technician799 Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 Hello everyone, this is my first post here so sorry if this may be in the wrong place. Anyways today I purchased some berkley nanofil. This is my first time using this sort of line. Ive been reading it may be more visible to fish which is kind of getting my hopes down on catching anything on it. But I've also read people that have great success with it without using a leader or anything. I bought the green nanofil not the white so I think that would be less visible. Any thoughts? Also want to mention im no tournament fisherman...just fishing on the weekends when im off work so I just wanted to experiment with this stuff. Should have just stayed with what I had lol Quote
bass1980 Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 I tried their 17lb on my Daiwa Steez even though they are recommended for spinning reels just because I was throwing lures around 1/4 or slightly under. Hoping to get distance with it. Well let me say I didn't make any comparision but I felt the line was pretty good for casting. However managing it was a nightmare. Felt like plastic to me and line that doesn't get used much near the end of a long cast was really bad. It seems like the line needs to be broken in but only the first 10 feet or so could get broken in. Then after that it seemed stiff and hard. So on a long cast I kept having trouble with little over runs. Even when I didn't seems like the layer below my top layer wanted to pop out. It's hard to explain but I'll just say I pulled off that expensive line and trashed it. Now I have half a spool left sitting pretty in my cabinet. If you're asking for suggestion on spinning reels then...disregard my comments lol. Quote

I know everyone's different but have any opinions on best line brand/lb for spinning reels? I have a micro spin with the nanofil and a medium spinner with regular 12# mono. I have mono or floro line on all my baitcasters but I use the spinning reels for spin baits. Like I said I just wanted to experiment with the nanofil lol. Quote

Super User QUAKEnSHAKE Posted June 7, 2014 Super User Posted June 7, 2014 Find a knot that works well and I think its very good line. Ive used 6# for a couple years now and its still good shape. The knot I tie I get 9# strength. I dont use leader and fish very clear water 15' vis. The sensitivity is outstanding better than tightline braid. Its not a supeline that is underrated on strength and thats where I think people find fault. They think no stretch and so it must work like braid well it doesnt. Im working with a true 6# line that doesnt stretch so I back off drag dont horse in the fish play it more. I at times use a moderate action rod for some forgiveness. I caught many fish this past week with the white in clear water senko fishing. I too will be getting the green nano Im down to a little more than a very good cast worth of line. Ill add that my hook-up % at distance is much better with nano than my 10 or 12# FC super sniper even when the fc line is used with stouter rod. couple 3# caught 1st pic caught this week another catch out a good 100' when hooked Quote

I'll give it some testing this weekend. I can't remember what # I bought either 12 or 17. If you dont mind me asking what knot do you use? Ive read its slicker so I dont think my improved clinch knot will do the trick like it does on mono line. Quote

Basically the same uni knot I use for fc and braid just double the line is the only other step. I leave about 1/4' tag. I have not lost a fish with this knot. Now I will say stay away from rock it is just slightly more abrasion resistant than braid but that not good even so. Quote

I always have the loop that won't pull tight. But when I first spooled up the line I did tie an improved clinch and it held strong. I pulled and pulled and finally the line broke, but above the knot not at the knot itself 1 Quote
