timsford Posted June 6, 2014 Posted June 6, 2014 Has anyone tried either of these reels? Im looking for a new spinning reel for smaller jerkbaits and other finesse techniques and the light weight and looks of both of these really intrigues me. My main concern is durability. I have went through several reels in this price range and none seem to last. Im wondering if i should just buy a better model used reel or just save a little more and get a daiwa tournament ss. I know its not the smoothest reel but i used one for every species of fish in my area including stripers for 14 years and it was still going strong when i sold it due to financial hardship. I know neither of these will probably last that long but id like at least a few years of service for my hard earned money Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted June 6, 2014 Super User Posted June 6, 2014 I just ordered an Rtx 25s and it'll be here on Monday. Here's why. I fished 2 okuma trio 30 spinning reels pretty hard over the past 4 years. I believe I paid about $65 for each of them new. Never once did I have any trouble out of either of them. Still super smooth just like day 1. 4yrs of use for $65 is good enough for me. I also have no doubts that they'll be working great a year from now or even more. Okuma has a decent following and they make a nice product. I actually just sold them both on here to purchase the Rtx since now I only use 1 spinning rod. Quote
timsford Posted June 6, 2014 Author Posted June 6, 2014 Let me know what u think of it when u get it out on the water. I cant find many reviews on it but a 6.6 ounce reel with 13 pounds of drag and enough line capacity for the runs stripers and wipers take when hooked sounds awesome. (ive been looking at the 30 size) i cant find any around here to put my hands on and im a little iffy about ordering sight unseen. Quote
Super User kickerfish1 Posted June 6, 2014 Super User Posted June 6, 2014 I can't speak of the Lews spinning reel but I have the Okuma RTX spinning reel. The reel was purchased for various finesse techniques as 2nd string reel to use behind some of my heavy hitters like the stradics. For the money it is a good buy. I think I paid around $80 for mine a little over a year ago. Stylish and lightweight with a strong but not silky smooth drag like the shimanos. The line management system is fair and the casting distance isn't too bad. I haven't caught many or vary large fish to test the drag much so I can't comment there. Also I have no idea how the reel will perform 2-3 years down the road. For a watered down Ci4 looking/feeling type of reel it isn't a bad buy for under $100. Quote
timsford Posted June 7, 2014 Author Posted June 7, 2014 the rtx sounds like a good reel for the money. i think ill probably go with it because i cant find any info on the lews and its a lighter weight reel. Ill mostly be using it for jerkbaits for smallmouth, stripers, and wipers so im a little worried about the frame material but if it breaks at least i wont be out a ton of money. Btw they have this reel for 65 to 75 bucks on the walmart site everyday price. Ive got some pretty good deals there and if anyone is in the market for a new reel they should check there because they have some good deals Quote
Super User rippin-lips Posted June 7, 2014 Super User Posted June 7, 2014 Okuma has great CS and I wouldn't worry one bit any how. Quote
