ABW Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 How do you guys like this rod? What do you use it for? How does it handle 1/4 oz, 3/8 oz, and 1/2 oz jigs? Quote
Super User BASSclary Posted June 9, 2014 Super User Posted June 9, 2014 I have a 673, so FWIW, close enough to me. 1/4 with trailer is about the sweet spot, 3/8 will push it, (unless your just pitching), but I wouldnt throw 1/2 on it. I also dont really like the length for jigs. I would opt for a longer rod, atleast 7' , especially if your from the shore. 1 Quote
robster80 Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 i love it. super sensitive and light. right now usin mine mostly for light t-rigs and senkos. paired up with new curado. having fished a jig with it yet tho Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted June 9, 2014 Super User Posted June 9, 2014 Unless you are getting a great deal on it, then I'd spend the extra cash and grab an endurance. It's a much better rod for only a little bit more. Has better guides and blank. Quote

Arv Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 Like BASSclary said, I wouldn't throw 1/2oz jigs on it. I would look for a heavier, longer rod for that. The 683 is a very versatile stick. I think I threw just about everything I have on it at one point or another. 1 Quote

It's basically got buzzbait duty at all times at this point in the spring. Quote

Does the 723 handle 1/2 jigz + 1/2 hollow frogs in light cover pretty well? Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted June 9, 2014 Super User Posted June 9, 2014 I have 2 of the 723's. It's such a great all purpose rod. It's rated up to 3/4 so it'll throw a 1/2oz jig but with a trailer you are getting towards the top of the rating. I still have no troubles throwing them though. It doesn't feel overloaded to me. The next choice is the 714. Another great rod but not so much for lighter stuff like 1/4. I throw frogs, jigs,c rig, heavier Tx rig on mine. Quote

Arv Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 Yeah. I don't remember the weights. I mostly throw 3/8 spinners so that's probably what I threw on it haha Quote

skeletor6 Posted June 15, 2014 Posted June 15, 2014 I have this Powell max 683c that you are mentioning. There's actually an old review about it on tackletour believe it or not and I agree with their findings. http://www.tackletour.com/reviewpowell683cxfastpg2.html I disagree about needing to bump up to the endurance line. This rod does not leave much left to be desired. Don't get me wrong, it does not fish like my NRX 803c, however, for what I paid for it I am more than happy. This rod is an excellent utility rod. It does just about everything that I throw at it (within reason). Its rated as extra fast, I find the action to not be as fast as some other XF rods I own. I would say it is a little slower. I dislike the lack of a foregrip, but that is a personal preference issue. With the light CH50mg it balances well and is a light rod overall. The sensitivity is well above par for its price point. What I find to be the best thing about this rod is its versatility. I can do just about any technique within the 1/4-1/2oz range. That is the upside about this not having a true XF tip. It can handle lipless cranks, spinnerbaits, t-rigs, jigs, jerkbaits, topwater etc. etc. It is a utility rod. I put monofilament line on it and let it cover techniques that my other rods aren't dedicated for. This rod finds a solid place within a lineup of higher quality rods in my lineup. I don't think you can go wrong with this rod. 1 Quote
