greentrout Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 It's A Humdinger spinnerbait made in Baton Rouge, La is not expensive and puts bass in the boat. Put a smile on my face a few times. 1 Quote
Super User Catt Posted June 12, 2014 Super User Posted June 12, 2014 Depth & speed has nothing to do with the spinner bait, they are controled by the angler. KVD & Clunn do not buy spinner baits, so cost doesn't mean a thing to them. The Humdinger rolls when reeled fast & a 2# bass will bend them out of shape. Quote

There are many factors on depth and speed and they all come down to where you want the spinnerbait to run in the water column. Weight, blade size and line size are all factors. Theres a reason I have 3/4oz-1oz+ spinnerbaits made with specific blade size to be fished on #20-25lb mono. Quote
Super User Catt Posted June 12, 2014 Super User Posted June 12, 2014 Spinner bait speed & depth is controlled by how fast or slow you reel along with how high or low you holp your rod tip. I can slow roll a 1/4 oz spinner bait down to 15' easily, I can burn a 1 oz spinner bait just under the surface. 1 Quote
Super User Crestliner2008 Posted June 12, 2014 Super User Posted June 12, 2014 I've always relied on Fleck Spinnerbaits. These lures have been around for over 40 years and still going strong. Very cost effective and durably made. You can look at them at Northern Bass Supply: http://www.nbswebstore.com/cgi-bin/web_store/web_store.cgi?view=products&cart_id=2205505_2516&product=Spinnerbaits&manufact=FLECK%20WEED-WADER%20SPINNERBAITS 1 Quote

greentrout Posted June 13, 2014 Posted June 13, 2014 It's A Humdinger story. I like the small Colorado and Indiana blades model in white and white and chartreuse. I fish it at moderate speed in stumps , brush and anything I can bump off and run by close. I think it would be difficult to helicopter the Willowleaf model. Yep, they sometimes are mangled but that's because they are so enticing to the bass. I can live with that. http://www.louisianasportsman.com/printer_friendly.php?id=1707 1 Quote
SkullCrusher Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 I was curious as to why people spend so much for spinnerbaits. I bought one spinnerbait the other day for around $7 and I bought three of the dollar brand. With buzzbaits I can understand why after using a cheap one compared to the $4 one I have, but with the spinners the only real differences I see is the color of the skirt, skirt style, and blade shine. Are they more durable or does the better shine attract more fish or is it just a confidence thing? I am fairly new to bass fishing and mainly use spinnerbaits. Personally I have caught more fish off of Strike King baits and they have been better in size/weight. More expensive brands are more durable and flow straighter than the cheaper ones. Another thing I have noticed is the different size and shape of the blades on the bait. This does indeed change the flow of the spinner bait, and I have found that the ones that look like thin jigging spoons look the best. Hopethis helped ya... Quote
SkullCrusher Posted December 2, 2015 Posted December 2, 2015 Custom paint, Wire tied by hand, high quality swivels, the ability to choose your weight and blade size all for $5.00? For me nothing else compares to Siebert Outdoors. Love the blades on it Quote
Super User bigbill Posted December 2, 2015 Super User Posted December 2, 2015 I use Mann's classic 1/4oz spinnerbaits double gold Indiana blade because of the closed eye. (Snap swivels) My setup is, White,,,blue glimmer skirt, white 4" mister twister double tail grub with 2/0 trailer hook. Chartruese,,,hot chartruese skirt, chartruese 4" mister twister grub, 2/0 trailer hook. I even use the 1/8oz to 3/16oz cheap closed eye single Colorado blade with the setup about. My point is for me it's the setup that matters. This works for me from shore. The smaller spinnerbaits. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted December 2, 2015 Super User Posted December 2, 2015 I have bought good inexpensive spinnerbaits and bad ones . The first thing I look at is the swivel. If its a bad swivel I dont buy it unless its a quarter and I want the skirt . I like to let spinnerbaits fall and cheap swivels will not allow the blade to spin . I also prefer single willow blades b\because I think they fall better .I cant find them anywhere so I gave a co angler a lot of lead and hes going to make me some. I've had Terminators that came in upside down and they couldnt be tuned . I had to add weight to the hook shank to make them usable . Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted December 2, 2015 Super User Posted December 2, 2015 The hook needs to be sharp, the weight needs to be right, the wire needs to hold up, but really,... It's all about the blade, about the blade, no trouble... I change the blades out on most spinnerbaits depending on what I'm doing . When it's right, it's like they have to bite it. I would be happy to fish nothing but spinnerbaits, and wake baits, and jerk bats, and frogs, and, never mind . Quote
Super User bigbill Posted December 2, 2015 Super User Posted December 2, 2015 You will get good at bending the wire straight again. Quote

Super User the reel ess Posted December 2, 2015 Super User Posted December 2, 2015 My very first spinnerbaits were BPS's bargain basement Uncle Buck brand and I caught a bunch of fish on them for several years. I bought one in white and chart in every combo of blades they had. Alas, they finally replaced that line with a one on par with premium brands with better paint, contoured shaped heads and realistic eyes. I still have the old ones and they still catch fish. I doubt it matters if a spinnerbait runs a little sideways. I'm usually not burning it like that because I want it to bump things in the water. Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted December 2, 2015 Super User Posted December 2, 2015 I have caught many solid bass on $1 spinnerbaits. They are great to use in areas your worried to lose your expensive spinnerbaits. Quote

I can tell you that I've spent up to $15 bucks on a single spinnerbait (remorse followed) but the reason I now exclusively fish War Eagle is because the blades spin for days right out of the package, every time. They aren't fancy baits in any respect but the skirts, blades, and hooks are top notch. War Eagle has served me very well. I can't say enough good things about them. I pay $5.96 at Walmart for them as that's the only local place here that carries them now. Sportsmans, Gander, and Dicks do not carry them for some odd reason. Quote

ZoomFluke Posted June 4, 2021 Posted June 4, 2021 Just got done with an evening of fishing at a small 30 acre lake. It was cloudy, and just got done raining or still drizzling from time to time. So of course I bust out the spinner bait. It is the infamous $1 wal mart spinner. I saw about 10 largies close to the shore and the bass were definitely active, in shallow water, & on the move. As the light got dimmer I used the spinner exclusively and every time I brought it in I could see water ripples from fish dashing away from my lure. The spinner scared the crap out of em! It was functioning fine and had good action and spin on the drops. The bass I saw were around 2-3 pound range. That being said, I can definitely see how the choice, range, style, size, etc of spinner bait can be important. I don’t know if it was too big or if I just suck at spinners but I do think the size of the bait may have been to big in this case. Also used a heddon baby torpedo and had no success. Think I just need to find the right lures (type, brand, color, style etc) for the right time and body of water. Not to mention more practice. Just wanted to share that. Tnx for the insight everyone.
