishing like a Mainiac too, sometimes known as a Mainer. It's great to have you posting in this thread, @RenzokukenFisher! 1 1 Quote
IcatchDinks Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 Haven't been fishing in about a week and a half. (That's not strictly true: I took some more of my siblings fishing last weekend, but I didn't catch anything as I spent most of my time helping them catch stuff.) Despite a late night last night, I got up at six and hit the pond before work. Managed to get several bass. Nothing big, but they were all fighters. Also, using a ultralight gear made the fights far more interesting. One fish had a dead eye, but his partial blindness didn't stop him from absolutely hammering my crank bait. Also caught a nice bluegill. He'll be in the Other Species thread. Felt good to catch fish again. 13 Quote

I grew up waist deep in swamps and my wife told me something was wrong with me so many times, I was beginning to believe it. Now I know I'm not alone! There's something wrong with BOTH of us! 2 2 Quote

bp_fowler Posted June 12, 2024 Posted June 12, 2024 Back at St. Joes at daybreak. Started off at the crescent shaped weed bed that’s been a hot spot for me recently. Caught one on the chatterbait, with another three with a paddletail all of them being about the same size as the fish pictured below. Moving on to the South side of the lake I caught a couple more dinks with the paddle tail and then caught this guy when I switched to the chatterbait again. Recently I made a post in another thread about how I never used straight braid. Well today after I broke off at the leader knot twice on the hookset I gave it a shot and tied to my mainline. Well I landed this guy below which ended up being my best and last fish of the day. Made me a believer alright! Covering water, bank angler style. 17 Quote

Super User Swamp Girl Posted June 13, 2024 Super User Posted June 13, 2024 Hey, guys, remember that I found this boat in my swamp. There is as much water in her hull as under her hull. As realtors like to say, she's an easy fix. 4 3 Quote
IcatchDinks Posted June 14, 2024 Posted June 14, 2024 Spent two hours fishing this morning. Caught a lot of smallish largies. The only really big bass I saw chased my bait into the shallows, fully committed to hit it, and then a smaller bass dashed in and stole it from him. The cool thing is that a year or two ago, I would have considered these decent fish. But now they're just average. I take it as a sign of my own improvement as an angler that I've come to expect more and better fish than I used to 15 Quote

throttleplate Posted June 15, 2024 Posted June 15, 2024 Wife and I caught these 20 bluegill in 2 hrs at our favorite lake bank in minn. We caught so many more but tossed the small ones back in. No bass were biting which is unusual for this place and i am not sure why. I used a tiny ice fishing jig and i bought some live wax worms 36 per container for $2.99 at fleetfarm. What i did because the wax worms are like jello and after 1 fish they are sucked off or stolen off the hook under the bobber is i thread the hook through the length of the worm and then i take a small tube and cut 3/4 off, put the tube on which jams up against the worm making it much harder for the worm to be sucked off. In the picture that little amount of worm left on after several fish is all it takes to get the fish to bite, the tube alone when used as a whole didnt do squat but the wax worm was the deal. 21 Quote
Super User Swamp Girl Posted June 15, 2024 Super User Posted June 15, 2024 @throttleplate: I'm jealous. I'd love to catch bluegills like that! Quote
