I stand corrected. Summertime BBQ does beat grilled hotdogs....don't know what I was thinking! I am on a "Mediterranean Diet", because of age, cholesterol, and the fact that my cook says it's so! But I slipped off that diet Friday! We are seriously looking for some mid 70's. It was low 90's all weekend and my Blue Raiders let one slip away against Alabama Saturday. It was close until right after kick-off!? 4 Quote
Blue Raider Bob Posted September 5, 2023 Posted September 5, 2023 Set out a minnow trap in the Harpeth River in the mid-state and this is my catch. Used a commercial crayfish bait I bought from (where else), Louisiana. I do not live bait fish but I can imaging what would happen if I floated one of these down the banks of the Tennessee River! These little fellas now live in my pond. I caught a couple dozen crayfish as well out of the Stones River yesterday. Hoping gimrius doesn't notice that there aren't any Bass in the picture. I'd like to avoid a citation if possible, although I did get my hair cut! 6 2 Quote
Super User LrgmouthShad Posted September 5, 2023 Super User Posted September 5, 2023 Didn’t take my last trip too serious because I had some problems going on but figured I’d share that I got a smallmouth. Also found an underwater bridge and discovered that walking a spook ain’t too hard 15 Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 5, 2023 Global Moderator Posted September 5, 2023 Had a fun day with the family on the water on Sunday. My oldest son was the only other one that wanted to fish. I took both kayaks and shoved his off while I was rigging mine up still. I don't think I'd even got mine off the trailer yet and he was already yelling. It was quite a struggle for him to get the fish in the kayak, but he finally got it landed. I was about ready to shove off when he hooked up again. And as soon as I shoved off, he was coming back with another one. The boat was in the water then and he chased them to go swim. I caught a couple little fish before hooking one that was not little, but also for sure not a bass. Monday, I went back out to the river with better bait and more time than last time. I wasn't there 30 minutes before my first rod took off. I had just released that fish when I heard a thump, one of my other rods was folded over. 100lbs of fish in 10 minutes is a workout. I got the rods baited back up and 20 minutes later, one started going off again. I only had 1 more bite I think was a catfish the next few hours, despite moving spots and constantly refreshing my baits. Heading back in, I had my UL with a 2" grub I'd brought to try and catch bait with, so I was making cast with that. In the creek, there was several trees dropping some kinds of berries and the grass carp were thick. I've never sight fished one with a grub before, but I ended up hooking 4 and landing 2 on 4lb test with a 5' UL ugly stick. Right before the ramp, there's some small rapids that I wanted to cast the grub at, hoping for a white bass or wiper. Right as I went to lift it out of the water, I caught a tiny sauger. Not a big deal a lot of places, but a river sauger in Kansas is extremely rare. I had some crawlers so I swapped my grub for half of one, and a few cast later, caught a baby walleye. Fish like these give me hope that some day there will actually be a population of them in the river. 18 1 Quote

HUGE cats, @Bluebasser86! A warning? Johnny Law aka @gimruis is softening in his advancing age. 1 1 Quote

BASS302 Posted September 5, 2023 Posted September 5, 2023 @Blue Raider Bob, If you don't live bait fish, why are you setting out a minnow trap? What are those larger fish on the right-hand side? Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted September 6, 2023 Global Moderator Posted September 6, 2023 Fun evening ! We all got a pretty decent one and some dinks. 18” with fly rod, 19” with Texas rig and what I was catching was with a hand poured paddle tail. On the double, I had a follower chasing my fish. It got close enough for my buddy to just drop a topwater next to it and he got it!!!! Usually we can never catch the followers. Also got a mooneye or goldeye and used it for live bait to no avail 16 Quote

I don't know what the larger minnows are even though I have a fish ID book. I would have to kill the fish to determine its species and I'm not that desperate to know. They are five or six inches long and the area streams are full of them. They readily eat pelleted fish food that I feed to my BG's. Quote

Striped shiner gets pretty big too Quote

thediscochef Posted September 6, 2023 Posted September 6, 2023 My thumb took another beating this morning. Got on a consistent chatterbait bite for the first time in a few months, went with a buddy to Texoma and spent the morning pitching and flipping at docks from the shore. Caught a nice spotted bass and a dink, then two nice 3-4lb LM with the smallest LM to finish the day. The biggest fish beat out a bigger fish, looked like a solid 6+. I'm not complaining though. The only real disappointment was that I fell pretty hard on the rocks, and my buddy only caught a dinky sand bass. My casting arm took the brunt of the fall, it bent in some weird ways. I'm probably pretty lucky it didn't break but I did pull pretty much every muscle in my arm, I'm gonna be casting lefty for a bit. It was nice to get some good bites again, no regrets. 19 Quote

Kind of like taking toddlers to Olan Mills back in the day. 1 hour ago, ol'crickety said: Bob, do you ever recognize gamefish in your trap? Yes, all the time. I release LM, BG, catfish, and Green Sunfish. I only bring home what I would consider as minnows. I can expect different species at different locations. I have learned to avoid spots where the preponderance may be Greenies because I do not want them in my pond. The main reason I do this is just because I love being in the water, and all water related exercises. Always been that way. I'll share a picture of the upper reaches of the middle fork Stones River that I've sent to you before. It's serene places like this that keep my motor running! 1 Quote

I was kinda messing around. First time throwing a squarebill in 5 years 1 Quote
