Incredible genetics and growing conditions. No, just one pond. My meat hooks and typing on a phone is sketchy at best. Incredible genetics and growing conditions. Small ponds always produce the biggest bass from what I’ve seen. You can fish 3 lifetimes and never catch a 10 lber on my home lake. Usually only takes a day or two on cow ponds, my buddy had one growing up that was darn near automatic too many mouths to feed as well as other species in big rivers/lakes 2 Quote
Super User Swamp Girl Posted March 20, 2023 Super User Posted March 20, 2023 @roadwarrior Funniest GIF of all time! @TnRiver46 Your observation would make for a cool thread, along the lines of "What's your ideal size body of water for a DD?" Quote

Definitely something to that. One of our state record bass weighing 12-06 came from a small 3-acre cow pond. 5 Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted March 20, 2023 Super User Posted March 20, 2023 A bit brutal out there today. Post front skies and a 17 mph wind gusting to 25. Those couple nights of hard freezes took out all the algae and plankton that was starting to grow and give the water some color. It was pretty clear today - too clear for as shallow as it is. I’d guess it (vis) close to double my last trip there, plus it hasn’t had a chance to heat back up. Warmer with heavy cloud cover tomorrow, along with the strong winds might help the bite. Was thinking of trying to get the boat out, but based on how it was gusting and swirling today, predicted to be similar tomorrow, that’s not looking too promising. Only managed a few today, but they had good color in that clear water. 16 Quote
Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted March 21, 2023 Super User Posted March 21, 2023 Took 3 days off while a significant cold front blew through, it was still chilly in the mid 40s for most of the day. Water temps were at 56-58 throughout the various parts of the lake. In a very shallow cove I saw 59. Caught about 10 fish after graphing for a few hours to find active fish. One big post spawn that was a threadfin short of 6lbs. Lost a big Spot right at the boat as well. Few other quality fish as well. Still looking for those 5/20lb days that were so frequent in the winter. One small fish came on a MB 110+1 in Sexy Shad, couple on the flashback mini, and then the rest on the Damiki Axe Blade. After somewhere around 130-140 fish the Axe Blade finally lost an eye on one side, it's surely one of those "magical" baits that I wouldn't be talking about to people IRL lol. 14 1 Quote
Super User NorcalBassin Posted March 21, 2023 Super User Posted March 21, 2023 Got a small break between storms and the fish were semi-cooperative. Water has come up 100ft this winter and we're about 110' from full. Water temp 50-52*. Water is usually 8-10' of visibility this time of year but was down to about 2' with all the runoff. Underspin to start off. Another on the underdspin... Spinnerbait... Skinny spot on a senko Pops also picked one up on a senko. Awesome getting a sunny day out on the water! 19 Quote

I smile every time you and your pops post an Alabama Bass from CA. Not only that, but from Smith Lake which is not far away from me. We are linked through Bass genetics my friend ? 5 Quote
Aaron_H Posted March 21, 2023 Posted March 21, 2023 Still struggling this year with size, and between work, weather, and things in my personal life, I think I missed my window for any true giants. Still plenty of time left in 2023 for some big ones, though. This has been about the consistent size of what I've been catching lately. This one yesterday slammed my Chatterbait but decided it fancied an ear piercing more than a meal, I guess. 19 Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted March 21, 2023 Super User Posted March 21, 2023 As I thought, the bite picked up with the second day of warming and the clouds moving in. Winds turned out lighter than expected as they died down to just a breeze after lunch. Probably would have been fine taking the boat out in hindsight - oh, well. Still had a good time; caught 21, mostly on blade bait. Need a few days of rain to let my “tennis elbow” recover a little bit ? Here’s a few… 20 Quote

BigAngus752 Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 First Texas bass. We're in a VRBO on a small private lake/pond in east Texas. Took me all of 10 minutes on the dock to catch a 5-7. I like Texas so far. 20 Quote

I almost didn't go today. There was a fairy big tournament today. I considered going to another lake, but didn't. So, I get to the landing, get out of my truck, put my coat on and think "boy something smells bad". I figured someone bank fishing had left a bucket of shrimp or something sitting around. I'm all alone except for a guy launching a kayak. When I won't be in anyones way I just tie my boat to the dock with a long rope, back the trailer in and "send it". I did.........it ripped the cleat off the dock. (dock is half rotten). Luckily kayak guy saw it, grabbed the rope and pedaled it to me. I offered to pay but he wouldn't accept anything. I drive away from the landing, but he bad smell doesn't go away. Last Sunday I was fishing in the rain. I just threw my wet coat into the back of my truck. The smell was my coat. I had a lighter coat in my boat, but I was about to freeze with it on, so I put the smelly one back on. I had bought a couple Berkley Frittside cranks. Several people told me they were more durable than the DT6's I like. On my THIRD CAST the eyelet pulled out. This caused a BIG backlash. (I rarely backlash) The line on that reel was due to be changed so I just put that reel away. I tied a DT6 on a different reel and heaved it into the wind. For some reason I had the brakes on zero. I got a pretty bad backlash on that one but was able to pick it out. (did I mention that I rarely backlash? LOL) A few cast with it, then I tried my new $42 swimbait. No luck (or backlashes) with it. It was pretty windy so a lure that runs close to the surface probably wasn't ideal today. I pick up the combo with a T-rig. Somehow during my cast I got the line wrapped around the end of the rod. I spiked the t-rig and...........got a pretty bad backlash. (did I mention that I rarely backlash?) I hate getting skunked but figured someone was trying to tell me to go back home. I decided that I was going to catch one bass, then go home. An hour later (and no more backlashes) I finally caught one. I came home, changed line on the reels that needed it and got our camper ready for Monday. I'm going back tomorrow and expect to have a better day. The camper is ready for Monday morning. I'll leave the boat at the campground tomorrow so I won't have to make 2 trips Monday. When we come home from camping I'll leave the boat again, the go fishing the next day, and bring it home. The bass I caught was a nice fat 15 inch Largemouth. I don't think I've ever worked so hard for a single bass. Way to stay with it Woody! A lot of us would have gone home with a bad backlash attitude. You've taught us a lesson......never give up until the skunk is out of the boat! I have an Uncle who owns a 7 acre pond in West Tennessee, and he caught a 13.68 LM a few years ago on a beetle spin, fishing for crappie. He took a picture because he knows how much fisherman trust fisherman! 3 Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted March 22, 2023 Super User Posted March 22, 2023 Best one today fishing Lake Toho after a cold front. We had 16 fish for the day between two of us. Pitching & dragging wild shiners. 20 Quote
The Bassman Posted March 22, 2023 Posted March 22, 2023 Got my best one since last spring. Dark, pre rain conditions had me using my neo pearl Rozante. She weighed 5.74. Also caught several smaller ones before the weather moved in. 20 Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted March 22, 2023 Super User Posted March 22, 2023 Apparently I was fishing the wrong pond again today based on @The Bassman report ? but I’ve got a Rozante on the way from TW, so maybe my luck will change soon - lol. I could only get one on a jerkbait today, so switched back to a couple blade baits and ended up with 10 fishing between lines of passing rain. Reports are for 1”-3” by the time this all ends Saturday, so I’m guessing heavily stained waters will scuttle my TW attempts at enticing a couple bigger fish ? 14 Quote

A little tip with those jerkbaits: all of mine have been slow floaters. I beef up the split rings to get them neutral or even do the slow death sink in cold water. 2 Quote
