It was windy yesterday so I went up a river to get out of the wind. I was struck by how brown it still it is here. It looks like November and felt like it too yesterday. I managed 11 bass, but also saw an osprey, loon, Canada geese, red-winged blackbirds, and beaver. All the bass were tight to zombie weed shorelines and all were caught on my Keitech, although I did try five other lures: a beaver tail, strolling, Whopper Plopper, jointed Rapala, and squarebill. I'm going fishing again right now to my pond, which is a quantity pond. I need a break from fishing for another PB! After working so hard to catch 11 bass, I hope I fare better in the three hours I'll have this morning. Fingers crossed! Katie-2 observations from your posts. Your fish love keitecs. Do you know what their primary forage is? Sounds like you have it dialed in. Do you ever try a keitecs on a swim jig? Bigger profile but similar action, I'd be interested to hear if they'll bite it and if it's a larger average catch (although your average fish looks incredible and maybe hard to improve on) 'only 11 fish' 👀😎 you are blessed to have great waters. I think I've caught 1 fish in my last 15 hours of combined trips! Although I was hunting big ones, but catching is fun. Always interesting to see how different all of our fishing areas are. One thing I've learned from @Pat Brown through local observation is how different each body of water is. One lake they'll love something, the next one down they won't touch it! I think the bait monkey talks to the fish. 😅 4 Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted May 8, 2024 Super User Posted May 8, 2024 Hot and muggy with SW winds 14-20 mph. Really clear water made things interesting. Saw a few bass on beds along with a few roamers, but they were pretty skittish and non-committal. Finally figured out there was a better post spawn bite going on, and was able to put 10-12 fish in the boat, including a good one (over 5-1/2 lbs.). Water temps high 70s, and nearly a dozen rigs in the lot - a decent bit of traffic for a weekday. 26 Quote
Pat Brown Posted May 8, 2024 Posted May 8, 2024 Went to the pond after work and fished slow for a bit and got some nibbles but nothing solid. It went up to 86° today so I figured since the sun was setting, better grab the frog. Walked the bank hitting main structure and pieces of heavy cover trying to find post spawners and worked my way to a flat near a bunch of people pan fishing and having a big party complete with boom box and screaming children. I made a cast into the adjacent shade on a point away from other people's lines and walked my frog three times and this beautiful bass smashed it.....and my fantastic frog rod of 3 years. RIP frog rod. Saw a fish that was 27" long and 10" tall and 10" wide laying eggs today on the new moon. Snapped this picture.... incredible fish to watch. So much character in her eyes and face and such a beautiful animal. Hoping to get some more topwater action rolling tomorrow morning before work if the fates allow. It's more fun when fish bite stuff like this for sure. 😁 24 Quote
CastingClinic Posted May 8, 2024 Posted May 8, 2024 Fat perch and a dinky bass. Slow fishing yesterday. Got in trouble with the wife trying to chase the skunk away before finally snagging these two. Tied a handful of baits but a spinnerbait came in again to save the day. 21 Quote
Pat Brown Posted May 8, 2024 Posted May 8, 2024 Pre Work Froggin' Success! Pad Perch - gone. She hit right off a dock as the sun came up. Had little bass blowing up on my braid a lot this morning! Very weird and a new thing for me this year. Missed on that got the frog for a split second but I think it was small. Looking forward to hitting it after work for hopefully some more topwater action! Tight lines to all today. 22 Quote
Jmurphy87 Posted May 8, 2024 Posted May 8, 2024 Well I stopped by maple lake after another 13 hour shift this morning. I caught 2 dinks and an upgraded dink all on a weightless fluke. I followed @Woody B advice and left after catching the upgraded dink and not making one more cast. I fished for 30 minutes or so. The smaller ones came along the bank and the larger one was hiding underneath the tree in the shade. Hard to believe that we got crazy storms yesterday. 22 Quote
Super User Swamp Girl Posted May 8, 2024 Super User Posted May 8, 2024 Nice bass, Murph (@Jmurphy87). 13 hours...whoa. Pat (@Pat Brown) just keeps catching and catching and catching. Love that perch, @CastingClinic! Of course, @Bazoo wins the day for taking a kid fishing. 2 2 Quote

bp_fowler Posted May 8, 2024 Posted May 8, 2024 Quick trip out to the Crappie Hole today. We had some T-storms roll through last night so there were bluebird skies, 80 degrees and 8 mph west winds. Only caught two. One dink with a paddle tail on a swim bait head. The other fish I caught with a square bill. I weighted it at 2.14 pounds making it my biggest fish that I’ve caught cranking. So far I’m pretty hit or miss with the technique but catching this fish definitely motivates me to keep trying. 19 Quote

Love that perch, @CastingClinic! Of course, @Bazoo wins the day for taking a kid fishing. Yep 14 hours today and the rest of the week lol. It’s good for the paycheck, well sort of I am salary so it’s straight time. But at least I got something extra instead of nothing. I definitely recommend that you try a fluke, I started throwing them last year and I have confidence in them already. There was a couple of guys in a boat throwing spinner baits past me and people fishing on other banks. I never saw them catch anything and that always baffles me, I want everyone to catch fish and have fun it’s just my nature. 1 Quote
Super User BrianMDTX Posted May 9, 2024 Super User Posted May 9, 2024 Ok, not great but not bad. Went out this morning and caught six. All were 1 to 1-1/2 lbs. Did have something occur I’ve always wondered about and it finally happened. I was working a weightless Senko TR and was casting under the low limbs of a hemlock that juts out over the water. One cast was a bit high and the line went over a limb and the Senko dropped down into the water. As I started to reel it in slowly to see it I could ease it over the limb without snagging, a bass took the bait. So it was fish on! and the line was over a limb. To make matters worse, the branch was covered in someone’s old line. What a mess! I had to cut the old line to get my line loose, but in the end, I freed my line, removed the old line…and boated the bass! Thank God it wasn’t a 5 lb’er or I would have lost it for sure. It’s the bass in the second pic. 21 Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted May 9, 2024 Super User Posted May 9, 2024 Fish last night from 8p - 3a and caught two. Bigger one pictured. There's an amazing amout of cicadas on the water. 17 Quote

Super User T-Billy Posted May 9, 2024 Super User Posted May 9, 2024 2024 night ops are officially underway. No bigs, but decent numbers of these guys running the inside weed edges. Got started at 02:30 this morning. @A-Jay, I thought of you this morning at 03:47. Didn't connect, but I got a bite that startled me so bad I got goosebumps. Given the lake and location, I'd wager either a small muskie or a big eye. I don't know the reason, but my hook/land percentage isn't good on those super hard bites. My theory is that they have it so tight in their mouth, that it's hard to move the bait in their yap enough to bury the hook good. Dunno, it always leaves me wondering how the heck those fish didn't get hooked. Anyway, the night bite should only get better from here. In a couple weeks we'll have lots of topped out hydrilla beds up shallow, and the girls will be getting over their post spawn funk and come shallow looking to fatten up on spawning gills. 17 Quote
IcatchDinks Posted May 9, 2024 Posted May 9, 2024 Got an hour of fishing in on Tuesday. It was overcast with a sporadic drizzling rain. Caught a nice bluegill and small largie. 17 Quote
keagbassr Posted May 9, 2024 Posted May 9, 2024 Got out this morning around 7-11:30. Boated 13 bass,1 on a spinnerbait, 2 on a frog and 10 on a buzzbait with one decent one that went 3-8 on the buzzbait. 16 Quote
