I'm looking at an Ocean Kayak Trident 11.  I've never heard of Ocean Kayak before until I read about them on another site.  From the videos I see on youtube, they look like a decent company that makes good kayaks.

Do any of you have an opinion on Ocean Kayaks?  Are their kayaks in the same category as Wilderness Systems and Jackson as far as quality goes?

Anybody know anything about Trident 11?  It's not cheap - $1,000 at Austin Kayak.  It looks nice and weighs only 54 pounds.  But for $1,000 there are others out there like the Jackson Cruise series.  Anyway, from the videos I've seen on YouTube the Tridents look nice.

A ocean kayak is just a sit on top that has scupper holes, usually 6 or so. That away any water that comes over into the kayak is drains out the scupper holes. Some people will plug those holes if they aren't going to be near any big waves and no water splashes up. A lot of companies make ocean kayaks.

I don't know about Trident but Jacksons and Hobie are nice good kayaks.

Their is a lot of different types of kayaks, ocean, whitewater, river, lakes and those are broken into more categories like fishing (wider more stable) and cruising (that's what I call then, narrow and go faster)

OK are nice kayaks and they are a reputable company.  My best advice before you buy is if at all possible test them personally.  Even if you have to drive a couple hours to do it, its better to spend a day testing kayaks and finding one you really like instead of losing a few hundred dollars when you sell the one you hate.

That being said, I went with a Jackson Cuda over a Wilderness 115x and I am very happy with my purchase.  One big difference that I noticed between the OK and Jackson/Wildy was the seat.  Jackson has one of the best seats on the market IMO and is adjustable to the high and low position on my boat and Wildy has a comfortable seat and can be mounted in only the high or low position (which you have to choose at the time of purchase and can't be changed) but is still a very comfortable seat.

Good luck!

While that's true on the seats, there are some great aftermarket seats available and OK uses the standard placement of seat hardware so one could throw in a nice comfy seat if they chose to. That said, good kayak seats are not cheap and that cost (If you aren't happy with the one in the boat) needs to be factored into the cost. Agree 100% with GADawgs about the test paddle to see if you like it if at all possible. I have learned the lesson the hard way. I have a cheap SOT now that I prefer hands down to a $1000 boat that's sitting in the garage. The Trident line is a proven, popular series of boats. I don't have any first hand experience with one though. The Mod Pod that OK does is slick

Are there any online stores that sale nice seats for OK kayaks?

Really any standard SOT kayak seat will fit in there. I have a Surf to Summit seat in my kayak, cant say enough good things about the seat. Its very comfortable with good support where it needs to be. I usually sit on a boat cushion though, not because of the seat but because I am a few inches higher then, it does make a difference fishing.

OK, I just looked up Surf to Summit and looked at their site.  Interesting!  So someone could buy a cheap plastic kayak that comes with a cheap seat and then pitch the seat and buy a nice one.
