Once again another jig fish for me this year over 4lbs, that’s three over 4 lb fish all on the jig this year for me. This one was 4.74 lbs, my pb of the year for me and definitely my pb that has been weighed. Was a nice fight on my medium light casting rod, abu xenon rod  and a curado bfs reel. My bfs setup basically, jig was a beast coast hybrid hustler 1/4 oz in elite craw with a rage chunk in Okeechobee blue. I am starting to feel ok with a jig in my hand now lol, feels good and I am excited.

First ever topwater catch for me—white buzzbait after dusk. Nothing like seeing the lure get pulled down and the line load the rod tip.

Didn’t weigh this fish before releasing (I felt bad after accidentally dropping it on rocks while getting the hook out, and didn’t want to prolong things), but going by feel he was somewhere between 1lb 11oz and 2lb 4oz, comparing how he felt to two others. Going to have to get a lip-grabber to hold on (and weigh) safely.

Water level is 194 ft below full pool and unfortunately all three ramps are now closed on our side of the lake until we (hopefully) get some good winter rain and snow. Made the extra drive over to the only ramp on the lake in a neighboring county... great being out but fishing was pretty slow. My recent purchase of a kayak may have been perfect timing.

Pops with the first fish of the day.

Skinny fella but should be putting on some girth real soon considering all the bait he spit up.

I only fished 3 hours yesterday and won't go at all today.  I've got stuff to do today.    I've also got a sore left elbow the Dr said needs rest.   I caught 6 bass yesterday ranging from 14 to 17 inches.  Didn't weigh any of them.  The 17 incher was skinny.

Interesting morning yesterday. Put in at sunrise and the water was raging from overnight generation and 63 degrees. We floated 4-5 miles with no luck (3 of us). I was throwing the FishLab gizzard shad, a huge bait, and it got rocked. I can tell it’s a smallie and it’s pulling hard. Then I get it near the boat and it’s a nice 3 lb fish but it’s hooked in the head, hence why he was pulling so hard. It kept diving under the boat and slamming the lure against the bottom of the boat, you could hear it. After several jumps I could see the hook tearing a hole and it finally jumped off.

so then we floated another mile or so and as the boat was moving along I was dragging a purple worm and thought I was stuck. Turns out I was stuck to a nice 18” smallmouth that had been captured before

Not the biggest around here but PB for me.  My apologies on the blurriness.  Was shaking from excitement lol.  Didn't have my scale with me.  Guesses on weight?

spacer.pngThis is a great bass! Because it’s the one that beat the skunk! Caught it on a 5” #906 blue/black laminate Senko TR.

But that’s not the whole story. I know there are baby bass and bluegills in this pond, and as there are some good-sized catfish, there’s gotta be some baby cats as well. But I’ve never truly seen scads of baitfish in this pond like I did today. Got on the water just after first light. Had a Zara Spook rigged up and before I made my first cast, I saw several spots where baitfish were breaching the surface being chased. I’ve never witnessed that before here, and yet today it was happening all over the pond…for hours. I tried the Spook. A Whopper Plopper. A Pop Max. A fluke. A paddletail swimbait. A jerkbait. A squarebill (had something take a swipe at it as it hit the water). Several different plastic worms and stickbaits. A Fat IKA. A tube. Nothing until I caught this bass around 11:30. It looked so promising! If you have any suggestions on what I should have tried, let me know.

Also, I did have another bass on the hook with that Senko, but I lost it. The braid-to-leader knot broke. And that was 100% on me. I tied a new leader on during the week. Twice. The first one I cut off and retied another as it didn’t look right. This one I thought was probably ok, but deep down I think I knew it wasn’t up to standards. Lesson learned!

I admire your perseverance and love your joy at landing one after throwing emptying your tackle box. Well done! If I can't catch fish, bait can save the day.

Biggest Smallmouth of the year! A 3lb, 4oz beauty caught this morning on a weightless worm. Amazing power in these fish especially fighting them out of the current.

Heck, yeah, that's a gorgeous fish! And a river fish means it's twice as fun.

Yeah I wish I have small mouth around here. I’ve heard it put up fight lb to lb a lot harder than LMB.

For sure. This fish was peeling drag. I had to put my thumb on the spool to stop the line coming off. Steady pressure with the rod to wear her down to the point where I could regain some lost yardage. Strangely she never jumped. Made me think it was a Channel Cat at first.

were you fishing from the rocky shoreline this day?

Posted

Saturday the weather was near perfect, rain clouds hanging low, nice chop onto the bank, water vis good, all except one thing. The temp dropped 20 degrees from fridays hot humid sunny weather.

Wife and i caught 6 bass from the bank and wading. It was tough fishing and it was crunch time so i throw the berkley kingtail on using a straight worm hook t-rigged and picked up a couple fish. This kingtail has turned out to be my last resort bait this year.

This stretch of the river is between 2 Dams. They have dropped the water level in it by 8 feet to make repairs on the lower Dam.

Now I have access to parts of the river I would have never had bank fishing. This particular spot is by the upper Dam. I am able to walk out on rocks that are normally underwater to fish the current coming out of an electrical plant.

Man that sounds cool. They did something similar here but they wouldn’t allow anyone to walk out near the water when the lake was drawn down. They patrolled it 24 hours a day for a few years. Some thing about native artifacts they were trying to protect

Yeah right, probably picking up all the snagged lures for themselves.

Got out a little early this morning off the bank. Just brought my St. Croix Bass-X ML/XF and Daiwa Revros LT2000 and a few bags of soft plastics. Started with a #906 blue/black laminate Senko weightless TR and got no bites. Switched to an X-Zone True Center Stick in Carolina pumpkin black flake. About the third or fourth cast it got bit close to the bank, missed the hookset and it hit it again. Hard. Set the hook and saw this lol.
spacer.png

I rigged another X-Zone and started working it. It got whacked again. This one did not miss the hook.
spacer.pngWas just shy of 2 lbs. Good fighter. Don’t know what he ran into at one point, but if he won the fight, I’d hate to see the loser!

I'm so behind the times. Almost 2 weeks ago I found a way to sideline myself yet again, and have had to sit it out, so I thought I've been on the DL. As it turns out the DL is so 2017, at least in baseball terms. The DL(disabled list) has been replaced with IL(injured list), and for good reason. My research has lead me to understand to never ever never say "I'm on the DL, or he's on the DL". The former would confuse my friends and loved ones who are hip to the lingo, and the latter might get me socked. Linguistic efficiency isn't my bag anyway, so no more acronyms for me.

It's been two weeks and nothing much has changed, except the water level is even lower. Scary low. It just won't rain here even when thunderstorms are in the forecast. It's still hot as Hades day after day, and the bite is very August-like within casting range. Just a few shorts and several super dinks I let shake off wake/cranks. Back to the ice packs and anti-inflammatories, but it's always good to get some tugs after being away from the action.

Nice LMs!

I always hear it called IR on sports radio, injured reserve. Maybe that’s different than the IL?

also, I’m not surprised that your meteorologist has been swinging and missing. Par for the course

Much hotter and more humid than originally predicted today with a high of 92 and a heat index of 101. However, a passing storm threat brought heavy clouds and a good breeze to the area for about half an hour, so I took advantage and swung on a few - still throwing the jig.
