Right after the catch, I texted Danny's fish pic to my buddy who lives 3 blocks from this lake. He was supposed to meet me but got sidetracked. His only reply: Did you club it then chuck it into the woods?

Although I don’t have the heart to kill any fish that puts up such a fight to live I did laugh out loud when I read your buddies response.

Friday was the first day I was able to bass fish this year.  Photo is of second bass I caught, first bass wasn't even a pound.  She was 24.5 inches long, 7.4 pounds caught on a Texas Rig Green Pumkin, Mag Trick Worm.  Very skinny, hope to catch her again later in the year.  Fishing for larger bass was slow.  Lots of small ones.  Most bass were caught in 15- 20 feet of water on T rigs.  A few spinnerbait fish, but couldn't buy a bite on most moving baits.  Very rare for me to fish soft plastics this much, but I have to let the fish dictate what I throw.

I sure hope next year I can start fishing before the spawn.  I don't know why I let a little thing like work get in the way of my bass fishing.

Trust me, even though he wishes they weren't in there, he wouldn't do it either. He likes a laugh.

He got two smaller buck bass additionally.  Proud dad!

Mexico bass fishing is great, but there isn't a 10 pound bass waiting to bite any lure every cast, like some believe.  Like anywhere else it takes lots of work to get a decent bass, and sometimes I get skunked.

I had to get up at 3:00 AM, drive my POS car 3.5 hours to get to the lake Thursday.  I would have gone to another lake, but my car has had some difficulties, and I didn't want to drive that far, and be 30 miles out of cell phone range for three days.  I started fishing at daylight, and didn't land a bass until 9:00 AM.  Landed the big one the next cast,  I fished hard all day for three days, didn't land another bass over 2.5 pounds and I lost so much tackle, the Bait Monkey is still doing his happy dance this morning.   The afternoon winds blew 20 -30 KTS. and started  early at 11:30 AM.  I had to set my tent up after dark, and take it down before daylight every night.  The last time I camped there, the police drove by, saw my tent,, and tried to shake me down for some money even though the place is public, and I have a perfect right to camp there.  I gave them some sodas, and once they found out I was just a crazy, gringo, with a big orange kayak they acted like my best friend.

The lake is a favorite place for the teenagers, in the local village to come and party, so I camp a ways away from the launch- picnic party site, but I still don't want to draw any attention, so I don't put up camp until the party is over, making it a short night sleep on the weekend nights.

Long story short is I love bass fishing in the secluded unknown lakes of Mexico, but it isn't the same experience anglers read about at the first class lodges.  I did have a DD break me off on a barbed wire fence.  Because of that fish, I will be back soon, POS car, cheap tent, and my latest tackle order.

I caught 9 yesterday (Saturday) in 3 hours......but I fished 7 hours.  When it stopped raining I stopped catching bass.   At a certain time I usually tell myself "I'm going home next bass".   That way while waiting until I can fish again I caught a bass on my last cast.  That didn't work out yesterday.  Today I caught 8 in 3 1/2 hours.   I caught one on my last cast, but didn't plan on that being my last cast.  It was getting cloudy and windy.   I landed a dink, then heard a big clap of thunder.  I don't fear anything, but I respect lightening.  When I was 6, (a couple days after my parents have gave me the lightening is dangerous speech) my best friend, his Grandfather and his dog were struck and killed by lightening.  I'm not taking any chances on a lake.  I lost a BIG one today right at the boat.   I'm pretty sure it was a spot.  If it was it would have been a new pb,  and possibly a new NC state record.  My pb spot is 4 pounds 15 ounces.  The NC state record is 6 pounds 5 ounces.  It might have been a largemouth but it fought like a spot, and what I seen of it looked like a spot.   I lost a few more on that lure, then FINALLY decided to look at the hooks.   They weren't sharp at all.  It was a new DT6 out of the package.  I usually look at stuff like that, but during my vacation I've been spending more time fishing and less time preparing.   I sharpened the hooks then caught the fat Largemouth pictured on the next cast.   The spot pictured is from Saturday.  They were the biggest of both days.  I didn't weigh or measure either one,  just snapped a pic and put them back.   Most of them both days were in the backs of creeks.  Yesterday, when I wasn't catching any I was way up the South Fork river.   I guess they liked the smaller creeks better.

Dang it, Woody! You know spots and you know big spots, so it might have been the state record. Certainly a new PB. Heartbreaking.

Walked out back with the panfish setup to see if I could catch some of the bigger bluegill and shellcrackers behind the house. No dice, but did get one little bass that was a fun fight on the light line. 1/16 oz jighead with a junebug/chartreuse curlytail grub, had to bounce it on the bottom for about 10 mins before I finally got him to commit.

My safety would be the biggest concern, you are basically fishing in the wild wild west lol.

Great writeup, thanks for sharing the process!

Great report and great fish Woody, hate to hear about the big fish.

It's my belief that you aren't fishing around big fish if you don't lose a fish occasionally due to failed terminal tackle, or just bad luck.

Alex, the YouTubers that I prefer to watch are the ones who show the lost fish. I can relate to them and I can't trust the ones who only show that every hooked fish is landed.

Caught a beat up 6ish on Ray Bob today mixed in with four other 1-3s. I think she may have been defending a bed. Chatterbait did the heavy lifting. My buddy caught a few 4s too. And the bluebonnets the mower guy ran over the other day are sprouting blooms, so they will come back. It's been a good day

Another small pike day out of me, different lures today. 2 came on a 3/8 oz dirty jigs swim jig black and blue with a rage menace trailer in blue sapphire. 1 came on a fire craw hybrid hunter jr with upgraded owner treble hooks. I even went fishing for squirrels with my sleeper gill, now she rest at the bottom of the pond. That’s my fault 100% got impatient trying to get it out of the tree, I should have finessed it but oh well that’s what lures are for to be bought used lost and bought again lol. The last pike that ate the crank I felt bad for it got one of the treble hooks in the tongue and was bleeding some did what I could and released him. I fished for a hour and a half and there was no floating fish so that made me feel a tiny bit better.

Amen Katie, losing a big fish is such a big part of Bass fishing.   The greatest Bass anglers in the world lose vastly more big fish than me, and that's simply because they are hooking that many more big fish than me.    That said, just last night I was thinking about the two big fish I lost this winter.    I can close my eyes and see those lost fish fights more than I can with the big fish I landed.     The ones that come in the boat just seem like a blur, those lost big fish make you vividly remember all the details, or at least they do for me.

Got some love on a Spro Little Jon 50, Buzzbait, and Shimano big bait.    Tons of follows and strikes, and even a couple lost ones of that Shimano bait.   I think it was bucks just blowing it up out of anger, the ones that were hooked, were on the outside like they were just swiping it.    Easily the most drawing power out of any lure I've owned.
