MoeC Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 I swear by them! The only thing working this morning was a black buzz bait. All season long I noticed most of my hook-ups were on the trailer hook. This morning I was 4-for-4 and the last one the trailer hook got the fish on the outside, under the mouth (foul hooked). The fish managed to flap off the hook and fall in the water. However, the trailer hook was still attached. Being lazy (and it was raining) I opted to fish without a trailer. I went 0-for-2 and put a trailer on. Sure enough I went 2-2 with the trailer being the only hook in the mouth. My preference is a snelled hook (with heavy braid) that I attach with a simple loop around the lure's hook. I don't like the slip over trailers. (The one I lost today was a slip over) Quote
Super User Wayne P. Posted June 10, 2014 Super User Posted June 10, 2014 I have seen situations where a trailer hook attached to a trailer hook is needed. Even using a treble hook for a trailer hook when smallmouth fishing. Quote
Bobby Uhrig Posted June 10, 2014 Posted June 10, 2014 Let the fish dictate on weather to use a trailer hook or not.If the fish are slapping at the bait and not fully committing to it-then yes take advantage of the trailer hook-otherwise no trailer hooks for me-I USE TRAILER HOOKS WHEN IM FISHING A TOURNAMENT--When every fish counts- At times the trailer hook catches debris and acts like a rudder-pain in the butt- All depends on your mood and the fishes mood. 1 Quote

Super User rippin-lips Posted June 10, 2014 Super User Posted June 10, 2014 I never use one on my cavitrons and I don't notice a difference. Occasionally I'll miss a fish but it's like 1/10 really. Quote
MoeC Posted June 10, 2014 Author Posted June 10, 2014 Does anybody have a preference for the type of trailer hook? I like a snelled hook instead of the rigid slip overs Quote

I like a snelled hook instead of the rigid slip overs Eagle claw 254. I use the clear safety plastic sleeve that came on the hooks of some of DSGs spinnerbaits and buzzbaits, and slice them with a razor blade to make plastic doughnuts. works great, never had one fall off. I'd come home with a 98 on a test, and my dad would ask "what happened to the other 2 points, so I'm traumatized, everything comes in the boat... Quote
Super User Marty Posted June 10, 2014 Super User Posted June 10, 2014 Does anybody have a preference for the type of trailer hook? I just use the ones ones that are labeled as trailer hooks. Most of my buzzbait fish have come on the main hook, but I've caught just enough on the trailer hook only that I have to use one to have any confidence. Quote
Mr Swim Jig Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 I also fish Cavitron buzz Baits and never use a trailer hook and very rarely miss a fish.... Quote
speed craw Posted June 11, 2014 Posted June 11, 2014 The only time I don't use a trailer hook is when im around heavy grass or reeds etc . Other than that you're chances of that one in a million fish become 50 / 50 vs significantly higher odds with a trailer hook . As for size of trailer hook sizes depends on spinner bait hook size generally 2/0 to 1/0 Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted June 11, 2014 Super User Posted June 11, 2014 I also fish Cavitron buzz Baits and never use a trailer hook and very rarely miss a fish.... Yeah and for me when I do,it's usually my fault anyhow. Too quick on the hookset or they blow up on it right as I'm about to lift it out of the water. Quote
Bobby Uhrig Posted August 21, 2019 Posted August 21, 2019 When designing the Cavitron -I made sure to use a larger hook. I also set the hook back in the mold to create more gap between the blade and point of the hook. I truly believe that extra gap between the blade and point of the hook increases hookup rations -therefor not needing the trailer hook- BUT I take advantage of a trailer hook fishing tournaments - Like I said -Tournament +Trailer Hook Fun fishing None 1 Quote
