WDE Posted December 5, 2017 Posted December 5, 2017 Interesting time today. I went exploring other parts of the pond I’ve been wading in lately, felt like I was walking in quicksand. My knee-high boots were basically pointless, as it rained last night and the pond was up considerably. I managed to stumble on a sunken branch and puncture my boot, but thankfully it didn’t pierce my skin—it bruised immediately. And I also caught what I think might be a bowfin(can anyone confirm?). He was fun to bring in, and I’m super glad I didn’t try to lip him when I got him close. Also happy that I had my grippers nearby, put him on the scale for fun—3.2lbs. 12 Quote

Looks like a bowfin aka grinnel to me. I've only caught 2 but that's a spittin image except for size 1 1 Quote

ohboyitsrobby Posted December 6, 2017 Posted December 6, 2017 I've caught a bunch of gar on the river behind my house. On everything from a beetle spin( that I was actually throwing to avoid the gar) to a fluke to an a rig. During summer it's harder to avoid them than it is to catch the bass. Quote

No scale or measuring tape(didnt have my normal bag,nor did I expect this size catch). Laid her down for just a second so I could take a pic to show scale. She swam off beautifully and I packed up and drove home feeling high. I've had that feeling before, but you gotta stay after it! When one big girl eats that usually means more big girls are eating!!! 5 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted December 16, 2017 Super User Posted December 16, 2017 Got two on the first two docks , both on a 10 inch watermelon seed ole' monster. This one was the better one. Not another bite after that. 15 Quote

Just because they swim off doesn't mean they survive. 3 1 1 Quote
AndrewJ Posted December 17, 2017 Posted December 17, 2017 Went out with a buddy Friday morning for about 4 hours. I caught three nice spots, Only two pictured as I out-caught my buddy 10-1 and he was no longer interested in taking my picture, haha. 1st picture - 2.5 lbs spot caught drop shotting a tree. 2nd picture - 2 lbs spot dead sticking a roboworm 13 Quote

Bass have a thin, protective slime coating over the whole of their bodies, shielding them from harmful bacteria and parasites. This slime coat gets removed through contact with hands, boat decks, grass and fish rags. In addition, boat decks are usually fairly hot and can actually burn the side of the fish. Many times the bass is not flopping because it's trying to get away, its flopping because its getting too hot. 1 Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted December 21, 2017 Super User Posted December 21, 2017 A little skim ice on the ponds, a cool sunset, and some biting bass makes for a good evening... 21 Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted December 22, 2017 Super User Posted December 22, 2017 Got in what will certainly be the last open water boat trip of 2017 for me given the Polar Vortex that's about to hit us beginning this weekend. Was able to swing on several, and most came back with fish attached Good news is today was the shortest day of the year, so things are all uphill from now until next summer! A few pics from today... 21 Quote

Blades or jigs? I did pretty good on blades yesterday. At this time of year I wonder how much lure choice matters as long as presentation puts the bait in the strike zone long enough. Quote

I always carry all 3 of those baits though in the cold water period. Quote
The Bassman Posted December 22, 2017 Posted December 22, 2017 Much appreciated @Team9nine. You've really upped my game since being on this site the past year. Have a good Christmas 1 Quote
hawgenvy Posted December 23, 2017 Posted December 23, 2017 I've been catching plenty of 1 to 3 pounders but no big ones for many weeks. Then tonight I pulled this babe out of a hat. From the bank. My stupid scale failed, but the girl couldn't have been less than eight pounds. She was dripping eggs. A friendly and duly impressed golfer, visiting from Canada, snapped the photo for me. Caught her on a 1/4 oz Strike King Heavy Cover Swim Jig with Rage grub trailer. 19 1 Quote

Started out forgetting my wallet and didn't realize it till I got to the gas station. Then I forgot the motor mate on the motor after launching. Fog was insane so we lingered close to the ramp. Finally the fog lifts around 10am and we go to our first spot. I go to get on the trolling motor and it gives me the good news that my batteries took a dump on me. They were under warranty so I go and get them swapped out. Get back to the lake around 1pm and launch. Idle a good ways out but the boat won't plane. I realize i forgot the plug! After another trip to the ramp to fix that we finally got on some decent fish at the spot we've been trying to get to all day! D**n! Way to stick with it! I would probably have made it through retrieving the wallet, maybe the fog, definitely not the batteries. I wouldn't have gone back. You deserve that fish. Quote
WDE Posted December 25, 2017 Posted December 25, 2017 Weather has been trash lately. Plus I work retail and during crazy season it’s been keeping me from doing what I love. But it I did get on my inlaws’ farm pond for an hour or so today for some Christmas Eve bass. I hope everyone has Merry Christmas! 14 Quote
hawgenvy Posted December 26, 2017 Posted December 26, 2017 Took my cousin Dax bank fishing today. He caught more fish than I did, using a Texas rigged worm. The best part was watching him set the hook like a pro! 17 Quote
Super User everythingthatswims Posted December 26, 2017 Super User Posted December 26, 2017 Got out for a couple hours yesterday evening and caught a few COLD river bass. Water temps are in the upper 30s but it's not that hard to catch them when you know where they live and are willing to go sllllowwwww. They were hitting the bait when it had been stationary for 5-10 seconds. One on a finesse football jig and 4 on a tiny little tube. I think this makes 4 years in a row now that I've bank fished that river on Christmas day and caught bass, somewhat of a tradition now! 16 Quote
