After sitting out the hot summer months I've started to go to the lake now and again. The water level at my local lake (Lake Perris) has dropped around 17ft or so from it's June peak. It's in a limbo phase for me as my better spots are either high and dry or a little on the deep side still. I've been looking around for spots and have had some luck here and there from time to time.

Last Tuesday the 19th I went to the lake at 4pm for some quick shore fishing to at least practice some casting. It was the leading edge of a cold front with some decent wind and chop blowing straight in at me. I only fished for just under 1hr as it got dark pretty quickly and was a little on the nippy side.

I wound up catching 5 Bass in a 45 minute time span. Overall it was a great 45 minutes or so of fishing. All caught on a rattle trap that I've since lost.

Here's the kicker! 6.3 lbs and I was lucky enough to have a fellow angler around to take a couple of quick photos. I would have like to get a better photo or two of her, but she was a bleeder. I looked inside her mouth before releasing her and could find where or even see any damage. I would have hated to keep her, but would have if I didn't think she would make it.

Caught a funny lookin' dink yesterday afternoon. Everything I know to look for points to a largemouth, but the color's like nothing I've ever seen.

I know a little about snakes and stuff, but not all that much about fish. Is it amelanistic, maybe?

Looks like it’s been in open, clear water. The more they are under cover or in dark water they are darker.

Interesting. I would characterize the water I caught it in as "murky," at best. And I'm probably being real charitable with that.

I've seen how wide the color variance can be with LMB, but nothing like this before.

I catch a lot of pale bass in muddy water

Looks like it came out of cold, muddy water to me. It's 100% a largemouth bass though.

Looks more like cold water bass to me; I seem to get them that color late in the season and right after ice is off.

Managed 10 today fishing the middle of the day this time. Still not a cloud in the sky, and slick calm much of the day .Low 70s.

Very tough bite the first 3 hours- 4 fish. Tried all kinds of baits but all they wanted were zoom super flukes in Watermelon red, and “ something” bream- kind of silver with blue and red flake. The bite picked up again coming back on the west shoreline - got 6 the last hour.D8840E65-6C64-4145-9920-92E864B7EB50.jpeg9820C059-1B9B-4527-AFE3-CE95914B287C.jpegF0A27C42-3BD9-4FA6-BD12-4A3F947AA917.jpeg02D47729-B6DC-4146-AAE9-91EE70D7E0F4.jpeg6C83F715-74B1-408D-A51D-134C40288BCD.jpeg

One of the craziest white bass days I’ve ever seen and I’ve seen some things..............

we got well over 100 before 10:30 am, they were still biting when we left. We went to go shoot clay pigeons on a friends farm and they decided to check a pond that never has ducks on it...... and there were 20 or so! One of my buddies dropped two gadwall, love the holidays! Cast n blast

I love to catch white bass but my only real opportunity is in the spring during their spawning run in our local river. They hit and fight so hard for their size.

It’s kind of weird, they run upriver in fall here also. The spring run they go way up into shallows but in fall they go up pretty far and seem to stop in deep holes and stay there all winter long. I’ve been known to have a fish fry darn near every night in winter and I give my neighbors a lot.  We caught them right below a dam today, 30,000 cfs.

Weird . Looks just like some of the fish I catch in my fairly clear , shallow lake in open water.

You don't ever see any cold water down there either to have any experience with it. Those Florida fish usually seem to be much darker colored than fish about everywhere else with all the vegetation and tannic water.

I agree with that for the most part. I still occasionally get a light colored fish like that. They have kind of a slight bronze color to them. Maybe there’s another reason I don’t know about. They’re not rare , but not common. Always catch those out away from cover.

The fish I’ve caught in murky water here almost have no color. Just kind of gray.

There are some very clear lakes about an hour away from me. Those fish are light colored too, but have distinct LM patterns, especially  the lateral line markings.

The Tannic water fish here are very dark like you said.

And you’re right about me not being used to cold water! Hopefully it stays that way!

Been spending most all fall crappie fishing, but finally picked up the bass sticks again this week before things froze up. Water temps in our smaller reservoirs at 42 degrees, and just need one good cold snap to lock things up. Ponds are already flirting on the edge, and larger reservoirs only a couple degrees warmer at around 44 deg. Been tossing a mix of blade baits, jerkbaits and small plastics to nab a few from both the boat and the bank. Weather forecast looks like I'll get another shot or two late this week :) Here's a few pics...

Long range maps are showing above norm through mid month. Ponds have been good lately. Got a 5.22 last tues. Looks like it's gonna be another 12 month bass year.

Locked in my 12 months of bass today.  33* and wind made for a tough hour and a half but caught two 4lbr's shown here and a 2.5.

Got to sneak out twice on my days off this week. Met my buddy right after I got off work to close the lake down for the year. It wasn't fast fishing, and they weren't big (never are out there), but good variety including a white channel cat and a black nose crappie.

Monday I was by myself at the power plant. It wasn't as cold as I've fished in, but haven't gotten acclimated to it yet this winter so the 25* air with 10-15 mph winds were biting. It was a grind all day, but I managed to find 10 biters, all on a Shad Rap or Ned Rigged Trout Trick.
