Latest Catch Pics Thread

Back to my normal routine of fishing before work on remote days and weekends. Fall has been decent so far at the river. Wacky, Ned and T-rigs are getting it done.

Got out today 8-1. Not my best day, whiffed on a couple ,dropped a couple and had a couple whiff on my baits but managed to boat 5, 1 on a buzzbait, 3 on a Spinnerbait, and 1 on a frog that weighed 4-10.

A couple ‘firsts’ yesterday; my first bass on a spinnerbait in over a decade (I just stopped throwing them), and my first bass on a straight monofilament/nylon/copoly setup in over a decade (usually all fluoro on casters except for one braid outfit). Actually caught  ten total; the 75 is my crappie counter from the same trip (mixed bag).

Well josh wins lunker of the day award. He got this nice almost 20” fish with a zoom fat albert in pearl color, heckuva battle 

 

I got a 17” throwing a popper out into the middle of the river, it was a cartwheeling strike I won’t soon forget

Then close to dark I got a 15.5” on a worm  that fought really hard as well

Jersey bassin has been good for me this fall. 2 6 pounders in one week, crazy. One of em definitely my PB. This one hit a pearl Zoom Fluke Jr. on a 3/0 EWG hook (no weight). That smaller fluke really needs to be on light line to get any casting distance. I used 12 lb braid, worked like a charm.

Went to check a Lake Ontario shore spot, where it seems they’re either there or not.  Lots of nibbles on a dropshot, then finally got a hook in one.  No repeat on the 5+ pounders today.  lol

An overnight inch and a half of rain had the ponds stained and high, so I expected a shallow wakebait bite - but the drains weren't flowing, and after one complete pass around the first pond, I had not a single bite. So I went back a couple hours later with the spinning gear and Ned rig, and proceeded to pop 7 real quick down just one side of the same pond sitting just outside the weedline in deeper water before having to head back home. I'll be back tomorrow with spinning gear in hand to make a full circuit 

 

 

Left my usual sun hat at home, so had my regular hat pulled down low to shade my eyes - works well other than looking a little funny

Got to my new favorite culvert today and put on a new pearl white zoom super fluke and on the 2nd cast this freight train clobbered the fluke.

After the initial bite and pull i thought i caught a part of the culvert as this brownie was anchored down and the tug of war to get him landed was the heaviest load i have ever encountered without any weeds involved.

I am thankful to have caught this 5 lb fish and hope she stays away from the fine folks whom like to catch and eat them.

 

The culvert also gave up a nice 4 lb bass, a handfull of 2 lbers and a couple pike.

Hit a tributary creek this morning. First 30 minutes no signs of life after fishing through normally productive water. It was way low and I was just thinking I'd made a mistake when my jig got rocked in a big logjam. Fish was immediately hung, thought it might be a small flathead. A lot of luck, prying on limbs, almost tossing a rod in the water, and thanks to my 20lb InvisX, this 21" tank finally surfaced. 

Caught several more smaller fish. Got cut off by a johnboat with crappie fisherman. Creek is about as wide as 2 of my kayaks laid end to end and they parked crossways on top of a big brushpile back in the creek after they went around me, effectively blocking me off unless I rubbed up against them, not something I was interested in doing a mile up a creek surrounded by nothing. Turned around and fished back to the ramp. Switched up to a baby brush hog to give the fish something different and immediately got positive results, catching several more out of brush I'd already fished with the jig. Dropped it into one tree barely a rod length away and less than a foot of water and it was barely moving when I lifted it. On the hookset, another big fish rocketed out of the water instantly and went over and through some limbs. Took a mix of finesse and manhandling to work the 19.75" fish into the kayak. She was still green though and flopped off my board and back into the water before I got a picture with her on the board.

 MF seems to always bail me out on low wind days. Sunday's supposed to be breezy. I'm counting on a wake bait then. Looks like summer isn't going to end any time soon.

Yesterday @roadwarrior took me fishing on a stretch of the Tennessee River that I've never fished before. As usual, it rained 6 inches (for real) in the two days before we went. Seems like all we need to do to get a flood in my area is to schedule a fishing trip.

 

We got a late start due to extremely dense fog, but a late start is better than not fishing. The fishing action was a slower than we'd hoped, but we managed to catch 6 smallmouth and 1 largemouth. Roadwarrior beat me 4-3...if we count largemouth. ??  We talked to a couple other fishermen who caught nothing so 7 is better than nothing.

 

I wish this part was different, but I missed a big one. I was dragging a rage tail menace, and felt a tug on the line. I set the hook, turned to RW & said, "I'm hung up", but my snag started swimming so I started reeling. He said, "I think that's a good one". I knew he was right, but then it turned and swam straight at me. I reeled as fast as I could, but I couldn't keep up. My lure popped out of the water, and my heart sank. I know I have a lot to learn, but I don't know what I could've done differently. Sometimes the fish just wins, I guess. We know where she lives so we might just pay her another visit.

My heart tried to tell that to my mind, but we all know that drum stay on the line intentionally because they like to laugh at us when they see our faces when we realize our big catch is a drum.

Something about fish that don't get fished for often, they're just wilder when they bite and get stuck.
