Super User Montanaro Posted June 6, 2014 Super User Posted June 6, 2014 I'm going fishing Saturday with my dad and today I had the chance to do a little fishing after work with my buddy so I decided to work on finesse fishing with my spinning setup as it is a weak part of my game. So I take my 7'm ugly stick with 12lb mono and do some drop shotting and shakey heading... It was awful. I felt like I was fishing with a noodle (or more aptly a whip). I've been using BC setups for the last couple years and buy quality components and now I feel like I have to sell all my ugly sticks. I knew for a while they weren't great but would get me by...and now that I am by I wonder how I ever managed to use them! The point is...I ...want(need?)...a new spinning rod for finesse purposes that won't break the bank and want to know how I should upgrade (maybe I can sell my uglys for the rod). Quote
Super User J Francho Posted June 6, 2014 Super User Posted June 6, 2014 If you've grown accustomed to casting rods, and want a spinner that shares many of those characteristics, take a look at this one from Pinnacle. After two seasons, it's still one of my favorites. http://www.bassresource.com/fishing_lures/pinnacle-DHC5-performa-review.html Quote
Mike2841 Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 I've been using a at croix premier 7 ml for drop shots, love it. I use it a lot for finese/trick worms too Quote
jonnyblazex Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 If you are going the bottom contact finesse route with spinning, or even baitcast, you need a sensitive rod. A ugly stick is about as sensitive as a slap in the face - BEFORE IT HAPPENS. When I got serious, and wanted to upgrade my game from my Ugly stick, I picked up a 6'6 med action ex fast action spinning rod from Scheels. Its the Guide Series rod, and it is Very sensitive. It was so much more sensitive and firm than the ugly stick, I couldn't tell you. It was on sale for $75, but retail was 125. It came with a lifetime warranty, and has not given me one problem to this day. Since then, I thought, what would the best shaky head /drop shot / finesse setup on the market be like? I had a little money to blow at the time, so I decided to pick up a top of the line G Loomis NRX 6'10 Mag Med Ex Fast spinning rod, and paired it with a lightweight Shimano Stradic Ci4+ 2500. This is my most expensive setup. It is perfect 100% in my opinion. The sensitivity and action is unmatched, as well as the weight and components although you pay for it. Im not saying you have to pay really big bucks and get the best rod ever, but spend what you can to get something good, as best as you can get. That 75 dollar rod still gets the job done, and I would highly recommend it to start out with, it is really all you need. Quote
Super User Raul Posted June 6, 2014 Super User Posted June 6, 2014 Ugly Sticks are that, fugly !, I'd take a Shimano Clarus for upgrading without breaking the bank any time over an Ugly Stick. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted June 6, 2014 Super User Posted June 6, 2014 I'd take a look at some rods in the St. Croix lineup. They have a series for about every price range. I'd suggest any of the 6'8" M/XF rods but if you can swing it, I'd look at the Legend Tournament Bass Line. Very nice and sensitive and also very well balanced. The other great thing about it is it's a very versatile stick. It's listed as a wacky rig rod which it excels at, but it's also very good for drop shotting as well as most other finesse techniques. Super User BassinLou Posted June 6, 2014 Super User Posted June 6, 2014 On my last remaining spinners. I have a premiere on one and a Carbonlite on the other. I have my stradic CI4 on the CL. The sensitivity, weight, and strength will surprise you on that rod. Quote
Super User MCS Posted June 6, 2014 Super User Posted June 6, 2014 bps carbonlite is a great rod for the reasonable price. Super light, sensitive and comfortable to fish, plenty of umf to set hooks too. Quote
Missourifishin Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 I'd suggest a St. Croix Avid. But I'm not sure exactly what price point you have in mind when you say you don't want to break the bank. Quote
VolFan Posted June 7, 2014 Posted June 7, 2014 Daiwa Cielos are being closed out. You can get them for slightly more than an Ugly stick some places.as far as bang for your buck, that's about as good as you're going to get. Quote
