@thediscochef If that’s a two lb. bass, I’ll eat my hat. Not with that belly!

 

Slow day yesterday. Very hot as far as temps and the bite was simply off. Started with a chatterbait and a PopMax and nothing doing. Switched to a TR with a Rage Tail Craw and caught two. Also caught two on a Rage Bug and one on a Yum Dinger WR. Also tried a spinnerbait and nada. The worst part of the day was I did hook one really nice bass on the craw that must have been barely hooked in the lip as it jumped and threw the hook. Looked about 3.5-4 lbs. Funniest catch was the tiny bluegill I caught on the craw. As well as one pic that looks like I caught a bass head ?

 

 

@ol'crickety I keep forgetting to take pics of the cover I’m fishing. I guess I get too wrapped up in getting the bait back in the water lol. Maybe one day I’ll remember!

But, bad luck or not, I kept at it and boated over 15, including a 4.5 lb and a 6 lb. And the stranger I took along added 4 to the pot including his own 21.5”, 6 lb’er.

Bless you for bringing a random bank angler with you, the world could use more of that attitude. I've had a few of those experiences and I don't forget the people who let me on their boats. I'm glad the bass cooperated for you after that, awesome!!

Spent this past week hand carving and hand painting a crankbait. I've never tried making lures before, but after watching several YouTube videos, it looked like something I could do too. I finished it up last night and got up early before church this morning to give it a try. I caught decent largemouth on it.

 

I probably won't use the bait again because it's not the best crankbait I've ever used. It wants to pull to one side and I didn't space my hooks far enough apart, so they occasionally become tangled. I have cheap crank baits that work better and that I haven't spent hours hand carving. But it sure feels rewarding to catch something on a lure I made with my own hands.

That's an experience most won't ever have, too cool! All the carvers start somewhere though...Marling Baits has a really good video about that. Great job!

Thanks! Marling is one of my favorite YouTubers to watch, and the one who inspired me to try my hand at it. The guy is an absolute artist. And super funny to boot.

I second what @thediscochef said. You have a talent for carving. I can't believe that your crawdad was your first effort. Plus, it caught a bass, so it's not just a pretty exoskeleton.

The issue is that every scale is different. Some are calibrated, most aren’t. Unless everyone is using the same scale (like at a weigh in), it’s never going to be a universal measurement amongst us.

 

Thats partially why I primarily measure my fish instead. 18 inches is 18 inches on every single measuring board. Variation from one measuring board to another does not exist like it does with scales.

 

I’m not going to guess how much that fish in question weighs. But I will say it’s more than 2 pounds.

I measure more than I weigh because I get a good photo with the bump board cradling and calming the bass. For my bigger fish, I often weight and measure, but sometimes I'm happy with just the length and the photo. 

 

To your point, I get that. The pro kayak anglers just measure, so there are other bass fishers like you who feel that a length is sufficient and the best way to measure one fish versus another.

I think it could also be a regional thing. I’m in walleye and muskie country and no one weighs those. I grew up with a measuring board in the boat, not a scale. A lot of tournaments have moved to immediate release format and in the absence of having an official in each boat to weigh the fish, measuring the fish and taking a photo (just like you and I do) is how they do it.

I've never caught a 7lb fish. But I've caught plenty of 2lbers. Your fish is AT LEAST twice the size of any of my two pound fish.

^This^ is another reason I measure length more than I weigh. I'm slower to weigh a fish than measure one. I have to turn on the scale. Then zero it. Then clamp the bass. Then wait for the bass to stop wiggling enough for me to read the weight. Then unclamp the bass.

 

Still, I'm glad I have my weight scale. As Alex predicted, I've weighed enough bass to ballpark them now. Then there are exceptions, like this 19"-bass that weighed five and a half pounds, whereas most 19" Maine bass weight four pounds. Both measuring her length and weighing her confirmed how special she was.

I also have become partial to measuring. Especially considering how depending on what the fish eats, what season it is, spawn, etc, they can weigh more or less. Length pretty much always stays the same unless something took a bite. ?

You're right. That ol' gal has been chomping at the feed bag, but not enough of her vittles made it to her tail! She's like a fat woman from an old cartoon with tiny ankles and feet.

I went this morning.  I was going to leave my boat at the landing (at the campground) but when I left it was full.   The Park (Ebenezer Park, York SC) was at capacity.  They were only letting people in as people left.   I've never been there on a Summer weekend.  I left my boat at my Sister in laws house a few miles away so I don't have to drive there with the camper, then come all the way back home to get the boat.   I caught 8.  7 Largemouth and 1 Spot.  1 on a T-rig, the others on a bladed jig.    All of the largemouth were between 13 and 15 inches.  This will make Alex mad, but I think I hate spots.  I caught all 7 LM's before the spot.  As I said earlier all between 13 and 15 inches long.  When I hooked the spot I thought I had a bigger one.  It was by far the smallest fish I caught today.   (pictured)  If it's going to fight like an 18 incher it should be 18 inches long.  (LOL)   I guessed it at 12 inches but I didn't even compare it to the inch marks on my boat.  ( I have marks at 14, 18 and 22 inches)  I'm still working on the phone/camera positioning.

Happy Fathers day....had some fun at my pond today. It was beautiful out, hope everyone got their time to fish. The streak continues, 3 different species in 2 hour time. Caught 6 total, 2 snakeheads (dispatched, 7lbs 4oz, 6lbs 7oz), 3 large mouth, biggest is 2lbs 7oz, and a cichlid. 

 

CAN NOT believe that the snake heads were both caught on a spinnerbait. First bass was on the whopper plopper and the rest were on a new fathers day present from my son, the Rapala Shadow Rap Shad. 

 

Great day to do some fishing......

WOW......I thought I saw it all, but today, I got 2 snakeheads on a SPINNERBAIT. Can scroll up and look at it still in his mouth on one.

I am from Florida, we have outdoor BBQ's when the storms come. First things to sell out is #1 Beer, #2 Toilet Paper and #3 Bottled Water.

Got out again this afternoon, after a great Father’s Day brunch and some family time.  Tried a large 12ft deep weed flat surrounded by 40+ feet of water.  Should be killer, but no bites.  I did map it on the Garmin for future use, as it doesn’t show up on the lake maps.?

We then moved shallow and found some in 3-10ft. of water.  My son was throwing a wacky rigged senko and caught several dinks then unfortunately he hooked what looked like a good one that did a couple drag pulling runs and then somehow just came unhooked.  I ended the day with a 2.5# on a Bandito Bug, cast to the opening in the lily pads you can see over my right shoulder.  Impressed my son because I said last cast and I’m gonna catch one right in the hole… ?

 

Five workdays now between me and the next outing.  ?
