Yesterday we stopped by Dick's and I wandered over to the fishing department to look at rods. Noticed a section with all their new 2014 rods and found a 7' spinning rod for $15 so I grabbed it. It's a Daiwa Sweepfire 702 mfs rod with these specs:

   Model                                            Length

Number           Power       Action     (Feet)      Pieces     Line Wt. (Lb.)     Lure Wt. (Ounces)     No. Guides
 SWC 702MFS MH                F           7'               2               6 - 14                  1/8 - 3/4                       6

It's fiberglass, not graphite and I know it's not a high dollar rod by any means but I'm at the point in my life where my 16 year old son keeps grabbing my good Fenwick HMG casting rods and I'm hoping that this new one will tempt him more and make him quit using the good ones. But now I need a reel for my it. I don't have any problem with spending more money on this reel, say top out around $80.

So what would be a good fit for this rod? I've heard good things about Okuma and looked (online) at an Avenger - B at Academy and yesterday I played with a couple different ones at Dick's but nothing rang my bell. I didn't like the ABU-GARCIA Cardinal STX at all but the Revo I really liked. I just didn't want to spend that much money on a reel for a $15 rod. I'm a longtime Mitchell fan but I'm not so sure about their newer offereings. I had an old 308 about 8 years ago that just kind of fell apart after a couple years of light use and I just got a bad taste in my mouth for them.

I plan on putting Braid on this combination and use it for frogging and just general use.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I would recommend a Pflueger President. It's

$50-$60 and is a great reel. I bought one this year and won't go back.

Yeah, can't go wrong with Pfluger's.  I have a Surpeme XT, and it is higher up the $$ ladder.  But, compared to other reels that have the same features, it is really difficult to beat a Pfluger.

Good luck!

I have a Supreme but for your budget I would also recommend a President without hesitation. Great bang for buck, considering it can be had for ~50$ you can save that extra 30 for some more tackle  :respect-059:

X2 the President, I also like Less at the same price point, I can normally get them for $49.99 with extra spool. I'm not sure which I like best my Presidents or Lew's it's a toss up for me.

I lost count, X5 or X6 for the President. I purchased one after reading countless positive reviews and mentions on these forums, and really couldn't complain about a thing! It's got 10# PP Braid and handles like a dream compared to anything I've used before.

I've had Shimano's my entire life and just about all of them (not saltwater reels) up to the Stradic Ci4. Just recently I purchased a Pflueger President 30 and man... as many have already posted here, you just can't beat it! It is smooth as anything, apparently by all the reviews I read as well, they last, it's lighter than comparably spec'd Shimano's and as far as $$$... WELL CHEAPER than Shimano's. Don't get me wrong, I'm not hating on Shimano's nor am I switching out all of mine for Pflueger's. But after buying this President, I AM going to get at least one more.

The bail broke on one of my Shimano Sahara's and for the price of the actual part including shipping, I can almost get a President. Like someone already mentioned, Dick's has the mail in rebate for the President and if you shop at Dick's ever, you can get their $10.00 off coupon and use that as well. So you'll pay $59.99 get $10 back by rebate and use a Dick's $10.00 coupon and end up paying $39.99 for an incredible reel. (I have $10 off with my scorecard as well so the one I'm buying next weekend will cost me $29.99) How on EARTH could anyone pass that up! :respect-059:

Anything Shimano in a 2000 or 2500 size.

Match the reel's specs with those stamped on your new rod (line test and bait weight parameters).

Take rod with you to tackle store and have the reels you are considering put on your rod to see how they feel and the rod's balance.

Let us know what you decide to get.

Well guys, my sons got me the Pflueger President 6935B reel for Father's Day! It's completely encased in it's clear, impact resistant, bombproof, titanium outer protective shell (what in the world is UP with manufactu rers today and how they package stuff????) so I haven't broken through yet but before I do i'm wondering if I should opt for the 6940 model or not. The rod will handle 6-14 lb line and the 6935 handles 10 lb max mono and 14 lb max on braid. The 6940 OTOH, will carry 12 lb max mono and 20 lb max braid. My wife said that all Dick's had was the 6935 so i'd probably have to special order it from them or return it and go somewhere else to get the 40. I just had in my mind to use 12 lb test on the setup which the 35 will do but the 40 would allow me more options. Just wondering if the 40 would be too big for that rod. I have not handled any of the president's line yet but my oldest son (16 yrs old) said the one they picked up is real smooth.

I haven't used that specific reel but you can use 12 lb test on the size you have. the line ratings are to give you an idea of capacity. If you are worried it might not hold enough you can use braid or a small diameter mono like sunline supernatural

For me the 40 size felt too big, I have a SupremeMGX  35 size. Just depends how much line you want to put on it. You technically can put heavier line on it, it just won't have as much of it on there.

You might be out of luck anyway.  I have 2 grandsons old enough to fish.  One likes spinning reels and won't use a baitcast reel.  The other likes baitcast reels and won't use a spinning reel.  The MSRP of the combo the youngest is using (he is the one that likes b/c reels) was $400.  I seldom buy new, and when I do it isn't at full price so the outfit didn't cost me that much, but still.........  :sad78:.

Yeah, I guess I took things a little too literal. I guess the fishing reel police won't come out and arrest me for having 14 lb line on a reel that the mfr says is rated for 12 lb!! And like I said I planned on putting braid on it anyway. I may swing by BP this week and check out a 40. I'm sure they've got one on display. Then I can make a more informed decision.

My next question is, do I need to put some kind of backing on the reel of mono or fluorucarbon before putting the braid on? This will be my 1st experience with braid so I need some schooling on it. If so, how much of what type?

Thanks guys!

I always use a few wraps of teflon tape for plumbing or electrical tape and straight braid but i have used some cheap mono for backing in the past. If you go with backing instead of the tape it doesnt take much. I always just reeled on enough so i couldnt see the spool

The president is by far the best in it's price range. Done!

I just use electrical tape. It's easy and I always seem to have a roll around.

Pflueger President - I've got three different sizes - they're smoother than my Abu Revo SX - for which I could have bought 3 more Presidents.....
